A classic that may be familiar to those of you who attended MagFest or Doomcon... a simple anthem of destruction best suited to the colossal monsters that occupy three of the last four stages of Tetris Attack.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors was one of the best games of it's time. Now you can hear part of the reason why: when this ominous organ began, I knew shit was about to hit the fan. The bosses in ZamN were rare, but they filled the screen and were fucking terrifying. Dr Tongue fulfilled one of the obligations of any good, timeless boss: he attacked you several times himself, often quaffing a potion before mutating into something god-awful.

Going through the game three times to reach the true final fight was so worth it.

The music is probably the most compelling reason to play any Ys game.

Of course, me, I just like bumping into people.

If you have not played Resident Evil 5, ask yourself: Do you have a friend? Do you have a PS3/X-Box 360?? Do you have a friend with a PS3/X-Box 360?

If you can hook up the co-op experience, then by all means, extend that hand and extend it swiftly. If not... well, you're looking at a prettier if lamer version of Resident Evil 4.

Now if you can get that Resident Evil 5 playthrough going, you are in for a treat when you fight Wesker for the first time. The implementation of his "super-human" attributes is quite intuitive and down-right fair to the player and makes the most of the co-op gameplay. That his music is this good and tense is the icing on the cake.

Another track that is far catchier than it has any right to be! Maybe because it's actually attempting to be weird and menacing, as opposed to the cock-rock-lite that the X Series mutates into by the PS2 entries.

Well, as I understand it, wasn't X5 supposed to be the finale of the X Series, but someone at capcom saw that bishie robots made money, and kept hemorrhaging games out of it?

It sounds like the rest of the game looks, i.e. like a half-hearted attempt to repeat Guilty Gear by the numbers because everyone knows it's never going to work that way.

It doesn't help that my roommate has some shitty versions of the Guilty Gear songs with retarded vocals added in.

Oh, finally.  That god damn demo's been out for weeks and I couldn't find that track anywhere.

Still think you can do a side-by-side with the random J-Riff in the middle and the battle theme to Persona 4, though.

UPDATE: Main composer for XIII is Masashi Hamauzu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masashi_Hamauzu), of latter SaGa and Sigma Harmonics fame.  This definitely sounds like one of his.

Today is Skies of Arcadia day.

Skies of Arcadia is a traditional cliche-laden JRPG that decided to just do everything really competently so that you can forgive the cliches and just enjoy the game.

It worked, brilliantly.

This is a good party game, since the repetitive Bosses are way too anal to single-players.

Good luck finding a Let's Play that isn't dominated by a retard at level 50 with a VIP-quality sword. Hurrr.

Some of my favorites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aboOgJSkrrw

Just impossibly cool. Wait about a minute for it to really start going, but holy hell, games rarely manage to set the mood like this one did. The rest of the soundtrack is equally as good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ufi7voMY1c

Another great soundtrack - a bit retro nowadays, though. Wait until :50 for it to get real good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW3YNnrKhaQ

BC:R's title theme and Power Plant theme are awesome as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymM6MIzLxgw

RPG had so much damn fantastic music in it I feel bad picking just the one. The boss themes were equally as good.

This is one of my favorite atmosphere tracks. It's important for a fellow designing a dungeon to set the mood for the unknown. And the dangerous. .Hack actually had some fantastic atmosphere and I always imagine myself fighting through a dungeon against packs of intriguing, larger than life enemies as activated traps flank me and crash down around me, creating an awesome and tense encounter.

ALSO, THIS:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI7wNCp8aqE

Ah, Einhander.  Child of an era when Squaresoft had way too much money and decided to try their hand at different genres before realizing that it would just be easier and more lucrative to make Final Fantasy games.  Great game, you know.  If you're into shooters, I mean; if you're not then you probably wouldn't like it, but that tends to go without saying.

The thing that stands out about Einhander's music is that there's so much of it - twenty-nine tracks, to be precise.  You'd be hard-pressed to find many shoot-em-ups that had even half that.  What this means is that... well, it's going to sound ridiculous when I say that it helps create atmosphere in a shmup (a genre of games not usually known for being atmospheric), but it's true.  They could've just had a single track of music for each stage, a boss theme, a final boss theme and an ending theme and said "that's it, we're done," but they actually went the full nine.  It also has the neat side effect of letting you identify where someone is in the game simply by listening to the music.

The crazy part is that prior to Einhander the composer (Kenichiro Fukui) only had three soundtracks under his belt from his time at Konami: Lethal Enforcers, the four-player G.I. Joe arcade game and Violent Storm (a Final Fight clone).  Then he gets hired by Squaresoft, makes this, two soundtracks for wrestling games, one for a remake of Romancing SaGa, one for Front Mission 5 and one for another Sylpheed before leaving Squaresoft to become a lecturer and hang out in Nobou Uematsu's garage on the weekends making music.  Einhander is his most well-known game simply because it's one of the only games that was released stateside and was halfway popular.

God, how am I just now noticing this thread? Doom already beat me to one of my top five videogame songs of all time. Zero is just the absolute when it comes to Ace Combat music. Ace Combat itself being the absolute when it comes to games about Dogfighting with epic music playing in the background.

I can't find a decent version anywhere, but the theme for the Espada Squad is another favorite from Zero.

Past that, I know these three were mentioned in the first music podcast, but they still make me all hot and bothered when I hear 'em.

Another winner in my book for a really great soundtrack, and actually a fun game even though basically no one on the planet seems to agree with me ever would be Evergrace. The entire experience of the game is insanely trippy, but I love the thing to death so it's all good.

I could name a million more, and probably will, but I think a good place to end is always an epic boss battle song. (Again, HQ that)

About one-fourth to one-third of the personal charm this song has for me is due to the fact that they (apparently) sampled Drop Out's hook for it.  Even barring that it's nice boss fight music regardless.  I mean yeah, the rest of DMC4 has nice boss music but this is really the one that stands out for me.

I could do an entire post on OoT, but anyone who didn't play the gold cart was deprived of the original fire temple in particular (also blood, but that's another story). Early gray carts have the original theme and blood too.

I SAID THAT IN A COMMUNITY OF NERDS IT'S HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THIS MYTH ABOUT WIND WAKER BEING TOO OCEAN TO COMPLETE COULD BE TRUE BECAUSE MOST OF YOU HAVE PROBABLY SPENT 100+ HOURS ON SPECIFIC GAMES DUE TO OCD QUIRKS.

ADMITTEDLY THE FIRST FEW PARTS OF WIND WAKER ARE HIT OR MISS BUT SHOW ME A ZELDA GAME THAT DOESN'T HAVE A QUESTIONABLE STRETCH. THEY USUALLY HAVE THE DECENCY TO HIDE IT IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE GAME(I.E. WATER TEMPLE)

FURTHERMORE THE DESIGN OF WIND WAKER IS SUCH THAT EVERY SQUARE GENERALLY HAS SOMETHING WORTH INVESTIGATING, YOU ARE GIVEN A TELEPORT SPELL RELATIVELY QUICKLY GIVEN THE SCALE OF THE GAME, AND THE TRULY BORING PART OF THE GAME IS THE TRI-FORCE HUNT, WHICH I WILL ACCEPT AS AN EXCUSE TO GIVE UP ON THE GAME.

THEREFORE THIS IS A LAME, TERRIBLE MEME THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SLAIN HERE AND NOW, YOU ADHD CLOWNSHOES.

Pretty much every place that is supposedly worth investigating is a small island or submarine in the middle of nowhere with nothing but rupees or if you're lucky, a piece of heart.  But why would you need more than the default number of hearts when combat is so piss easy?

I'd still take another round of Bullet Witch over Wind Waker.

I love Radiata Stories. Like, if Radiata Stories was a woman, even a really ugly one, I would still totally fuck it. If it was a man, I could at least offer a blowjob. I got Niku levels of obsessive on this game, I broke that shit out of it and beat it so hard that I made it unbeatable.

Because of that, I feel really guilty that I almost never mention it when favorite videogames come up. I can't really name a single aspect of the game I love, it's just the over-all experience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3PTf0HEBps

One thing is for sure, though, not enough games have jazzy beats for fighting music.

Ooh, Videogame music, my favourite kind of music! <3

My favourite of all time would have to be the music in the ace combat games, i'm actually saving up to buy the CDs now.

5: Supercircus, Closure, Lit Fuse and The Journey Home

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM3P8HPiOfc

Supercircus was my first favourite, i'm not good at explaining why i like things, i just really like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08Jcyb2hP90&feature=PlayList&p=35BFC268054CBAC8&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=5

And closure is just great, i love the piano and stuff in it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15JTf4wmsmg

Lit fuse is so heroic sounding, it's great. <3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrQrkZtg-mo&feature=PlayList&p=2CBB70AFFFEED5E7&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=18

And the Journey Home, i just think it sounds really nice.

AC6: Siege on Silvat and Liberation of Gracemeria

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKsnJqMKBDA&feature=related

This is another one where i can't explain why i like it so much, i just really do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HGQS5XSoJ4&feature=related

Liberation of Gracemeria is totally awesome, i love it so much, heroic music is my favourite, and it's pretty heroic.

AC4: Whiskey Corridor and Megalith

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Hf7p3jmPug

This one is really desert-y and adventurous sounding, AC4's soundtrack isn't as good as 5 and 6, i think, but i still really like some of the songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ6ABV_Q9qU

So Epic, i love it. :D

AC Zero: Glatisant and Zero

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTw9p-okBHo

I think the thing i like most about ace combat music is how much stuff is going on in each song, it's so busy! :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKDzOnRydWk&feature=related

Another Epic last level song, it has flamenco guitars, which is pretty great.

Anyway, sorry for posting like a billion links, but it's totally my favourite music, and i thought i'd share it with you. <3

The best part about Ace Combat, best portrayed by Megalith is their ability to make you feel like a God. In Ace Combat 4, the entire game there's this seemingly unbeatable squad called the Yellow Squadron. The leader of the squad is not just an epic war hero and ace of aces, but gets hid pride from never losing a single pilot from the squadron. There is only one point in the game before the intended fight where you can hit a Yellow fighter, you can't down the plane, but as soon as you even clip it the radio will go crazy, everyone on both sides demanding to know who could possibly get a hit on a yellow plane.

Now, the last stage of the game, a squad of eight yellow-ranked fighters come at you at the start, but with dumbed-down AI, so you can basically demolish the entire squad with two button clicks.

Just the way they do that, music that makes you feel invincible, then changing game mechanics that you've had pounded into your head to make you seem that much better at life. The ego stroking is unquestionable.

See, I almost posted that myself, but I chose not to because I couldn't find my favorite track. It's the music that plays in the Water Tour and Water Tier dungeons that open up after you beat the game.

It's really atmospheric and romantic, actually: most of it is just the sound of rain and the occasional rumble of thunder. After a few minutes pass, a few piano notes play. Another minute later, the sound of the rain is muted, and those same piano notes play again, and then the sound of rain comes back. Not exactly toe-tapping, but it is incredibly pleasant nonetheless.

Zul'Drak is one of my favorite zones. By the weird time-line mechanics of WoW, you basically arrive in the middle of this colossal, largely untouched troll empire that is in the middle of successfully(!) repelling the Scourge invasion by murdering their Gods(!!) to steal their powers.

And you come in just as the Scourge are given a new commander for their second-go-round.

It's a really cool multi-faceted zone with some unique, bad-ass quests and it uses some nice subtleties. The sky is twisted and destroyed, the scourged ground is notably warped from the territory the Drakkari still hold and this music plays during it. That starting wind instrumental.. you're basically running around trying to undo some of the damages of an apocalypse as it occurs.

Also hey the FF13 Demo had music:

You know, this is a good a place as any to ask.

I've been trying to track down the Rocket Knight Adventures OST in MP3 form... but the only one I've found seems off tune. Like, it was using the wrong tone through most of the high notes, with the occassional buzzing. It annoyed the shit out of me, so I've been looking for a better one, but no far, no dice. :(

Phantom has a special place in my heart because he burst my cherry. Before I played and beat Devil May Cry 1, I was an easy-moding wuss factory.

I died to Phantom twenty times, in a row, in one sitting on normal before I could beat him. When the game offered me Easy Difficulty after the third time, I made the right decision and kept trying.

The fact that he's by far the most personable boss in the entire game with only Gryphon as a close second makes it easy to love the guy. He gets just as mad as you do to take damage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAT64hoG22A

And then he becomes a recurring villain. And you can run from him or beat him up for more fabulous prizes.

And then he comes back with one of the most bad-ass opening riffs possible.

DID SOMEBODY SAY RAGNAROK ONLINE MUSIC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMY6QrtveGg

Fuck, this theme made Heal-Bomb farming so great. Glast Heim really was the best dungeon ever.

Speaking of great dungeon design: Crusader of Centy!

Crusader of Centy was strangely dark for a kid's Zelda rip-off. The game has you almost immediately love the ability to speak to Humans in exchange for the ability to speak to Animals. Every one from your best friends to your mother to random strangers babbles wind-dings at you and you just grab a Caterpillar and a Dog or something and run off to travel the world as a child with a sword. At one point, you even get cursed into Slime that the greatest hero in the land randomly tries to murder.

At the apex of it, you come to the Tower of Babel, where supposedly you can remove your curse. That's right! All you have to do is scale the most dangerous place in the World.

Also around this time your loyal Caterpillar, the worst animal power-up, matures into a Butterfly and becomes one of the best. I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN YOU FRIEND!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp3kmQJYAdQ&feature=related

At the top, you fight what is a floating dragon with animated sword and shield and he is just a giant mean sunnuvabitch who wants to see you fail for no reason. I think he actually had an instruction manual blurb that he wanted the treasure of Babel as well. All I knew when I saw him as a young fellow is that this bastard was standing between me and my ultimate goal for almost no other reason than the fact that he was bigger than me. With this pretty sweet track rocking.. it was time to throw my sword at his freakishly large head.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBpL2JOly5c

This boss track also plays when the GOD OF WATER LEVIATHAN uses an illusion of your mother to judge the worth of your soul(you have to defend it while damaging him D:)

The bestest Crash theme. You are in for a treat today, Video Game Music thread.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8Y7k3eB2is

Though simple, this is probably the Crash theme nearest to my heart. It's got a nice, creepy subtlety. It works majestically with N. Brio's sounds of building fury and the shattering of glass vials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoIvBb33tTo

Valve tries to keep this out of the public eye, but they actually drew inspiration for the Sniper and the Pyro from the same source.

This is still one of the absolute best 1 on 1 duel musics I've ever heard. Maybe because the scene is so perfect. The lead-up to the ultimate reveal and the meta-comic book nerd of becoming a hero and then fighting your idol is done with perfect seriousness. The play off the final theme being both heroic and an homage to the former glory of Captain Blue is just too great. You have to not get choked up because he's a merciless fucker.

The Pokemon series is often about as epic and series as you feel it is, though I sometimes feel it could be a bit more. A bit cooler. And then we get badass motherfuckers like Cyrus to show that maybe somebody at Nintendo thinks so too. If only the AI/Encounter guy could be arsed to make Team <Game Villain Group> Pokemon set-ups a bit more dangerous. Ah well. Cyrus carries his theme and his robotic, grim-faced determination with the best of them.

Chrono Cross is enjoyable until it becomes terrible. Particularly due to the music..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu6Avd-pClo&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5nelkxMKQ&feature=related

But I'm not sure what else you could call an ending that amounts to esoteric, irritating and stupid.. on top of having the plot spoon-fed to you by stand-in NPCs.. other than an abortion?

And I found the fight with Miguel to be EASY, so I actually give Cross a lot more breathing room than the average person who tries to hate it.

Hell, thinking about it, I love a lot about Cross except that the terrible bits stand out so dramatically they ruin the experience, much like the crunch of a roach would ruin a delicious piece of cake. I still routinely go to "Prisoners of Fate" for inspiration.

Whenever I play Chrono Cross, I typically just sort of gloss over the long bits of exposition linking the game to Chrono Trigger. For me the final boss is that epic dragon god, and the Time Devourer is just a bonus battle. Like a really easy Omega Weapon, or something.

Subsequently, I feel this makes the overall Chrono Cross experience far more enjoyable.

Speaking of Chrono Cross... I use the iPip player (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1559) in Fallout 3, and this is my favorite song when it comes up while I'm exploring the overworld:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52htcy2_QMk

I also use most of the Baroque soundtrack, because the atmosphere fits so incredibly well. Especially this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vtQ1J7h2qE&feature=PlayList&p=C515EBE91B2DB9D1&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=2

And these are extremely perfect for battle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYlLKCBz51c&feature=PlayList&p=C515EBE91B2DB9D1&index=12
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2_it692q1k

It's not like Fallout 3 doesn't have good music, but I found the game is much better when it is subtly poignant and atmospheric than when it tries to be clever or funny (mostly because it fails so often at the latter).

Time for a sequel to an earlier post.

I love Bowser's themes because they're so uniquely Bowser's. They belong to him. From that weird-ass instrument in the first Paper Mario's "Angry Bowser" theme to the glorious, comical marches of TTYD, you know Bowser is the King because his themes make you know.

I really loved Thousand-Year Door's way of exploring different kinds of stories in each chapter: the fantasy quest to kill the dragon, a territorial conflict between warring tribes, the drama-riddled journey of a professional fighter in the arena, the creepy mystery with the terrible twist you have to set right...

I think I agree with dessgeega (http://www.gamersquarter.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1987), though, in that while Thousand-Year Door's triumphs are greater than the original game's, its failings are likewise the worse.

(Super Paper Mario should just be stricken from the record, honestly.)
Title: Re: Video Game Music
Post by: Doom on July 26, 2009, 12:07:21 PM
I liked TYD a bit more than Paper Mario, but Paper Mario really was the purest, as dessgeega says. There's something incredibly sincere about the story being Bowser Defeats Mario and leading back up to Mario Fights Bowser.
Title: Re: Video Game Music
Post by: on July 26, 2009, 01:24:32 PM
There was nothing too terrible about Super Paper Mario. It shares it's predecessors' completely bizarre sense of humor (for a Mario game) and has plenty of the same charm.

The Doopliss section in TYD remains my favourite to this day, simply because of how shocked I was that a Mario game, of all things, managed to hit me with an awesome twist.
I literally was waiting for 10 minutes for something to happen before I tapped the controller and realized what had really happened
Title: Re: Video Game Music
Post by: jsnlxndrlv on July 26, 2009, 02:40:54 PM
Sorry, but I can't agree. Super Paper Mario is the platformer version of the RPG version of a platformer with a story more vapid than most jRPGs and which takes entire scenarios from the earlier games and reproduces them wholesale. Occasionally there will be a moment of cleverness in the game design or writing, but mostly there's just inanity. ("I'm not cragging your crag, brah.") Most damningly, the game does not value you time or attention. I probably wouldn't dislike it so much were it not for that.

I do.

Anyways.

El Gigante was one of the best set fights in the game. The pacing, context, the scene narratives, all that stuff. It's magnificent. A Heroic Dog reference just seals the deal. The music is awesome.. I love it when tracks sync up with what could actually be happy and those heavy drums would suit the earth-saking steps of Gigante perfectly. The only sorrow is that once you get strong enough/New Game+, you barely have enough time to register Gigante and his music before you blow him away.

It's not often I can dig a track on a game I have not played in detail myself. But stumbling upon this ditty from Phantasy Star 4 in association with Zio was just the best. The track name itself reaches out to tickle your brain right. Laughter. Fighting the servant of a Dark God who summons a grim, taunting effigy of that God to hover over the battlefield. The theme delivers a sense of urgency and primal life-or-death tones. It will be a quick, brutal battle that ends in absolute slaughter with no room for humor or misunderstanding.

The next one is a controversial addition to the VGMusic Thread but I think it is impossible to argue against as it is simply the best radio station in the entire series. I don't really expect anyone but me to care that much or keep track.

Speaking of which, it's getting tougher and tougher each day, but it's fun to keep the record alive and to subject myself to exciting new music or to struggle to remember old classics, like this next number:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJsFBfsymEI&feature=PlayList&p=F4D5B833418A9ECE&index=43

I seem to be relying more and more on youtube to guide me to a vaguely related next track..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQwZY0g4f0Q&feature=related

Maybe there's some mental hang-up interfering, like how I don't feel inclined to seek out music for games I haven't actually played yet. It basically comes down to raw chance or a recommendation from a friend.

I also feel strangely inclined to try and avoid the blindingly obvious unless I think it's too good to otherwise avoid. Some of you silly posters act like VG Music Thread is a race and that if we don't post every individual Gitaroo Man track, they'll somehow be gone forever.

I mean, we all know what Lavos' Theme sounds like and the primal dread it incurs. But how about this incredibly catchy number?

This is a pretty bad ass intro. I love a game that can keep your spirits up by just taking what is a "limited" chip-set and just rocking the fuck out regardless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3R9VTBR0F8

And these next two are a Frocto special. Don't Cry Jennifer is a fun track that fits on Horror like a glove. I'm real partial to the ending credits theme, or "The Nightmare Is Finally Over" because it's just so pleasant and dramatic at the same time. It carries a real feeling of relief while reminding you that you just lived through all this super tragic, epic stuff about giant babies and Miss Mary. It's also the fully extended and sounded out version of the song Frocto makes fun of the one sound guy for looping.

Imagine you are playing Gunstar Heroes. It is an excellent game, so naturally you are having fun. You encounter four bosses. Most of them never speak or interact with you, yet are so well-designed and inherently personable that you can imagine how they act entirely off their brief encounters as they pose at you, operate giant machinery, or make simple threatening gestures.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_sgbyhIj7I&feature=related

Some are even highly comedic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_66Cig4Jz4&feature=related

Some of them even break the 4th Wall and are fucking awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z95ihSiL6Y&feature=related

But the best is entirely silent... and you fight the four again. At the end of the gauntlet, in the final battle, you face Green hand-to-hand. Green is so hardcore, he can deflect the vast majority of your bullets with his PALM. His theme is dark and moody yet intense and the pace never lets up. Also it sounds like robots which is important because Seven Force.

Thanks for posting those, I've been meaning to but it kept slipping off my mind.

Everything about Demon's Crest is awesome, which makes it one of those games that are inexplicably obscure. Dammit Capcom, I'll take a Red Blaze over a thousand Blue Bombers any day of the week.

The thing that strikes me most about it is how its plot is mainly demons being dicks to each other, but the atmosphere is somehow uplifting and majestic. These evil creatures are fighting over ruins and corpses, and it still feels like their world is a world worth conquering, even if only because it has a sort of terrible, tragic beauty to it. I don't know how they did it.

I found an old quote on pyoko I made about the star of Demon's Crest.

Quote
Red Arremer once kicked a dragon's fucking head off, used it as a chamberpot, and then beat a wimpier demon to death with it. During this display he remained impeccably clean, as his boiling blood double-dared any blood or filth to land on him and QUITE FRANKLY they wanted none of that.

Pretty good summary of how awesome the game is.

I didn't like Secret of Evermore at first. Why did I buy it? Because Secret of Mana was good and they have similar names, duh! But I did not find my light-hearted bright-colored Mana romp through a fantasy world. I found a somber, clever and humorous battle for survival in a game that was good and hard at what it did. The moods were often very sad and tragic, aligning perfectly with the story's narrative. And ultimately, I would come to appreciate it, if even in a min-maxing OCD way. I may be very long overdue for a replay, to actually come to fully appreciate the script.

I find Splatterhouse music to be kind of schizophrenic. When it tries to be all horror-y, it's often generic and bland, but the games still manage to give you some badass, catchy tunes here and there.

Sometimes you must fight your way across Youtube. Sometimes you must claw your way through AMVs. Sometimes every recording of a boss kill is tainted by somebody's choice of "good" music. Sometimes..

The track doesn't exist.

But you press on. Because when you were a kid and you finished shooting your way through the apocalyptic wasteland of the future and you encountered the TANK HUNTER KILLER, this sweet synthesized riff kicked in and it was on. It was do or die, even if you were so fresh-faced you didn't even understand how rail shooters worked. Pretty sure I failed the Escort Mission several dozen times because I did not understand that I was defending the truck and would shoot at it, mistaking it's damage taken from enemies as my 'successful' efforts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJewTfouJio

My sister does not play many games, but the games she does play she develops an incredible love for. Earthbound, Toejam and Earl, Aladdin and Pocahontas.. and Mission Impossible for the N64. I must've watched or heard her play through the Banquet Mission at least a dozen times. She loved it so much and would repeat it frequently, exploring randomly for hours and being delighted by anything new and even many things repeated. And it turns out.. the game has pretty decent music overall! The Train track in particular is a good emotional piece and if I recall correctly, perfectly set to a very tense gun-fight mission.

Dude. Journey to Silius. The sound people at Sunsoft were incredible.

In other news, this thread needs some Might & Magic. And I'm starting with some seriously obscure Might & Magic: the NES port. It's so obscure I had to put it up on youtube myself. And it's a shame because the music in it is fantastic. The graphics were nothing to sneeze at either. The game itself is brutal in that "early d&d ripoff first person dungeon crawler" way, but dang, the music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0MPv7bdtN8

Fortunately, much of the music for that franchise has a more widely acknowledged case of the awesomus maximus.

This game was literally impossible for a ten year old. But apparently the battle theme is insanely catchy. I am not sure what else to say. All 7th Saga invokes in me anymore is a sense of dread at the possibility of having to play 7th Saga.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwFdHwdGE60&feature=related

I am not a big fan of Final Fantasy 5. I think it's story is kind of wonky and poorly paced, it has some of the stupidest boss/dungeon design in the series and that it's lauded entirely for being the first of it's kind. Yeah, OK, Great. Sure is a lot of anger today.

So we will sit around the library and enjoy this inexplicably toe-tapping tune.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piXeYKm6zUE&feature=related

Legend of the Mystical Ninja with KID YING and DR YANG was one of my all-time favorite games. I always sort of dreaded actually entering my first action stage. I would pain-stakingly travel across town, farming to max weapons, getting a ton of cash and bouncing happy-paw cats and stuff, do all the mini-games, etc. Eventually I'd have to enter an actual zone where monsters could kill me in a strictly 2D plane.

But hey, LotMN had incredibly great stage design and peppy music, so as you ran through the graveyard with this tune working it's way through your skull you would eventually be giddy and content. Until you had to fight that God Damn Ghost and the Boss Theme was catchy but really just the same 12 second stretch on infinite loop.

These are two tracks. The first makes you feel light and bubbly and wonderful and like maybe you should be walking around the world, frolicking in the grass, trying to eat delicious fruit, that sort of thing. A lot of the Tetris Attack tracks evoke this sort of light-hearted euphoria in me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXTrMQqB94M&feature=PlayList&p=E29F4EF54F9E34DC&index=11

But I main GARGANTUA BLAAAARRRRRG so here is his theme which does the same but he is from a lava wasteland so his theme reflects catchy, zingy beats and a really cool background noise that conveys wonder and awe.

Tetris Attack will brighten your mood and lower your blood pressure because it's tunes are made from pure joy and the laughter of children.

It took me an ungodly amount of time to actually unlock Dracula's castle. That Albus fight is a fucking chore and I had to do it like five times!

Anyway, this is a remix of the opening theme which itself gets your heart pumping because not only is this a new Castlevania game, it's the classiest looking new Castlevania game ever! And the Castle is the climax! And the music is great! That is important because it's ridiculously hard and you'll probably need to farm it up a bit, so the music better be catchy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1hfIUQqk8w

Albus is a pretty taxing fight and his theme is a pretty taxing theme. I am a big fan of the first five seconds leading up to the RAWK that provides the back-drop of a catchy theme with a tricky, elusive combatant. Bonus points for instrument choice(organ!) and overall drama.

Welcome back to Doom's Youtube Dump. I actually went back and trimmed or rewrote most of my posts in this thread. My old record was 90 days straight but I got caught up in the drama of meeting that daily quota as opposed to the drama of excellent music. Then that other thread was made, hahahahahahaha. Anyways.

Here's a single music track that holds more emotion than the entire script of Sword of Mana.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR_X8e6ZKP8&feature=related

Note how in the first few seconds, the tempo is immediately raised to a fever pitch, usually synced to the approach of a giant monster! Then the music breaks it down to business, making us well aware that this is an epic of fantasy drama and combat! It loops pleasurably and considering the actual pacing of Adventure, is basically the most perfect track imaginable. It's also reserved for the INCREDIBLY EXCELLENT RPG practice of having two boss tracks, one for mini and one for epicly huge.

The air over the battlefield is thick with smoke and ash. Even the sea wind can't cut through the stench of gunpowder, blood, and charred flesh. A broken artillery piece rests with its operators, now merely scraps of meat and shattered bones fought over by a pack of starving, feral dogs. That desolate coast is full of death. Grey, awful, dusty death.

Two swordsmen find a clearing among the rubble. The battle was not theirs, but the field will suit them nonetheless. By the time one of their blades finds its sheath again, the dogs will have a new prize.

I wish I had something clever to say about the following, but really, it's fighting game music. Brutally awesome fighting game music, but with the exception of something spectacularly atmospheric like Way of the Blade up there, it's not like there's much of a story to tell.

That said, KOF music is... how can I say... it tends not to be video-gamey, in the best possible way. I don't like to say it like that, but it does often feel like it has a real-world flavor, full of unusually relatable charm and personality.

The NES version of Nobunaga's Ambition II was my first taste of strategy games, and I loved it in no small part because of its historical aspect. It blew my young mind that all these people existed, that they were real men who did important things, and that I was put in charge of doing these things as best as I could and see how I measured up in comparison. It got me to learn a lot about that place and time, about what happened to whom, and why, and eventually it got me interested in broader history, the history of my home and of other countries. Looking back on it, it probably shaped a good bit of my life, or my academic life at least.

Another reason I loved it was the music. Every single piece in it was good, from the opening to the different battle themes and option screen and victory/defeat sequences all the way to the ending. Back then I didn't know it had been composed by Yoko Kanno, and it's doubtful I would even have known who she was, but now it's one more confirmation that I already had good taste at the time.

One of my favorite tracks was the "generic" main theme, that played on the fief management screen for every daimyo but Nobunaga himself. It's a good thing that I liked it so much, because you heard it a lot.

It's the music that starts at 1:08 in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTV06jd9j3A

Many, many years later, I'm going through the albums at Galbadia Hotel (http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks.php), and I see Koei music collections. Somehow I'm doubtful that I'd find a lot I'd recognize, but I download the unlabeled tracks anyway, just in case. Listening to them one by one, I suddenly stumble upon this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCkQHIdOEY8

I'm not too proud to admit I got a little emotional over it.

That track is from the second Black Mages album, with vocals by Kazco Amano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazco_Hamano). It's not actually played in-game (in any version that I'm aware of anyway).

(it's pretty shameful how much i love that particular rendition)

I really like that woman's voice. She has a sexy rocker chick thing going on in that song. I used to like Ai Wo Torimodose for the same reason.

Then I learned that it was sung by two dudes.

still like it tho

So I made a mix CD and told Stush I'd post up the track list here. It was supposed to be an album of MGS and SH music, but it ended up being mostly SH. Feel free to criticize.

I also showed a real prevalence towards SH2 and 3, since those are the ones I know the best.

Silent Hill 1 - Intro
Love Psalm
Promise
I Want Love (Studio Mix)
Theme of Laura
You're Not Here
Calling To The Night
MGS4 - Here's To You
MGS3 - Cobras In The Jungle
Way to Fall
Rain of Brass Petals
ENCLOSURE
Please Love Me... Once More
Heavens Night
Metal Gear Solid - The Best Is Yet To Come
MGS4 - Metal Gear Saga Slow (I cut off the first half of the song :3c)
True
Forest
Letter - From The Lost Days
Laura Plays The Piano
Theme of Laura (Reprise)
Promise (Reprise)
Noone Love You
Magdelene
MGS1 - Title Theme

The goal here was to make an album that was relaxing, mellow as hell and I would be able to have playing in the car while on a date with a girl who was normal and not some sort of cook.

My next few posts are going to be Wild ARMs music, because frankly that stuff deserves to be listened to more than it is, especially the later installments. I was trying to come up with the very best and couldn't reduce the playlist to less than two and a half hours. I'm not gonna make you listen to that much but I am making this a multiple-parter over several days.

Oh, of course, you're sitting there in your chair, all thinking "zed you are so full of poo it comes out your ears when you tip sideways, i am not listening to wild arms music because i have lots of more important stuff to do and other threads to read plus on top of that it probably sucks butt". If that was an even partly accurate description of your thought process then you are the wrongest you have ever been and ever will be. In a way it might be a comfort to you; it's all uphill from here. Unless you're on your deathbed, in which case, way to screw up at the last minute.

Anyway. Today's all Wild ARMs 5.

A Muzzle Dancing in Hatred
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS19rrW3HS8
Man, that build-up. The violin, then that spanish-sounding guitar, then the... recorder? (At least I'm pretty sure it's a recorder.) In what other series are you gonna hear that? This plays in one of the game's less remarkable dungeons, unfortunately, but frankly I didn't mind it because the music more than made up for it.

The Road to Tomorrow Follows Behind You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKtO8AZLp2I&feature=related
Yeah, Wild ARMs has a lot of unusually long track names. Anyway. More recorder! This one is delightfully retro, with almost a 60s spy flick groove to it. It plays in an early dungeon, at a time when the party has all its illusions intact and travels mostly to help out a friend.

The Dry Wind Blow Over You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlBP0cOMd5U
One of the overworld themes (this game has five), and arguably the best, though the others are nothing to sneeze at. It has the strongest wild west feel to it, and is closer to the overworld themes in the rest of the series than the others.

When the Heart Ignites
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpoer9RopSE
If there's something you know when you're going into a Wild ARMs game, it's that there's gonna be whistlin'. This here is the main battle theme; it's easily one of my favorites in the series, though it may be because the battle system is so good. Combat in WA 1 through 3 was basically bog-standard JRPG fare, but 4 introduced the HEX system, which has a simple and intuitive emphasis on position, almost like a miniature strategy game. Incidentally, there was a radical shift in music styles in 4, possibly due to Masato Kouda and Nobuyuki Shimizu collaborating with Michiru Naruke on the soundtrack, as opposed to Naruke working alone on 1-3. Kouda returned for 5, and worked with Noriyasu Agematsu. You can definitely tell the new composers brought their own flavor to the series; not only was it a somewhat necessary change (as I did find 3 getting a little samey in places), but it's easily as good as, if not better than, the older stuff. Which is saying a lot.

Haters gonna hate: it's Wild ARMs 4 time!

As I said last time, WA4 was the start of a lot of different things for the series. Some of it was refreshing, some of it was clumsy. The music especially went in a new direction, and while I did find that some of the original flavor was lost, causing portions of the soundtrack to feel somewhat generic, the new flavor was something I didn't know I craved until I tasted it.

Perilous Change
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DDRRshza-U
This is where the flute shenanigans started. (Yeah, that might be a transverse flute, not a recorder. I'm ashamed to say I've played both in high school and still have trouble telling the difference. I was awful though, so that probably explains it.) This is where I realized there was something new going on with the music and that I didn't mind because I loved it. It has the same retro groove as "The road to tomorrow..." from last time, but applied to a sneaking-around situation instead of being bold and optimistic.

Nightless City Guara Bobelo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_cTMwAZil0
I didn't know I had a favorite RPG town until I got to Guara Bobelo, and it was it. It's not exactly somewhere I want to be, but the atmosphere was incredible. It's hard to define the technology level in the game, but you get the feel that the world was almost sci-fi, until war broke it. And it's not ancient history and lost civilizations; there are still broken tanks and abandoned weapons all over the place. The party's actions determine if the world will recover, or if the ghosts of that war will finish it off. Guara Bobelo is an illusion of hope, a once-holy place where dreams now go to die, either quickly in the combat arena, or slowly in the lamplit streets littered with the destitute exploiting the destitute. But it still has that shine of glamour, that possibility that your wildest desires can be fulfilled if you're willing put it all on the line. It's a bizarre kind of honest, unmasked, bloodstained Las Vegas. And somehow it's reflected in its music, a ballsy, jazzy piece that you'll either love or hate.

Over the wind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiPxE3P2Qho&feature=related
There's no overworld in WA4, only a world map, so there's technically no overworld theme. That said, there are several areas that serve to represent travel between places, mostly roads and other wide-open outdoors places, and this song plays over many of them. It's an example of where the wild west flavor was turned down without the new flavor being turned up to compensate, so it doesn't especially feel like a Wild ARMs piece of any era. I still like it a lot though, I love the simple rhythm of it, and how it serves as a solid, recurring "journey" theme.

Dark Grey Back Ry (Buckeye Station)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lde4VGGAJlc
This town theme is WA through and through, almost more so than any other. It's kind of badass in a cheeky way; makes me want to kick back on the prairie with a cold beer, and I don't even drink. It also reminds me of Team Fortress 2, for some reason.

this plays every time you have to assemble a party for story missions. This is a good track, simply because if you must put a song into your game that the player has to hear over and over, you might as well make it a pretty good one, even if it's just for navigating equipment menus.

Full Soundtrack linked from there.

I like the idea of making one really good, iconic theme and riffing off it from there. Strong tracks like We Are Finally Cowboys and Steel Python are great and classic boss themes that nicely divide the segments of smoothly cleaving through goons to the tune of the Zako. You have the odder stuff like Stop Hanging DJs and the totally chill lounging music from the Motel and the Motorcycle themes. And some obligatory pop with Heavenly Star.

No More Heroes is pretty easy to relax and play just due to the audio massaging of the mind. Nothing but good vibes.

Mach 13 Elephant Explosion is my favorite because it's just a down and dirty rhythm. Great for background listening.

Are you a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas?

There was a Playstation 2 game-sequel, where Oogie comes back and Jack uses a snot-blob to do video game whip things.

But here's the cool part.

Every boss fight is an original song with Jack lines, done over the movie's music.

And you can apparently play a little Gitaroo Man mini-game to deal bonus damage to the boss.

I think the system gets a bad rep on its sound because when it's bad, it's an ear-splitting trainwreck, and the inferior technology means what was merely "okay" back then can't pass mustard in retrospect. But clearly some developers figured out how to make it work, like, say, Rare and Sunsoft did for the NES.

Yeah, the road rash music was always great, rob hubbard did good stuff! But I dunno, I thought 3's music wasn't as good as the other two.
Maybe it's just because I never rented that one and don't have the nostalgia, The first two were regular rentals when I was younger, along with gunstar heroes, rocket knight adventures and for some reason, this pinball game where you could make your own tables, can't rightly remember why I rented that one so much.

Man, Startropics 2 had its share of stinkers, but when it was any good at all, it hit it out of the park. (Yes, I have inserted a baseball reference because this post is meant mainly for an American audience and will never be read in Japan.) It was released in 1994, and was made by the Nintendo division that was apparently working on Super Punch-Out at the same time; it's hard to be much more end-of-an-era, turn-off-the-lights-and-lock-the-doors than that. On one hand, they knew they were shutting down the NES, but on the other hand, they definitely had bigger things on their plate.

On the technical side of things, on making the most of the console's audio, I wouldn't say it's up to the level of even much earlier titles from Sunsoft or Rare or Tecmo, but as far as I can tell it's about as good as it gets for first-party titles on the NES.

startropics 2 dungeon theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lChMI4HCZb4&feature=related#)
The first one in there is excellent, but the one that starts at 1:11 is grating and dull. (And then of course at 2:48 there's the remixed dungeon theme from the first game which is awesome by default.)

startropics 2 dungeon music pt2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix57jr2kNcI&feature=related#)
The one at 1:33 is crap, but everything else is extremely good, especially starting at 3:21.

I haven't been a huge fan of Dragon Quest music since 8. It's adequate at the very least for when you're playing, but somehow not much has been particularly memorable. I can hum the entire OSTs for 1-4, and a good chunk of 7, but I'm honestly hard-pressed to remember more than a couple pieces from 8 and 9 clearly. I'm not quite sure why.

That said, the song for the Celestrian Observatory is a big exception.
Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - Angelic Land (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmEmnP0qsn8#)

Though the main melody is definitely noble and majestic, it's not the straight-up divine, heavenly and somewhat distant feel of, say, the Zenithian theme from 4. The Celestrians are a force for good, but to a degree, they stumble in the dark, hanging on to threads of prophecy far under an absent god, some of them clearly having come to put ritual before purpose. And the music only gets more appropriate when you learn the details of the proceedings at the Observatory, with the sacrifice and fragile hope at the center of it all. Even coming through the DS speakers, it's by far my favorite track of the last two games of this series.

I've been playing Sengoku Rance a lot lately, and I really love the music in the game, hell, I really like the game in general, It's probably one of my favourite strategy/rpg type games, but I sorta wish it wasn't such a pervy game so it'd be more socially acceptable to play it.

But it's not like you guys care about that. :D

I really like the new Castlevania and I especially like its final boss theme.  It's a bit on the "oh man, I'm so epic" side, but it gets good and it even throws in a reference to "Beginning" from Castlevania 3 near the end, sort of.

I don't normally care for OC Remix, as I feel that a lot of stuff of theirs gets a little tired and repetitive (Oh look, another 90s club mix style remix), but their "Album" projects tend to have some nice winners as they usually go all out for them.

The Donkey Kong Country 2 album, a tribute and remixing of David Wise's best known game music, has one incredibly well-done track that stands out above and beyond the other songs: The remix of "Kong Rescued", the credits theme of the game.

Because it was actually done by David Wise himself.

Maybe I should have bolded the "almost". I like the B/W version. The opening's not as good, but it compensates by having the rest of the song be far better than the original. But there's still very few versions I like. They're all just lacking some intangible dramatic tension. Probably because the simplicity of the original Gameboy forced the song to be sharp and jarring and the later versions took it upon themselves to expand and mellow out a bit.

still not a boy btw

While not my favorite Megaman song, the "Whistle Concert" from Mega Man 3 stands out in my mind as the first song I had to cheat to really appreciate.  The song ends very shortly, and the credits start up.  But if a player pushes Up and A on controller 2, it freezes most of the game action.  Sometimes this works on bosses, sometimes it just makes Megaman a sitting duck since he can't walk.

If you did this at the ending, you could keep Megaman locked in places so the credits don't roll, and get to hear the full song.

Xenoblade is pretty cool, guys.  I get to listen to nice music while I traverse the incredibly huge, scenic lands that make up some long dead behemoth's butt-crack. Highly recommended to buy an import copy and hack the shit out of your Wii to play it. If you happen to be a filthy European, skip the latter step if desired.

This track is definitely my favourite in the game, I love the violins~

The soundtracks keep getting more orchestrated as time goes along, soon they're gonna have to have like, dueling orchestras.

Yeah, like a lot of F2P games, it is grindy as fuck if you don't pay REALMONEYZ. Still, it's a fun game, as long as you can get a couple of friends to play with you. Otherwise you're better off running solo, unless you enjoy playing with pubbies that don't understand the importance of sticking together, or who try to fight Oilers with firebombs, even after you and everyone else have told them repeatedly that that's not a very good idea.

Altaïr started out as a featureless douchebag, and the plot of the first Assassin's Creed wasted no time obliterating every trace of what little personality he did have. I wanted to call him a broody-broody-no-family but then I realized he doesn't even have that much. I don't remember any of the music from his game.

Ezio Auditore's a fun-loving skirt-chasing mofo with a heart of gold, and the fact that he more-or-less was born and raised to be the Italian Renaissance equivalent of a bro in no way diminishes how relentlessly entertaining it is to embody him at any stage of his life. I don't think I could ever forget the AC2 main theme.

Alright so I had Silent Hill 2's Betrayal stuck in my head and I was humming the melody of it while I was making mint truffles this afternoon (which is kinda weird), but I kept deviating into some other song I couldn't immediately place, and it really really bugged me. Until I put a finger on it. I think.

The games came out within a year of one another (Alice in 2000 and SH2 in 2001), but in any case it's not like I'd be silly enough to insinuate the possibility of plagiarism. I guess the resemblance just tickled my subconscious.

One thing I appreciate is good theming.  Effectively using even the most simple of techniques, like a good motif, makes me like a game that much more.

For instance, in Dynasty Warriors, if you do the stages in the intended order, the first song in the game you hear is "Crush 'Em All".
DYNASTY WARRIORS 7 BGM - Crush 'em All 進軍 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dZKk-_j3EM#ws)

After numerous levels, four story modes, and seeing the conflict from all sides, the final stage uses this song, appropriately called the "The Last Battle".
DYNASTY WARRIORS 7 BGM - The Last Battle 成都攻略戦・晋 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-3O7yoHyP4#ws)

...which, at its core, is just a more grandiose version of Crush 'Em All.  The game bookends itself.

There's not a lot of games that make me regret not having a PS3 or Xbox360. That said, I'm pretty much done watching a LP of Nier, so it turns out there's one more of 'em than I thought.

The title and Wily's Castle themes from Megaman 2 were both in the trailer, but I think just about anybody could have called those two.

Might be interesting how much of the greater MM franchise will show up.  Tracks from Megaman X?  A Megaman.exe assist trophy?  Tron Bonne dressup minigame?

Tron Bonne dressup minigame?

iirc the name is "Super Smash Bros 4", not "Brent and Friday's and a lot of other people's fantasy fetish involving Miss Tron"

Balance and Ruin: Inspired by Final Fantasy VI, An OverClocked ReMix Album (Trailer) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKa47K1Rcbo#ws)

Enjoying it so far.  I don't usually like OCRemix; it tends too far toward the techno/MIDI for my tastes.  But this has some pretty solid orchestral arrangements going on.

My favorite so far is Shadow's theme, which goes full Morricone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ennio_Morricone) with whistling and harmonica.

Further thoughts. (http://www.corporate-sellout.com/index.php/2013/07/09/balance-and-ruin/)

Seriously, if you haven't listened to the Bohemian Rhapsody version of the Opera House sequence, then what the fuck are you waiting for, an invitation?

Got the ace combat game on 3DS, It has some pretty awesome music.

Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble OST - Fighter's Honor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjVvQxa-hPY#ws)

The soundtrack was done by heaps of different people, so there's a lot of variation, rock and techno and orchestral stuff and even some rap type stuff, I really like how this music sounds like it should be in a fantasy game, but it fits in with ace combat so well.

This morning I came to the realization that the Hotline Miami soundtrack has been the only thing playing in my car for over two months.

Hotline Miami Soundtrack - Miami 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg8Ss61yJWs#ws)

"Horses Steppin" - Sun Araw (Hotline Miami OST) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtS1ovgsYAQ#)

"Crystals" - M.O.O.N (Hotline Miami OST) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB63r8nJaII#)

How can an album inspired by the soundtrack for Drive have so much better driving music than it does?

I once went to the grocery store while half-asleep and with this soundtrack on my mp3 player; when it shuffled to Crystals I started experiencing mild disassociation. It's probably the closest I've ever been to being high.

Anyway I don't do that anymore. By which I mean the soundtrack's still on there but I make sure I'm well rested when I go.
