Title: Spam
Post by: Thad on March 11, 2008, 12:43:38 PM
Just removed a Viagra spam thread; that's our second one.  Arc, don't we have Captcha or any such similar thing to keep the spammers out?

(A ban flag for usernames containing "Viagra" probably wouldn't hurt either.)

The first time I joined a forum I joined as "ViagrantStoryFan"

That was a mistake, let me tell you.

I am a foreigneras, hence I have the absolute authority. Maybe I should collect; $1.72E+13 is a lot of money. I could almost pay off a fraction of the national debt with that much.

Isn't the listed national debt still under 12E+9?

I could be wrong, but in European countries isn't billion (elsewhere) = trillion (USA) as far as counting?

Not to delve to deeply into Real World subject matter, but the National Debt is in the range of $50-100 trillion when the currently-unfunded liabilities associated with Social Security and Medicare are taken into the equation.

Subject: Bigger your ShortPenis - 100% Natural EnlargementPills is Safe & Effective! xowx cxs
From: Cristal Tamisha

Max GentleMan are probably the best choice you can make if you are going to buy PenisEnlargement pills. They have appeared in Maxim & FHM and have become highly respected pills being rated the No. 1 pill by various sites.

Max GentleMan are the most successful pill on the market today and that happens because they have developed a team of researchers that are constantly upgrading and improving the formula and testing it.In fact the Max GentleMan team spend over 2 years just in research before the product came out.

Growth: Max GentleMan claims gains of 1-3 inches. From our experience we would say that the average male that uses 5 to 8 bottles in a 6 to 8 month period may gain around of 1.5 inches. Although 2 and 3 inches growth can occur this is not the case for most people. These results are boost dramatically by combining the pills with exercises.

Speed: This system is quite fast to act. What happens when you take EnlargementPills is that you start to feel a sense of confidence and sexualEnergy short after taking them.

Usually within the first two weeks you should notice an increaase in sexdrive and by the end of the month yourErections should be stronger as more blood is circulating in thePenis. Most people will see real gains in the flaccid length before they see it in the ErectLength.

This is normal and part of the process. By the second month yourPenis length when erectShould be bigger. While not everyone will get the same results and some hard gainers will probably have to wait 6 months to get the desired gains.

Benefits:

    * PermanentPenis Enlargement: - 1-3 inches in 1ength & girth.
    * End to PrematureEjaculation
    * Increased semen production: Some men report an increase in theirEjaculation power.
    * IntensifiedOrgasms: Enhancement of your pleasure.
    * Improved confidence: Less Embarrassment, enjoy betterSex.
    * SexualStamina: You will last Longer and recover fromOrgasm faster. You will become more arousedAnd ready toSex.

Money back: They offer a guarantee valid for 6 months after purchase. If you require a refund, all you have to do is return the empty containers with a hand written letter which states exactly why you didn't like our product. Less than 1% of men have requested a refund which most mean something.

Delivery: Orders are sent the same business day. USA orders will be shipped Priority Express Air by the United States. This usually takes 4-5 business days. All International orders will take between 5-8 business days.

yo mate, ok I`ll give you my trick but if you give it someone else I`ll fuckin kill you  :)
you know in roulette you can bet on blacks or reds. If you bet $1 on black and it goes black you win $1 but if it goes red you loose your $1.
So I found a way you can win everytime:

bet $1 on black if it goes black you win $1

now again bet $1 on black, if it goes red bet $3 on black, if it goes red again bet $8 on black, if red again bet $20 on black, red again bet $52 on black (always multiple you previous lost bet around 2.5), if now is black you win $52 so you have $104 and you bet:

$1 + $3 + $8 + $20 + $52 = $84 So you just won $20  :)

now when you won you start with $1 on blacks again etc etc. its always bound to go black
eventually (it`s 50/50) so that way you eventually always win. But there`s a catch. If you
start winning too much (like $1000 a day) casino will finally notice something and can ban
you. I was banned once on royal casino. So don`t be too greedy and don`t win more then $200
a day and you can do it for years. I think bigger casinos know that trick so I play for real
money on smaller ones, right now I play on elite vip casino: [REDACTED!] for more
then 3 months, I win $50-$200 a day and my account still works. You`ll find roulette there when you log in go to "specialty" section - "american roulette". And don`t you dare talling about it anyone else, if too many people knows about it casinos will finally found a way to block that trick. If you have any questions just drop me a line here or on skype.

c ya

The trick with mail-order brides, ya see, is you can't just have one. As soon as you get one pregnant you end up with like four or five of them. Well, I guess it was a bargain in the long run...

I got spam in the mail today. I'm calling it spam and not junk mail because it was for my website. The whole thing was a bill for $65 saying I owe them that much for putting my website through search engine and hosting fees. And to send in a check right now and if I send them my bank info, I can just have them take money from my account.

Only on the back, at the very bottom, in fine print does it say "Not a bill but a solicitation for your consideration."

Got an email in my old Hotmail account that purported to be from Microsoft. The title was "My Friend's Been Hacked!" and the email was loaded with javajunk that had been blocked by NoScript. I had a chuckle at what I thought was just the latest attempt at nonsense.

The Ballad of @Horse_ebooks (http://splitsider.com/2012/01/the-ballad-of-horse_ebooks/)

Quote
It is a spam account. It tweets snippets of semi-promotional text throughout the day and night. Unlike most spam accounts, which trawl for Tweets relevant to their pitch and automatically respond to buzzwords, horse_ebooks doesn’t respond to anyone. Horse_ebooks doesn’t mass-follow, another common spamming technique. (Since new follower notification emails — which contain profile information, including links — users receive aren’t stopped by spam filters, but most of the people followed by horse_ebooks are people who chose to follow it first.) The reason it hasn’t been shut down yet is the same reason it’s so hilariously terrible at its job: It doesn’t bother anyone who doesn’t want to be bothered.

-Uh, yeah, sorry but I'm pretty on the ball with my identity stuff to begin with, and besides that's probably a pay service and I can't afford it.
-You'll be happy to know that we offer a one month free trial-
-And if no one tries to steal my identity during that month, how will I know if your service is any good?
-The service also comes with purchase protection-
-Before I waste more of your time by letting you explain what that is, how much does that even cost?
-Only 8.95$ per month.
-So that's about a hundred dollars per year.
-Yes sir.
-If I subscribe to this service I won't be able to go to the dentist anymore.
-...
-You know what? If someone wants my identity, they can have it.
-Thanks for being a Royal Bank customer, sir.
-Have a nice day!

Actually clicked on this, because I guess I really AM that out-of-it.  NoScript caught it and all it pulled up was a blank page with a spinny throbber; I imagine even if NoScript hadn't caught it I'd have noticed pretty shortly that it wasn't the real LinkedIn page and wouldn't have gotten as far as entering my password.  But yeah, it was professional-looking enough that I missed the clues and clicked through; keep an eye out for this one.

I've been surprised just how much spam I get at work.  Like, professional "Come to our conference!" spam.

I'm surprised by how legitimately terrible Outlook's built-in spam filter is, and also by the lengths that "respectable" companies go to to evade it (E-Mail addresses from dozens of different variations on the same domain).

But if you want some real amateur-hour shenanigans, I just got an apparently-legit E-Mail with the subject line "Join us at Oracel Open World" and whose first sentence is "I trust you are Keeping well with the pace of your busy schedule."  With a request for a receipt.

There's probably a joke in there somewhere about Oracle's commitment to openness being so strong that it doesn't want its name spelled correctly when the subject comes up.

I keep meaning to drop him an E-Mail and be like "Dude, Sam, what were you thinking?"

One of the cleverer bits of search spam I've seen recently: Use Chameleon Bootloader to Run Mac OS X 10.7: Install Mac OS X Lion (http://www.downloadatoz.com/howto/use-chameleon-bootloader-to-run-mac-os-x-10-7-install-mac-os-x-lion,11907.html)

I read through the instructions a second time to confirm that they did not mention Chameleon at all and there was no link to a previous page.  Then I caught the gibberish text at the top and realized it was skimmed.

Pretty solid fucking skim job, though; it's a perfectly good set of instructions on how to install OSX.  It just doesn't have a damn thing to do with Chameleon.

Or Lion, come to think of it.  Seeing as how Lion is an App Store download and you generally do not actually want to format the drive you're installing it to.

The point is, I need to go to bed because the last time I was sitting at a computer this tired and confused I wound up wiping the wrong hard drive.

Because I am rereading the thread instead of going to bed like I should:

I pick up the phone, say "oui allô?". Long silence. Heavily accented female voice, sounds vaguely african, almost timid. "Good day sir. I call to inform you that there's a problem with your computer."

That's not even translated for your benefit. It's someone straight up calling me in English (which basically never happens). To tell me there's something wrong with my computer.

I went "I'm pretty sure there's not, goodbye", and hung up, but now I'm curious. Hmm. Wish I wasn't fundamentally too nice to mess with even probable scammers.

Ars recently had a couple good articles on this scam.  The first was an overview of a recent FTC crackdown (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/10/hello-im-definitely-not-calling-from-india-can-i-take-control-of-your-pc/); coincidentally it was followed just hours later by another Ars writer actually getting one of the calls (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/10/i-am-calling-you-from-windows-a-tech-support-scammer-dials-ars-technica/).
Title: Re: Spam
Post by: François on November 15, 2012, 02:15:50 AM
Wow, yeah, thanks for the links, that's definitely what was going on. Honestly my best guess at the time was that the woman who called me might have been some unfortunate Haitian immigrant set up in Montréal being forced to do that sort of thing by an abusive boyfriend or something, but I'm not gonna put a lot of stock in my ability to identify foreign English accents; the call coming from India does make more sense.

Given the following exchange from the comments in the first article...
Quote
"Look, do you actually get anyone with this scam?"
"Yes, except you are stupid and a fool."
"Alright man, I wish you better luck with your future scams. Have a great afternoon."
"Shut up you fool."
...I think I would find myself much less inclined to be too nice if it was to happen to me again. Man, you just failed to rob someone, might as well be polite about it at least.
Title: Re: Spam
Post by: Thad on November 15, 2012, 10:06:44 AM
I'm sure there are scams like that running throughout the developing world.

Found another good one in the series: “Can you fix my Windows 95 computer?”: How to troll a tech support scammer (http://arstechnica.com/features/2012/10/can-you-fix-my-windows-95-computer-how-to-troll-a-tech-support-scammer/)

Quote
Scammer: In our London office we have got a server and, in that server we keep track of all the IP addresses, and if those IP addresses, if any of the IP addresses blinks in red that gives us an indication that there might be online malware infections that are in the system.

Russell: Let me get this straight. You've got servers in your head office which are connected to every computer in the country, and any time somebody has a piece of malware, you get a little flashing light.

Quote
On the lighter side, one reddit poster (http://www.reddit.com/r/talesfromtechsupport/comments/w79zp/i_got_one_of_those_scam_calls_today/) named aveilleux really wanted a tech support scammer to call him. Waiting for such an occasion, he had prepared an unpatched Windows 2000 virtual machine and a flash drive filled with viruses. After toying with the scammer by pretending not to know what a keyboard was, he let the "technician" take remote control over the system. He put the viruses in an archive titled "bank_data.zip" and put some you-will-want-to-scoop-your-eyes-out pictures from a notorious subreddit into a file called "passwords.zip." He recounts what happens next:

Quote
Naturally, the guy at the other end of the line grabs passwords.zip and bank_data.zip and uploads them to a fileshare server. (Why he didn't just use the LogMeIn VPN is beyond me.) I make a note of the deletion links. This takes maybe 45 minutes (I have a fast connection). After that's done, he snags some files from \WINNT\ (to grab registration info and such; of course, the system's data is all incorrect). I get a call from Jason [the scammer].

"Okay, Mister aveilleux. We have all the information we need and we'll be back in touch with you if we need anything."

"Thanks much, Jason. I hope you enjoy my data as much as I did."

    "I'm sorry?"

    "Never mind. Goodbye!"

3/4 Cup unsalted butter at room temp
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
pinch of cloves
Salt and pepper to taste

Make slits in yams.  Bake at 400° for 1 1/4 hours.  Let cool 20 minutes.  Scoop out pulp.  Mix and mash with all ingredients.  Bake at 350° for 1 hour.

My guess would be that their strategy is to mass send innocuous-looking emails, then add everyone who replies to a list of recipients for slightly more targeted spam. It might circumvent spam filters which use a heuristic like "Email coming from an address that the user has contacted should probably not be blocked."

Bongo's got it.  Establishing a "prior business relationship" is a cornerstone to not only bypassing filters, but also to establishing a legal sliphole if the victim starts complaining.  Any authority who's paying attention should be able to notice that telling someone in the first place doesn't construe a business relationship, but the spammers sort of thrive on people who aren't paying attention.

Subject: New concept (HINT: not using your computer)

Hi,

Recently I learned that APPLE has
more caash in their account than the
entire US Government

The biggest thing that led to Apple
literally taking over the world was...

Ready for it?

iPhone

100% - Apple leads the mobile space
and they took over VERY FAST. It's
said over and over this was because
Steve Jobs had a viision.

A vision to put Apple ahead of THE
biggest treed over world has ever seen.

Everything is moving towards MOBILE...

What did that lead to?

It lead a Company (Apple) having MORE
spending money in the bank than the
US Government.

Okay, I can hear you saying...

''But...why do I care?''

Because of this:

If you're not yet looking into Mobile
Marketing, you're missing out BIG time!

Imagine if you had figured the Internet
out BEFORE it became big.

Yes, you'd likely be a MULTI-Millionaire
by now... or MORE.

Well, be warned, you have the chaance
RIGHT NOW.

There are BILLIONS of dollars ''already''
being made in Mobile, it's only going to
grow faster and faster, and it's time for you
to get a small piece of that.

Is it hard? Not at all..just check this out:

Don't believe me?

Fine, check this out.

HP (The LARGEST PC maker in the world)
just announced recently they are QUITTING
PC's.

NO MORE PC's for them!!

The worlds #1 PC maker said they're done
and they are going..100% MOBILE now.

If that doesn't convince you, I honestly have
NO IDEA what will..

Just take a minute and see how you can
grab a piece of the pie..
