Title: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: Kazz on April 15, 2009, 08:09:34 PM
Hey, Sharkey wrote this.

Demigod doesn't work. (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173758)

I did not know anybody still used the term "warez."

I always pronounced it "wahr-ezz."

...

This has been, Talkin' About Sharkey.  Thank you and goodnight.

MORE LIKE TALKIN' ABOUT DEMIGOD:

that's a shame.  I was interested in seeing how DOTA You Pay Money For ended up being.

Wow, 1up's banner ads suck.

The article about the broken game is good, funny.

Interestingly, at least part of the problem seems to be the fact that people have been stealing the hell out of the game over the weekend.

This sounds like a job for OnLive!

Quick, to the OnMobile!

This really fails compared to what use to be on his site. Also I don't see the humor.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey

it wasn't actually funny.  Nor do I think it was really intended to be.  just a news post.

i don't really know what else he's up to, cause I hate 95% of that site.

really I just started this thread because, hey, we don't ever talk about Sharkey.

he wrote this (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8985721&publicUserId=5048614) blog update recently.  Who's heard of this?

I read Freeloader. I tried Hero's Arms. But I didn't retain interest long enough to see whether it was any good. I think I am turning into a goldfish.

I played Hero's Arms for an hour or so at work the other day. Not bad, but lacks polish and needs less repetitive music. Interesting mix of Zelda + Zelda 2 systems, but not interesting enough. Will likely not play again.

Yeah, I just tried it, and pretty much wandered around aimlessly until enough fuckers hit me with rocks to kill me.  Maybe you have to play a while to get to the good content but it's pretty sad when you can't top a game made for vore fetishests.

VARPG2 is actually sort of good though.

I just got the axe, and
for some reason it travels further if you throw it diagonally. The key to beating those pale fuckers in the first dungeon (?) with about 200 hp that walk slowly toward you is to throw the axe and run from it, letting it whack them each five or so times as it sails back to you.

First boss, thought he was a joke then he tentacle raped me; Stand close and just whack, but the second he stops taking damage go down a bit and right or left a bit to avoid the tentacle or icebeam. Didn't have to use the dungeon item on him. That was refreshing enough to propel me to find the second dungeon.

I'm now convinced that half this game's length is due to the slow walking speed of the main. I spam magic whenever I get it just to move a bit faster for a while.
Edit: I found the spoilers tag. It was <spoiler>! How obvious!

Alternately, pull out your sword and hit them with it until they die.

I know there are many on these forums who don't believe in Sharkey, and I once was one of them. It's not like there's a lot of evidence he ever existed, except for some texts that for all we know might not even have been written by him. But there are signs, you know, there are signs for those who have faith. Not signs you can explain, mind you. It's a feeling in your gut, in your soul, that he's out there somewhere, and that he'll be back one day.

I considered him a myth until early last summer when I played Virtua Fighter 4 with him and EmaWii in the 1up.com office.

Ray Barnholdt looked at me and the guy I was with like, "Who the fuck are these guys, and why is Sharkey bringing them in here?"

There is an idea of a Scott Sharkey; some kind of digital abstraction. But there is no real Sharkey: only an entity, something electronically illusory. And though he can flaunt his cold gaze, and you can digg his blog and see carny born flesh and maybe you even sense that your lifestyles are probably comparable... He is simply Parish, on a binge, with a wig.

I think there might have been a minute more of content there, but I don't know if it would be worth the extra thirty minutes of editing and two hours of drawing+drafting to make it work properly.

It is also hard to tell which stick figure is meant to be you. Maybe you need an icon more than just glasses. Perhaps a funny hat? That might help. That said, try not to choke on your own bile when you're inevitably compared to that filthy racist.

Man, that'd be nice. Given the time investment twice a week might actually be possible. I'm going to aim for weekly at first, though.

Mostly I'm just spending today kind of blown the fuck away that the internet didn't completely gut me for trying. Funny how used to that you can get.

Ok now what you need to do next is play a few games and miss the point entirely. You know, like reviewing Soul Calibur 4 on the strength of it's single player campaign!

A nice and entertaining rant. However there's something that makes it stand out from its predecessors. Not sure what it is yet. My first guess is that the ending seemed somehow forced or failed to tie in with the rest of the rant. As a climax/denouement it feels forced or rushed.

Yeah, and I just got around to Left 4 Dead 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3176957). Go me, I suppose. Way to get to review a game that might actually deserve to be a big sort of deal. I can't help liking it when that happens, even if I feel like a pussy for it. I guess it's a more rewarding challenge to try to champion the little buggers that deserve more than they'll get, or to tear down the cynical cash grabs for the crap they are. But every once in a while you get something fairly high profile that deserves to be where it is, and you can just say, well, that's alright. I can just let this one roll to where it's going.

And yeah, still doing this shit (http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9009697). Which I fucking love, by the way. Can't help feeling that it should be better every damn time I try, but so far I'm enjoying the attempts. I ain't looking for any cocksucking from this direction, but I kind of take it as a higher compliment when I can still manage to entertain you assholes. Except for Kazz, who can get fucked until he bleeds out.

Just kidding. I love you, Kazz. Especially if you kill yourself. That'd be awesome.

Pretty spot-on, I'd say. Beyond the simple visceral kicks you get straight chucking a tractor trailer at Some Dude, the simulated world is a fair one. I think "power fantasy" holds truer than you'd think - here you are in complete control of the world, you can accomplish great things through sheer effort alone.

All you must do is grit your teeth and look really cool over and over until all your problems have been decapitated in a fucking sweet 360-degree bullet-time pan.

More than two takes (how I wish I could have done it in two.) The timing was way too complicated for that. Mostly actually scripting the thing, remembering two sets of lines for myself, figuring how long each would take and timing them (reading the as yet unrecorded line in my head and trying to guess how long I'd take,) and trying to find the best places to break it up with a video or something so they could be resynched. Also, trying to get all that done between 10AM and noon, using stories that broke this morning or last night.

Huge pain in the ass, especially for the video guy, who I'm sure is really, really sick of hearing my voice after having to dick with this for a good chunk of the afternoon.

Fun, but I am so not a fucking actor and never wanted to be.

This was the best part.

I guess you did have some pretty long cuts there. The trick to making time shenanigans easier is to plan your cuts in advance and keep them short?

Oh well, not like you're going to do this again in the near future. Nice work.

I like the outrage from the original goldeneye developer that Activision was only in it for the money. As if the original liscensed game movie tie in wasn't a cashgrab that just happened to turn out good.

Those were clearly RCP-90s (I never got why they put R and C in front of the P. As far as I know that gun in real life is just called the P-90 and being a submachine gun designed as a last resort defence weapon for tank and helicopter crews, it's far from the uber weapon it was modeled as in Goldeneye) and everyone dual wielded Klobs anyway; That was the only way to kill anyone with the damn things.

The thing about Goldeneye is YES, it was originally a license game that then pretty much randomly ended up being such a favourite on the console. BUT WHY THE HELL MAKE AN OTHER GAME WITH THAT NAME. Like really? You're going to make a sequel to a game that was just licensed shlock in the first place just so that people might buy your game due to name recognition? Like, it's not a bad idea at all, marketing wise, but holy fuck is that tacky. I would never want my name attached to that pile of name grabbing shit. Jesus christ.

Also, Goldeneye for the N64 sucked shit. I know a lot of people love it for being "the first good console shooter with multiplayer" but those people are fags. I dunno about them, but I had a computer and on it I could play any quake and have a much better experience than playing a game with a hokey James Bond theme where you had to press C-buttons to look up or down and strafing was a pain in the ass. Baron Samedi's hat was included in his hit box for fuck's sake.

Unless something has recently changed, Goldeneye on the Wii is a remake, not a sequel, with modern FPS features, like netplay and regenerating health, and of course, much better graphics. To a point, I'm with you on Goldeneye being overrated, but it's still one of the most beloved Nintendo titles of all time and a remake seems obvious. All remakes are cashgrabs, because you have a built in fanbase of people guaranteed to buy your product who, unless you fuck up catastrophically, will always be satisfied with the quality of your product. It's really, really hard to fuck up a remake. Cashgrab or not, a lot of people are going to enjoy and appreciate this game - I know we'll be buying a copy.

Besides, let's stop kidding ourselves, all games are cash grabs. Last I checked, the entire point of getting a publisher is to make money off your game. It's not like Rare was a boutique studio of independent artist developers like the Braid guy and Zara.

Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey

Making money doing something you love and doing something because you love to make money are two entirely different things and I think Rare is arguing they're in the first category while remaking a game is in the second.

Didn't 1UP initially distinguish itself from other game sites by establishing a more direct connection between its audience and its editors? The higher-ups there have absolutely no idea what they're doing.

Ugh this really sucks. With Sharkey gone and Jeremy no longer wanting to do podcasts it would seem 1up is losing a fan in me. Quickly. I only stayed over after the purge because of Parish/Sharkey/Barnholt. At least Barnholt is still around.. he can be kinda entertaining.

They should just scrap Oddcast with no Starkey. Without him there to keep Tina in line Oddcast will quickly devolve. I made a few comments on 1up bitching. Probably a dumb, semi-whiney thing to do but fuck it. This sucks and I want them to know it. Also complained to @1UP (http://twitter.com/#!/1up (http://twitter.com/#)) on twitter saying that it's bullshit of them to not even acknowledge that Sharkey is gone.

/edit
Also I don't know if this is possible/how well Sharkey knows them or what.. but it'd probably be a good idea to make the rounds on a couple of podcasts. (Rebel fm, geekbox, bitmob) Not to trash 1up or anything (although that'd be amazing, haha) but to just keep your voice out there. Seems like it helped most of the refugees from the 1up apocalypse get new jobs.

I've always found 1up pretty unengaging other than a couple of their podcasts which were mildly interesting.

I sort of like the idea of a site that doesn't cover what's making the most noise and instead just researches big stories on the history of older stuff, or what has led to recent gaming trends and that sort of thing along side articles about interviews with developers and indies that are actually doing interesting things now. A gaming news site that is more about looking around for stuff that they find interesting rather than chasing whatever the "stories" and releases happen to be right this second.

You can find examples of all that sort of stuff in the gaming press now, but it always seems to play second fiddle to "Nintendo announced the 3DS will be the same price as everything else they have ever made." and "An other Halo was released today, here's our review."

It would be sort of like the Playboy (uh, the early years) of professional gaming news sites except without...... even with the pinup girls!

No idea. I'm guessing Joe let it lapse and someone else grabbed it and crammed a bunch of ads into the wayback archive of the thing. Ah, well. I was never actually keen on that name, anyway.

I just regged Bitfuckers.com, but don't think I'll be using that one, either. I'm totally open to suggestions.

Has there ever been a sort of Siskel and Ebert pairing of them?  One obsessively pounding on every niggling complaint about the thing and one riding a fucking euphoric rainbow of buzzwords and nine-point-somethings, arguing against each other?

I admit I read like zero gaming reviews because, you know.

Fucking fuck. More layoffs at 1up/UGO. Ray Barnholt & Chris Plante are now gone. I wonder if these and Sharkey's layoffs are related at all. Oh well, doesn't matter. Sharkey and Ray should start up a new retro podcast, that'd be amazing. (or any podcast really, saddening lack of Sharkey in my life. :<)

As for the domain.. Scott-Sharkey.com is available but dashes are kinda trashy. Fuckingsharkey.com is also up for grabs. (Going off your comic titles, of course.) Not sure that domain gives off the right idea though, haha. Also the ReverendSharkey thing.. wasn't that already done by another videogames journalist? ("Reverend" Anthony Burch.) Fuck it though, he doesn't even write anymore. (Well, he writes for Gearbox now.)

I made one of those XP grinders (though nowhere near as nice looking) and left it running for 6 hours while I slept. When I came back to minecraft it was running literally 1 frame every 3-4 seconds. It stayed that way until I finally killed enough skellies to improve performance.

Went from level 19 to 33, though, so it was worth it. Probably won't do that again, though.

The XP grinder doesn't seem to work in multiplayer, though.  Punching knees doesn't work.

Splash potions of harm can be used instead.

According to minecraftwiki, splash potions fired from a dispenser don't cause mobs to drop XP. That sucks, because if they did you could just hook a dispenser full of splash potions up to a redstone clock of some length (an hour, say) and let the game run. Of course, I can see why Notch wouldn't want to allow that.

What I really wish is that the XP system was much less grindy, to the point where you could get good enchantments without, you know, building mob grinders specifically to farm XP.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: TA on October 30, 2011, 12:55:29 PM
That would require crafting a billion splash potions of harm instead of just holding down the punch button.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: PhoenixUltima on October 30, 2011, 12:58:30 PM
Don't splash potions have a "blast" radius? I think one potion would kill every skeleton spawned.

Er, I haven't actually used splash potions myself, so I might be wrong.

they do. it's like four blocks even, so it's pretty easy to kill your friends.

And it can go through walls. And they don't kill. Poison and whatever bring you down to half a heart at the very least, right?
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: Norondor on October 30, 2011, 03:42:40 PM
... yes, but potions of harm just do direct damage, and level 3+ does over 10 hearts.

Most people prone to that quit several revisions ago.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: Mongrel on October 30, 2011, 04:43:08 PM
I dunno, most prior revisions were something you could live with, so long as you weren't a "Those People On The Internets Who Complain" kind of person. I just fail to see how anyone can really enjoy a quintessential "utterly boring with no redeeming characteristics" XP/Level grinding system. To say nothing of "The End" and it's (ahah) 'Boss'.

I mean, I'm not attached to the game and just play creative once in a while, so this is not me rating or anything. It just strikes me as both hilarious and tragic that arguably the most creative, unique, and interesting game in several years is so hellbent on becoming something so tepid, derivative, and boring.

But hey, I'm not a Swede rolling in money.

What really disappointed me is how Notch completely dropped the ideas he had for multiplayer. Zombie siege, capture the flag, none of that is seeing the light of day.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: Norondor on October 30, 2011, 05:50:13 PM
you can't actually level, i don't know why they're calling it XP. it's more like mana or something? you just spend it to get tools with special properties.

also i daresay CTF/horde mode in a game with pretty much only melee weapons and the ability to build and destroy anything is a bankrupt practice to start with -- see Cortex Command.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: Mongrel on October 30, 2011, 05:54:43 PM
Uh, in the 1.9x iterations, your level affects the potency of the enchantments and magical stuff you can make, as well as unlocking some magical creations entirely.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey

uhhhh does it. i thought you just spent levels on that jam.
Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: TA on October 30, 2011, 07:14:12 PM
Yeah, experience levels are just spent directly on enchantments and nothing else.  They don't improve or unlock anything, except in so far as you can't spend 27 levels on an enchantment unless you have 27 levels to spend.

Title: Re: Talkin' About Sharkey
Post by: PhoenixUltima on October 30, 2011, 08:39:53 PM
Yeah, the XP in this game is more akin to what I would call skill points or ability points - you accrue them until you have enough to spend on what you want, then spend them. Only in this case the enchantment is randomized based on how many skill/magic/whatever points you spend on them.

Anyway, I don't really get why people whine about this so much. If you don't like grinding for XP or enchantments or brewing potions, you don't have to do any of that. You can just build shit until the end of time. And if you do decide you want to do those things, you can build specific contraptions to aid the process. Either way it doesn't interfere with the rest of the game.

Really, the only problem I have with the XP system as implemented is that it needs some serious tweaking - you can grind mobs for hours and still only have enough magic points to buy 1 or 2 middling enchantments. Even level 40 tends to not get you much (though I am running around with a diamond pickaxe with efficiency IV and unbreaking III, which is pretty cool). It's ridiculous. It's almost like the game isn't finished!

Expand on this!

Specifically, on how Cortex Command as a functioning game and now a graphical demo actually panned out. It has always fascinated me yet I've never really felt compelled to get the game.

I'd say the XP in minecraft is more akin to gold. Except the magic weapons you buy are randomized depending on how much gold you spend.

it's not a finished game and probably never will be but you can play 2-player vs where one player's goal is to kill the brain. it turns out: in a game where you can just tunnel through the ground/concrete/steel with a digging tool, this isn't very much fun.

I encourage you all to investigate Vechs' "Race for the Wool" maps.  Imagine two long islands floating in the middle of nothingness, each a mirror of each other.  There's a channel between them about a chunk wide, and Vechs has built redstone contraptions between the lanes designed to fuck with the other side.  You're not allowed to enter the void between the two lanes, but you can shoot arrows and built TNT cannons.  The idea is to complete the puzzles within your lane to retrieve the wool blocks while simultaneously taking effort to hamper the other side's efforts to do the same.  If you subscribe to Coestar's youtube channel, you already know what I'm talking about, but if you're not, check it out.  It's pretty wacky.

What am I getting to in all this?  I really don't think that we as the Internet have scratched the surface of what Minecraft is capable of.

Just tried out the idea of using harm potions to clear out skeletons. Alas, harm actually heals them now. Of course, this being a videogame, thrown healing potions fuck them up as expected, and without the danger of hurting oneself with splashback. I'm actually kind of embarrassed I didn't think of it myself. It's way the hell faster.

Sharkey weighs in on Skyrim (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/elder-scrolls-v/1212121p1.html) in his typical fashion.

The thing i most remember about Undying was using the rock to shove bonemonsters into corners over and over because i didn't want to spend pistol ammo on them. Also, a constant chorus of "Stuck. Jammed. Jammed." as i ran around Doom-humping all the walls and doors.

Semi-relatedly, is the phrase "I've invested over 60 hours of my life into this game and it feels like I've only started to scratch the surface for what it offers" something they told people to work into reviews? It's appeared verbatim in every one i've read.

Can you just hit the reject button on the paypal the email you get (you should get an email about the payment, nagging you to sign up for paypal to accept the payment). Scratch that, Paypal let me cancel it on my end. Sharkey, you don't need to do anything.

I still want to send something, but I can't send a cheque because it'll get there too late from up here. If anyone else here is sending a cheque, could you PM me? I'll paypal you what I was going to paypal sharkey and you can just send a slightly larger cheque than you were intending to send. If that's okay.

EDIT: Never mind the paypal stuff.

Hey Sharkey, what's your issue with setting up a PayPal?  Just want to make sure there's no restriction on incoming gifts or something that you're trying to avoid before I just tell people "Yeah PayPal it to me and I'll make sure it gets to Sharkey."

I'll let him speak for himself when he's got a minute, but per his Twitter (https://twitter.com/EvilSharkey) it looks like he's just concerned about it taking too long for Paypal to get the money into his bank account.

Yeah, Paypal holds the shit outta your money if you're a new user (or even if you're an established user, if the sum is big enough).

Wouldn't personal checks take just as long or longer? I know most banks I've dealt with put a hold on those, unless you've already got a pretty hefty available balance.

That's not been my experience -- seems like it used to be that when I deposited a large check the bank would grant me immediate access to the first $100 but would have the whole sum cleared by the next business day, but more recently they haven't put any hold on my deposits at all.  (Though that could be due to my being added to one of the family business accounts -- that could mean my personal account gets the same perks as a longstanding business account does.  Don't know for sure.)

I haven't had any trouble getting money from Paypal right after it's sent, either, but I've also had an account there for about a decade with direct deposit/withdrawal permissions on my checking account.

Could do a money order I guess, although you're really not supposed to mail those for obvious reasons.  Or there's everyone's favorite skeezbucket, Western Union.

But if that's the case, then yeah - do it through me if you don't want to send paper.  The email is brent_r@ymail.com.  I'll try and find the fastest way to make it usable for him.

And, let's just do this too: I will match whatever you guys send.  So if you all want to band together and make this the season that I end up regretting my capricious charity schemes, go for it.

From the man's Twitter it sounds like we don't need to do any of this, so if he makes good on his threat to start tearing up checks I'll just not accept any of sends (they pop right back into your account after a couple weeks if the receiver doesn't acknowledge them).  But, you know, best not to just sit here and hope the pot doesn't come up a few bennies short.

And you guys do Paypal to Brent, be sure to choose "personal" so as to minimize fees. If you're feeling extra nice, you can send it as a gift and pay the (extremely minimal - I think it's 1%) fee yourself. That'll make sure that that money really goes to Sharkey, rather than PayPal.

If they take it out of the money you're sending I'll just eat the roundoff.

I'm pretty sure a check can get from Idaho to Nevada within a day or so, right? I can't mail this until Monday.

Wish I had checked this thread earlier today, I had to go to the post office and I could've mailed it then. :(

all "it's a wonderful life" jokes aside, that is literally sharkey's twitter feed right now.

I am in for what I can spare. I think we all owe the Shark-Man for this community, which is ostensibly not about Sharkey anymore, but certainly was at one time. Thanks, boss.

I'll be sending this out at lunchtime today (noon PST), so last call.

Also, if you already did something else, let me know and I'll add it to my match.  Thanks.

Check in the mail! Pick up is at one and it's 11 now, so it should get to Sharkey tomorrow or Wednesday. I hope that's enough time.

Just got everything. That covered the last of it almost to the dime. I already sent him a check, with this and next month's rent and grocery budget covering the difference. I knew you guys would come through. I'm going to have to write a proper response this weekend. Seems like a good way to break in a new website. Just... holy shit. You guys can't have any idea what you just did.

I like that as a group we've gotten to the point were we can do things like this for one and other. It makes me feel all grown up inside.

Wait, did you have to use your own rent and grocery budget? D:

Do you need help now?

I think the idea is that our contribution covered the rent/food portion that he'd already sent out.

I'm glad we were able to help you save christmas, Sharkey.

I was confused for a bit until I realized that meant "this month's and next month's rent" rather than "this check and next month's rent".  At least I hope that's what he meant.  Sent off a PM hoping he can swoop back in for a second and clarify.

Er, yeah. I'm groovy with expenses now. The last check that came in hit what I'd already covered, give or take ten bucks. Couldn't have cut it much closer, but hey, I guess I've got faith in something. Feeling both awesome and humbled right now. Gonna watch cheesy holiday cartoons and make fun of them with the dog. Maybe string lights on that thing I was watering before it broke loose and started rolling around the yard and I realized it was a tumbleweed.

Not really. I've spent the last few months depressed and doing pretty much fuckall. I should probably get back on the stick at some point.

Or put together a new website and become a famous internet blogger.
