Title: The Day the Godzilla Stood Still
Post by: Brentai on May 27, 2010, 06:02:50 PM
index.php was missing, I don't know why.  I plopped one in from the latest build of SMF and that seems to be letting the thing at least run.  Further information as it is discovered.

That error you see up there is bitching about something on Sharkey's WordPress, which the forum is kind of awkwardly shoved into a directory under.  That is kind of weird and probably relevant.

That was a weird hour or so. Like the scene in Snow Crash where Hiro goes into the bowels of the internet only with more Christmas lists and Stalin flash applets.

If that wasn't what the bowels of the internet were like in Snow Crash then that book is far less representative than I was led to believe.

Hey while I'm here, you should have the most popular forums on top(Gaming) and you should rename one of the Real X forums and probably "High Context Discourse" because that sounds more like the SERIOUS POLITICS FORUMS than Real World does.

There's a galactic fuckton of errors having to do with uploaded avatars in the log, from close to the time of the crash.  I'm going to err on the side of caution and disable them for the time being, seeing as how it's pretty damn likely there's a potential exploit in that function and I can name at least one guy who likes to occasionally wander back here and fuck with us using stupid PHP tricks.

PS: Ditto for image attachments.  A couple of the guys here can get you some image hosting if need be, and if gently prodded I might actually get off my ass and whip up little personal Photobucket thing I keep threatening to make.

I think most of TT tends to forget this place exists. I didn't even know it existed until like three months ago.

Also, quoting isn't working for me right now, I've noticed.

Okay, there's a bunch of maintenance buttons on this admin panel that I can basically faceroll over and see if that fixes anything.  If anybody's against this, speak in the next five minutes or so or forever shut your fucking mouth.

I'd like to see forumsplosions more along the lines of graphics cards overheating during TF2. Where it puts the wrong textures on surfaces, so you have guns made out of fence and forts made out of Heavyface.

All the options for avatar changing are gone now, not just uploading.

Post by: Brentai on May 27, 2010, 07:26:23 PM
Sorry 'bout that.  Try now.

Maintenance options did pretty much nothing.  I kind of want to try reinstalling SMF because there are a few things in these files that disturb me.  Alternately if you guys want to take a walk on the wild side there's a release candidate of 2.0 out...

Well, it's broken in a fuckload of ways it wasn't before, but at least you can load the damned thing.  I had to hack into a server control panel that I didn't even know existed to fix the crap that the upgrader pulled.

I was going to use the bulk of my three-day weekend to look at places to cock-nippling live but I guess I can shove that aside for a bit in order to track down all the spillions of intsy little bugs that have spawned from the black flaming depths of Hell now.

I don't think that's what happened to us.  That post is a year old, and I'm pretty sure we were using 1.1.11, and the exploit was patched in 1.1.9.

You're right, it is a year old.  This little bastard stuck it in way back when (http://brontoforum.us/index.php?action=profile;u=249), and somehow it never got accessed until today.  Check it out:

Code: [Select]
...

Whoops, scratch that.  The forum goes whitescreen on me when I try to post it.  Just close your eyes and imagine a bunch of jpeg gobbledygook with a very cute bit of PHPscript nestled into it.  So, apparently they either didn't patch it very well, or we broke the seal somehow.  Which of you dicklesses shut off the power grid?

Anyway, with that mystery solved, I can now move on to removing the problem and then my work will be done.  ...oh, except for fixing the vast amount of shit I broke while blindly trying to enact a solution, of course.

As much as it bites my dick, getting rid of Kabbage's apatosaurus is the quickest way to fix the most pressing issues.

(Fun fact: Firefox's spellcheck will flag apatosaurus and replace it with brontosaurus.)

Anyway, quick fixes are probably a good thing right now because I'm reaching the point where I might fuck something up completely if I try to dig too deep, simply out of sheer exhaustion.

Okay, I'm going to bed.

Sorry for leaving the site the color of a Violet Beauregarde, but tomorrow I need to make a case for why my boss should convert me to full time and start giving me a shitload more money.

I'll try mentioning I stopped the fucking Russian Mafia from hacking my forum last night, which is actually kind of relevant to what I do, but I don't think she's going to be very impressed anyway.

Brent installed some software, and now the dinosaurs are dead. Probably killed by an asteroid, or something. Are you sure you're actually fixing the forum software, and not some other program altogether (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003049)?

Seriously, though, thanks for working on this.

I still have a copy of index.php and the various style sheets laying on my desktop from when I last upgraded the theme - let me know if you need either.

I'll try and get the Bronto theme up and working later tonight.

Just so we're clear, the hack we suffered wasn't really a virus per se, only affected SMF files, and seemed to serve no purpose other than to generate spam popups (which it basically failed to do).  You're not infected with a keylogger or any sort of horrific bullshit.

You post someone's actual house on the internet with the implication that you're going to show up stabbin', you're not going to live that down. I'd be really fucking worried about this whole thing if people did just forget.

Man, all the exciting stuff happens when I'm not around. :rage:

Could someone be a dear and make it so that clicking on the forum banner takes the user back to the index?  I can do without a lot of things on a forum (like avatars and sigs, amirite?), but that particular thing is so ingrained into me that it drives me insane when it's not there.

Gah, doesn't look that's an option with this theme. I'll see about a workaround but THESE THINGS TAKE TIME

I would like that to work as well, though, so rest easy, it's on The List.

Side note, the forum has never looked better or run faster.  It even got rid of the terrible streaks that were produced on my iPhone.  Also, I'm not the kind of man who would be adverse to art lining the borders or buttons, to help give it a little less generic forum feel.
