Title: Let's Get Conventional
Post by: Metal Slime on January 11, 2009, 10:12:05 AM
So normally there are only two conventions I go to every year since they are the only two reasonably close to me. Ohayocon and Colossalcon. Ohayocon is up in the air for me this year and happens at the end of the month, pending whether I get unemployment confirmed before the end of the month after I get laid off next week. But later on in June there's Colossalcon, another anime con that is moving to Sandusky this year since it seems to keep growing larger each year. Normally that's nothing special, but they are moving to a larger convention center/hotel resort that also has a water park! At but a mere $118 a night for a room, you get awesome room, and 4 passes to the waterpark at no charge($20 for each after). I am aware that very few of you live near the area, but there is much potential for a great weekend here.

We should just go to Cedar Point.

That'd be awesome to do to but it's in June after school lets out. I don't want to waste half the convention weekend waiting in line for roller coasters, even though I LOVE roller coasters.

I have been thinking lately that it might be a fun thing for me to do one of these. Is there some sort of master list of noteworthy conventions by location?

If I made enough money to visit any US convention I'd have to pay taxes

They'd make me fill in FORMS  :ohshi~:

Noteworthy and otherwise. (http://dactylmanor.org/fanboy/) I'm mostly a gaming convention person, and for that the only noteworth conventions are Gencon and Dragoncon.  Origins used to be big, but then wizards left because Upper Deck was allowed to run a big tournament at the con, so Upper Deck left because wizards wasn't there anymore.  ::(:

But will I have enough vacation saved up to head up there this year?

My tentative plans are to take three days off.  Despite getting a four day pass, we're only going to enjoy three days of the con.  I'm going to be carpooling with some local gamers and the shop owner.  Leave Wednesday, return Sunday.

We will be using a hotel a fair distance away from the actual con, so I can't really split with anyone.

I don't think any of you are close enough to care about it, but I will be at Recruits Con  (http://recruits.mtswebsites.com/)in Lee Summit, MO.

If for some godforsaken reason one of you end up here I can get you a hotel discount in the central Kansas City area.  No you cannot sleep on my couch unless you are someone awesome like Kazz or better.  (Is that possible?)

GEN CON INDY 2011.  WE MUST MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
It is, as they say, the best four days in gaming.  And you are the best internet people in gaming.
kashan and Envy are down.  ARE YOU?

At the moment I'm planning on staying at a friend's house, but if that falls through or if it sounds like more fun, an over-packed hotel room may be in order.

C'mon you guys. You are nerds and you know it so come hang out with me at Gen Con Indy. We will play games and get milkshakes at 3 am and frolic through the halls strewing flower petals and d4s behind us.

Slightly more importantly, if a lot of you guys want to come FOR SERIOUS I need to know really soon if we want to get a hotel room. If not I'll just stay in my friend's room and that is cool too.

I asked earlier because I had/have an opportunity to go on sunday if I pay ticket cost and for some gas - but I can't justify the trip in general. I've taken a look at the booth lists and games that may be playable there and I can't justify the ~4 hour trip there and ~4 trip back for one day of events. Maybe next year.

Turns out that yeah he wanted $20 for an autograph and that's too rich for my blood.  He was very personable, though; he recognized the Joker on my T-shirt as a Jerry Robinson and said he'd gotten to meet him once.

Got (free) autographs from Stuart Immonen (on Nextwave #1) and Ethan van Sciver (who I had previously argued with on the Internet).

Weird, I wouldn't have expected LaMarr to be high-enough profile to charge. I mean, I suppose he is in everything that needs a black character who sounds exactly the same as all his other characters but still.
Title: Re: Let's Get Conventional
Post by: Thad on May 27, 2012, 07:09:13 PM
He's done some samey parts, but don't sell his range short; I don't think I'd have known Static, GL, JARVIS, and Hermes Conrad were all the same guy as the UPS Guy from Mad TV if somebody hadn't told me.

Anyway, seems like KMR's the guy getting all the Samey Black Guy Cartoon Voices now.  (And he's got range too -- I wouldn't figure Cleveland Jr and Lester the Redneck were the same dude -- but yeah Panthro and Kilowog sound exactly the same.)

Still, twenty bucks?  Nah.  Only dude at the con I'd consider paying $20 for an autograph was Ed Asner.  Wish I'd brought something for him to sign (Superman, Up, whatever), but I figured the line for him would be 'round the block.  It actually wasn't!

Song's Champaign demo is the Saturday of ACen, so the best I'll be able to manage is a late Saturday dinner or something on Sunday.

I guess if you guys were in Champaign you could watch me get the crap beaten out of me while my younger brother laughs at my inability to tumble, but frankly martial arts demos are pretty boring even when they break up into boxing matches at the end.

Title: Re: Let's Get Conventional
Post by: Silversong on April 21, 2013, 02:48:19 AM
I don't know what the schedule will be Saturday night yet so that's hard to say... it's a 24 hour con, and the hotel is within walking distance. We'll have to eat at some point, though.  I can leave whenever I feel like it on Sunday (usually there's a lolita meetup around 11am-ish) but I don't know when JD's flight leaves, I'll have to catch and ask him.
Title: Re: Let's Get Conventional
Post by: Classic on April 21, 2013, 06:25:14 AM
You should do that.
You should also have some idea of the kind of cuisine you want to expose yourself to for this ACen, because at the moment what's coming to mind is Japanese cuisine at varying levels of authenticity with all you can eat sushi places occupying the bottom rungs of that ladder.
But, Chicago is a metropolitan area. Depending on what you want you can get basically any kind of cuisine if you know where to look and are willing to suffer the traffic or mass transit to get there.

Improving.

Might see going by my family practice if it doesn't continue to improve, but they haven't found a cause the last bunch of times I've been in with these symptoms and I don't see why that would change.

Unless you meant "the Doctor" in connection to me being at Comicon in which case yes there were a hell of a lot of Doctors there.  I gotta say the Eleventh Doctor had to be the most popular costume at the thing, followed by the Tenth.  (Followed by simpler costumes in the form of people wearing Finn's hat and Jayne's hat.)  There were maybe a half-a-dozen Fourth Doctors and I saw one each of the First and Fifth.

It will be a hub for communication, networking and, hopefully, an increased understanding of issues facing these communities every day and the promotion of a tolerant, safe space within PAX.

Wait... So this is an actual, physical lounge?
Not like, a series of panels that they're doing as a public service to try and make their constituency be less terrible?

Basically, it's Kentia Hall for marginalized groups.

No.

Go read the materials. It's little more than an information kiosk, where people who run the panels about Mentally Disabled/LGBT/etc can advertise their panels more.

This is not going to be the Faggots Only hall that people seem to think it is, nor are all the Non-Whites going to be forced into this.

It even points out that if you're promoting some diverse-issue game, you'll need a booth in the main hall. Which sort of prevents the whole "They're shoving them all in here" aspect.

This is literally nothing more than them trying to do a corporate outreach thing specifically trying to teach their fanbase about things they may not be aware of.

Is the name awful? Yes.
Would it be better if we didn't need a specific "Hey, stop treating people like assholes" information booth/setup? Yes.
Is this, quote, "1950s-era segregation racism, except for White Cis Males & Everyone else"? No.

If I may be serious for a moment here, speaking as a member of one of those marginalized groups, this sort of half-assed measure comes off as pretty goddamn insulting. Rather than just enact a policy making the entire con a safe space for everyone, they've just set up an INFORMATION section that will likely be completely ignored by the people who could stand to learn the most from it.

Exactly. I mean I guess I can see some sort of argument that states "Well, cons have tried to have policies like that in the past and they've been ignored because we can't police the whole con/whatever other reason/excuse".

But that would be an asinine bullshit reason to give up trying to make a whole con safe.

To go back to Lyrai's point, IF this is only supposed to be an education thing, then that might be less bad if there's only one lounge and it's basically treated like a universal education point. In that case maybe their press release is awful, but the actual intended result is a little better-intentioned.

Unfortunately, it's really not clear from the announcements if there's just one lounge or several. If on the other hand, you have specific lounges for each "issue" (which is the way a lot of us read the initial announcement), then that feels way more like ghettos. That also gets into serious issues of categorization of both people and ailments.

Not to mention that it may just become the butt of some nasty jokes from less considerate attendees: "if you can't handle it, go back to the diversity lounge", etc.

I'm with Ted except that I've always felt safe at PAX already, so....whatever. Just one more thing to completely ignore.

Speaking also as a member of those marginalized groups, there already is a no-harassment policy in place for the entire con, and they've stated repeatedly that they want it to be a safe place for everyone, regardless. There already IS policy in place, but people have told them that there's still a lack of information. So this is their attempt to get the information out.

If somebody fucks with you, I will show you a magic trick (called “Our Harassment Policy”) where that person’s badge disappears.

They underscore it a few more times in newsposts, but the point is there already is a thing in place for this. Again, it is kind of shameful that they have to double down on what is essentially Cosgrove going "Cut it out", but it's good that they're actually trying to put a good foot forward. I imagine this isn't finalized, PAX AUS (where this is supposed to debut, apparently?) is Eleven Months away. Plenty of time for feedback, fine tuning, and making sure it works.

If further releases show Khoo fucking previewing the glass cages and carnie stands, then yes, lets get the pitchforks and get a good old Angry Mob going. But right now we have something with good intentions, a weird name, written for companies and not the public, and nothing else.

So they ended up making a statement on it

Quote from: Robert Khoo
Hi, everyone!

I just wanted to quickly address some of the questions I've been getting about the Diversity Hub and Lounge and the thinking behind it.

A few months ago when the idea was bouncing around, we reached out to a friend of ours, Benjamin Williams (co-founder of Queer Geek and GaymerX) to help with the concept and execution. Together, we've been working to create something that both celebrates and raises awareness of different, underrepresented gamer groups while also encouraging attendees to discover where all the different diversity-driven content at the show can be found. (Although we've always had this content at the show, we wanted to give people an easier means of finding it)

Based on feedback from previous shows, it's clear that having a diverse lineup of both content and exhibitors is something folks want, but the reality is that some of those places might not be able to afford a booth. So we carved out a large room at the show in a high traffic area that highlighted some of these great organizations and offered tables to them for free.

Some of the criticism I've been hearing is that this isolates these groups and tries to shine an uncomfortable spotlight on them. Although I can see how some might see it that way, the goal is to actually drive awareness and even celebrate the groups and their goals. We felt that by unifying the groups, it created a really strong, positive focal point that would attract people to it, similar to how the Indie Megabooth does on the show floor. That said, if it doesn't work out the way we'd like it to or if it doesn't have the right vibe, we're flexible enough to do things differently for future shows.

The fact is that this discussion is already ensuring that the area won't be ignored, which I think is great. I really do hope people understand that we are constantly trying to make the show better.

I also want to make clear that we have always strived to make the ENTIRETY of PAX a safe place via our policies, our content, and our dedication to our attendees. The Diversity Hub and Lounge isn't meant to say the rest of the show isn't diverse or safe - it's meant to highlight, educate and celebrate. Thanks all!

EDIT: Further comments underscore that no one will be forced into the area, and that Khoo is literally telling everyone to email him if they have anything to say.

People shouldn't need an individual area set aside for them to feel safe.

They don't, the whole con is (still) safe for everyone, this is a special effort to get fedoras to be less fedorable, grognards to be less grognarded.

Oh.

Okay then.

Yeah opening up that statement with "B-but it was the Gays' idea!" wasn't the most graceful kickoff, but I think it gets the point across that these guys are trying their best and it's not their fault that they have no idea what they're doing. Should probably just hire someone who does (based on a proven track record and not just opinions) but it might be too late for  / not actually worth that.

We can all be glad that it turned out to be an overblown non-issue. But I have to admit, I did love this comment from the peanut gallery:

In an effort to extend this initiative to patrons on their way to Pax, local shuttles and buses will be outfitted with a smaller version of the diversity lounge in the back section of each vehicle.

Well, they did just go through that whole thing about paring down their operation...

Hey, maybe they could tack that job on to the sysadmin they want to hire!
