Title: I'm in the mood for some Mining and some Crafting. Let's Play... Terraria!
Post by: R^2 on November 28, 2012, 07:03:23 AM
So I tried downloading the Minecraft demo because I want to be merely late to the party and not miss out on what I gather some of you cool kids are still doing.

Turns out Minecraft runs at about .3 to .5 fps on my computer. I've seen $200 budget machines at Wal-Mart with better specs than what I've got, so this is no great surprise, but still.

So I'm all like "Minecraft why u no have any low-resource options" and Minecraft is all
(http://www.intentionallyblank.net/images/forumresources/minecraftwithit.gif)

But there's a game that's pretty well close to the same thing, only in nice 2D.

So first we generate a character. Stoic bald black men are rather underrepresented in video games, don't you think?

Then we randomly generate a world. I'll stick with a small one for now.

I ran the game and dicked around for a couple hours to make sure everything worked okay, but beyond finding some basic copper and iron ores, I didn't accomplish much. This is a blind LP, I'm avoiding spoilers and game guides in the spirit of exploration.

Generation takes a while.

That doesn't sound good. Also listed are "Making world evil", and on a lighter note, both "Putting rocks in dirt" and shortly after, "Putting dirt in rocks".

And here we are! A small patch of bare stone, a bunch of trees, and an NPC walking back and forth.

I think his name is Kyle or something. He's sort of an introductory guide to the game, and gives you some basic help on game concepts and how to craft stuff. Among the things he tells you are:
- Use axes on trees, picks on dirt and stone, and hammers on background elements. Chopping trees for wood is a good place to start on your own shelter.
- You can craft a few things yourself, but for any more you'll need a wooden workbench.
- Kill slimes for gel, combine wood and gel for torches.
- Underground are "Crystal Hearts" that extend your life. You need a hammer to get them.
- If you gather Fallen Stars, which appear randomly at night and disappear at dawn, you can increase your magic capacity. My magic capacity is currently 0 so hey why not.
- If you build homes, people will move into them. Homes need to be completely enclosed in walls, with a source of light, a door, a chair, and a table. (Beds are apparently somewhat advanced crafting.)

There's nothing that pauses the advance of time in this game, so while I'm talking, we get attacked by a slime. A few stabs with my copper shortsword is enough to kill it, but the controls for the game are awkward enough that I take a few needless hits anyway.

That numerical menu at the top is the quick-selection bar, allowing you to press a number key to switch between tools. Only the bar across the top of the keyboard works, the number pad doesn't. As a left-handed player who remapped the movement controls to the arrow keys instead of WASD, this seems needlessly cumbersome.

Kyle, or whatever his name is, resumes his lesson.
- Only one person will live in a home. Merchants will appear if you have at least 50 silver coins. Nurses move in if you increase your life maximum. Arms dealers appear if you have a gun. Defeating a strong monster will attract a dryad. A demolitionist can do something with explosives I find.
- Make a grappling hook from three chains and a hook. Skellingtons tend to carry hooks.
- Smashing a shadow orb can make meteors fall. Shadow orbs are found in "corrupt" areas.

Well, let's get started.

In a shocking change from Minecraft, chopping the base out from under a tree destroys the entire tree, showering you with useable wood and a couple acorns.

The local wildlife are not smart enough to keep their distance from you while you are swinging your axe or pick around.

Mind the falling wood beams and flying chunks of dismembered rabbit.

Good a spot as any, I suppose.

From what I've seen of monster movement, there's no reason not to have your abode float in the air, only enterable from the top or bottom. In this case I wall myself completely off while I do my first crafting, so the monsters don't bother me. I don't know if zombies can open (or smash) doors in.

This is the crafting interface. Rather than placing materials on a grid and letting the shape of them determine what's made, you just choose what you want from a list. The list automatically includes items you have materials to make, determined by what sort of crafting furniture you're standing by. First up: a workbench.

Plunk. Now we're standing by some crafting furniture, so there's more options available.

I fill in the back walls of my little shed.

Which keeps out the natural light, which is waning anyway as sunset approaches. It is dark, something something grue.

Better.

My first attempts at a hammer end up with a randomly-assigned trait! And that trait is "Broken", making the hammer kind of terrible.

My second attempt also lands a trait, this time a good one.

Excuse me wtf are you doing

Down on the ground there, hard to see in the lack of daylight, is my axe. Somehow in closing a menu not only did I accidentally drop it, but it phased through the wall of my shed and fell to the ground outside.

Here's the problem:

I NEED THAT AXE TO GET OUT OF MY SHED

Wood is destroyed by axes, even if you've placed it yourself. Swords, hammers, and picks won't break apart the shed walls. And now my axe, through bug or glitch or my own careless ignorance, is well outside my reach. You can't make a wooden axe on a workbench, and I don't have any of the metal I need to make a new one.

I'm stuck.

I quit and reload, which respawns me on the same patch of rock in the previous-forest as before. (I don't know if it's possible to reset my spawn point.) So I'm out, but in reloading the gameworld, my axe disappeared. I'm axeless.

But not swordless, which is good news when the zombies start wandering in. Somehow a wooden sword has a better attack arc and does more damage than a copper one.

Well, let's get digging.

Pictured: the least surprising Steam alert ever.

There was a small copper vein here, but I found that pretty much by luck, have no decent leads in this hole, and didn't find enough to do much with.

I also get attacked by a Demon Eye, which fly around in lazy arcs and loops and do surprisingly large amounts of damage when they hit.

Without any better leads, I keep digging, and find some iron ore too. Kyle falls into the pit, so I walled him off.

I craft a new work bench here in my impromptu mine, and use it to build a furnace.

With a furnace I can smelt my copper and iron ores into useable ingots... but not enough to do anything useful with.

Digging at random isn't doing me much good, so I go off in search of a natural cavern. Instead I find a lake.

I build a bridge across.

Good a spot as any. Let's play Spelunky!

Just a few steps in and I've found another copper vein. I have to put down some wooden platforms to reach it.

Not bad.

I tear down my scaffolding before I go, though.

Just in the other direction, iron and copper.

A jar! You can break these open to collect the items inside.

Like this one.

Breaking through the wall here reveals a much larger cavern. There's a chest on the other side, so I break open the nearby jar for the copper coins inside and leap across.

Opening the chest reveals several items inside, including nine iron bars!

And a spear. It's stronger than my sword, so.

A little experimentation indicates that you always stab towards the mouse cursor. I can aim!

Finally, I hammer the chest off the ground and take it with me. Hey, free chest.

Fighting with the mouse and keyboard in tandem proves tricky.

And I'm eventually knocked into the shaft leading down, well out of the range of my torch.

Much better. And I landed on some clay, which I mine out.

As I finish, a Demon Eye starts bumping into the walls I built to keep monsters out. Seems like it's workAAAAGH

Note: sometimes Demon Eyes get lucky and find the one wooden platform in your wall, and fly through it.

It's as close to a motherlode as I've seen so far! I might have enough to do something useful, so I don't explore any further for now.

And as I exit, there's a Fallen Star right there by the entrance. (The copper coins are zombie loot.)

But being outside at night is a good way to get mobbed by monsters. I'm killed, which in this difficulty mode drops all your money. In harder modes, death deletes your character instead.

I respawn, next to another Fallen Star and the original pit I dug.

With enough iron bars, I can make an anvil.

And with an anvil, I can craft metal items. Like axes! I have an axe! I'm right back where I was at the start of the game!

I hammer up my anvil, workbench, and furnace, and carry them out of the pit.

Ah, that's better. Just needed a little work and a few holes in the walls for access, and it's almost like home.

Speaking of homes...

DO YOU MIND I AM WORKING HERE

I put a little flag on the wall indicating that apartment is for Kyle.

The big one with the stone armor statue and flowerpot is mine, of course. Or would be, if I could figure out how to make it thus.

On my way back across the lake, I pick up my dropped money and... my own tombstone. Not sure what it might be used for, but eh.

I don't have any way to deal with water yet, so deep pools are an effective dead end. I hope this stuff I just broke out of the wall doesn't pool anywhere I need to go.

Neat.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be able to do that.

Shit, a giant worm. This screencap was taken after he'd already hit me a few times, these guys are basically Demon Eyes that are much faster and can move through solid objects.

Found some sand.

And an underground lake.

And some mud.

And some silver. Neat.

...water!

I could swim my way out, I think.

Instead I bust through the wall and drain the lake I saw beWHWHHHARRHRHRAHHAHHGPGGHAHHRHRGPH pff pff pff pff CHRIST that's cold.

Anyway, having reached a dead-end, I backtrack back up the main shaft.

And find another chest.

Whoever left these behind sure was fond of spears and unworked iron bars.

You can get the hell out of my apartment.

Silver ingots!

I haven't even met these guys yet, but since they're present I can assign them homes.

Milton has a helmet that provides light for sale. I totally want one; planting torches is getting tedious. But it costs gold coins, I don't have any gold yet, and there doesn't appear to be a gold<->silver<->copper conversion rate. (Other than the craft bench, which lets you turn one silver coin into 100 coppers.)

I craft a lamppost, to add a little style to my apartment building entrance.

This is why exploring at night is bad, kids. So many monsters.

I'll spend the night in relative safety, crafting things instead. Sand equals glass equals glass walls equals a nice window in my apartment.

A zombie also drops a shackle, my first piece of defensive gear. It means I take slightly less damage and swing weapons infinitesimally faster.

Where I died last: a sunflower patch.

Just in case sunflowers on the surface indicate something nice belowground, I dig up the flowers and mine a little hole. But there's nothing.

There's another cave further along, though. It's full of cobwebs, which slow you down if you move through them but are easily broken. And collected, although I can't imagine what they might be used for.

I am eventually knocked down a shaft and slain when I hit bottom. Falling damage is very much a thing.

Rather than walk halfway across the world map (I have no idea if it's actually halfway, but it's a schlep), I just start digging straight down from the spawn point. Maybe I'll find something nice, and if I die, the only way to go to get back to where I was is down.

It's a long way down, though. This is an empty pocket, but serves as the only screencapworthy thing on the way so far.

Another underground spring. It's almost imperceptible in the screenshot, but the plant over there is glowing softly.

A gargoyle statue.

And a poison dart trap.

That ore is glowing.

I find some topaz on the way to it.

My copper pickaxe isn't enough to break it, though. I'll have to come back with better equipment.

Found some gold, though.

Which I smelt into bars, which in turn cannot be minted into coins.

Falling star right outside.

I've gotten plenty of stone and clay, enough to build another better structure -- or most of one, at least -- out of bricks. I don't know if there's any reason to do that other than "style", but hey, why not?

And that's as far as I got on my first play. I might have gotten further if I didn't drop my axe like some sort of moron, though!

What's next, folks? Other than "more mining". That's a given.

I've picked up quite a few Fallen Stars in my travels thus far -- thirteen in all -- so I can combine ten of them into a Mana Crystal.

I don't have any magic to spend mana on yet, but whaddyagonnado

Back down to where the yellow slimes splash about. I haven't worked out what differently colored slimes are for, since all of them seem to behave about the same and all drop gel and copper coins when defeated. Might be a linear HP/defense growth and that's it.

I drain the lake barring my path downward into another lake, finding a small deposit of amethyst for my trouble.

The screencaps don't pick it up very well, but this plant gives off a soft light.

Onward and downward. I must be making progress, the background music changed.

I break through a wall into what is a very large cavern. You can tell just by how far the little beam of light through the hole goes.

Well, there's a slime that does something unusual. Black slimes interfere with your vision, making light sources less effective for several seconds. That's the status countdown timer in the top left.

You can't swing the sword in anything but an overhead arc. Which makes it difficult to fight enemies downhill from you. Should've brought my spear.

I did find rather a lot of ore on my way down there, though. I craft myself some new equipment before I return. Golden sword and silver pickaxe (which for some reason are more effective than iron despite metallurgical realities), chainmail, and a... well, a bucket worn as a helmet. Don't judge me.

Goldfish are collectible items. You can eat them for an HP restore. The description says "It's smiling, perhaps it would make a nice snack?"

I can't pry this out of the wall even with a new pickaxe. Tough stuff.

This is indeed a large cavern.

Good stuff in the walls, though. Well, rare stuff. Well, stuff I haven't seen much of yet.

Tough monsters, though. Skellingtons make the same sound as a stone wall when you hit them.

Silt, like sand, falls when subjected to gravity. I learned this when some fell on my head and hurt me.

She's a bad mothaSHUT YO MOUTH. But I'm just talkin' 'bout that giant slime that splits into four black slimes when you kill it!

Every time I knock down a wall, there's another giant cavern behind it. Unfortunately at this point I had to go to work, so it'll be tough finding my way back to this exact spot.

Spawned topside, I make myself some metal pants for extra pants-protection.

Oooh, glowy spot.

It's a bit dank in here, but the mushrooms that grow in this sort of area glow. So does the lichen on the walls, which can't be harvested but does go away if you break the block it's attached to. The more you mine this place out, the darker it gets.

Numerous monsters, though.

Returning, I get chased by several skellingtons. None of them have dropped that hook Kyle told me about, though.

You can chop down the giant mushrooms to get lots of... little mushrooms. Weak! I wanted to build a house out of giant glowy mushroom lumber.

Traps! This place is really dangerous.

I harvest the pressure plates for my own foul means, then I build a bridge over to the dart launchers and take those too. I wonder if I can set up antizombie security measures in my fort up topside.

My bridge effectively makes a big cistern across the top of the cavern, so I spend the next hour or so draining lakes into it to mine out the dry lakebeHRRHHRRHRHRAARHRHRAHRRRHGGGH that's cold!

I get the feeling this is going to happen a lot.

Falling Stars gonna fall. I actually saw this one fall out of the sky; they make a squelching sound when they land.

"Can Mine Meteorite"? That sounds promising.

...um. I've not heard of this before. Am I collecting Cthulhu's body parts to reassemble him in R'lyeh so I can murder him again and remove his curse? Is that the game plot?

I was already playing by the time Stush posted his comment, but this was the point I realized you can sell things by dragging them into a shop's inventory. I had enough Copper bars to make those worth selling (Copper being kind of useless now), but like Stush said, an ingot of solid gold is worth a measly twelve silver coins.

Aha! I can mine out this stuff n-- that's not a Meteorite. That's not a Meteorite at all. Suddenly I don't want this very much.

I hope water pumps are a thing I can build in the future. Draining lakes is kind of fun but it gets a bit tedious.

Nice visual effect though.

I've fallen to my death here before, but didn't get a good look around. This stuff is new. It's too hard to mine out, though, even with a gold pickaxe.

Ew. These guys are kind of hard, since they attack by ramming, their aim is better than a Demon Eye, and they have more HP.

A tiny desert, with the requisite saguaro, followed immediately by a purple-tinted biome.

The sky gets noticeably darker as I go over here. Those purple strands in my way are thorn bushes; they can't be harvested but can be destroyed -- which is good, since they hurt.

Hmm. Giant pit of unmineable ore, and more of those nasty flying monsters.

Guess I'll go somewhere else.

Fiery torches are useless underwater, but glowsticks aren't. Which is good, because water is dark.

...a wooden structure with a door?

And walls made of a new material. I'm not entirely sure if it's right that my first impression upon finding a new place is "hey, new stuff. Break it down!"

Two statues and a golden chest. Ooh, shiny.

Double jump? Yes plz

And as usual, the next thing I take is the chest itself.

Zombies cannot open doors, it turns out.

About eight slimes appeared while I was exploring the little structure here. Since attacking downward is such a pain, I chuck a grenade at them.

SKLORTCH

Goodness, that was immensely satisfying.

I found some more of those weird "Inactive Stone Blocks". I wonder what they're for.

OMG YES PLZ

Now I know what all the Fallen Stars are for.

Double jump in action.

One chest had a cloud in a bottle, the other had the magic mirror. I plunk them down beside one another and unload all my loot. With four chests I can be a little organized; I end up with one holding furnishings I haven't used yet, one holds seeds and plants, one holds ores and metals, and one holds weapons I'm not using.

Two fallen stars at once?

I have no reason to need 40 mana at once, since the Magic Mirror isn't something I'll be using so often my magic doesn't have time to recharge between uses, but hey. More magic. Who knows what I'll find next?

The shopkeepers will take 100 coins of a smaller denomination to give one coin of a larger denomination. So 100 coppers -> 1 silver, and 100 silvers -> 1 gold.

You've heard of Gaia's Navel? I think this is Gaia's Cleavage.

Another big lake.

With more of that scuzzy purple stuff on the other side. I turn back and explore some of the caves beneath Gaia's Cleavage.

A blowpipe. I assumed seeds were for planting, but I guess you can huck them at enemies too.

Another underground structu-- oh. No, it's the same structure, approached from the opposite side.

With an overburdened inventory, I magic myself back home.

Angel Statue? I don't have one, but apparently they're either highly sought after or, judging from the last half of his comment, crap.

Anyway, I've finally saved up enough golds to buy that Mining Helmet.

...which does not work as advertised.

...because I had everything equipped into the wrong slot. Apparently "Social" items on the left just determine what your character looks like, and you have to put things in the column on the right for them to actually work. No wonder my armor didn't seem like it was doing much to keep me alive. It wasn't!

This thing is awesome. I still drop torches to mark places I've explored, but don't have to constantly hold one wherever I go.

I immediately find either a highly-sought-after item or a piece of crap.

And an accessory that speeds my innate health regeneration and boosts my damage output a smidge.

This stuff is a little easier to find this deep down.

why hello there

...dood.

I smelt my ore into a bar that pulses with energy. Despite that sounding like a tagline for a processed whey protein snack, I refrain from eating it.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough Demonite to craft the next level of gear, and all of the stuff I can craft is the same as I've seen since I started collecting gold. There's nothing for it, I'm going to have to look something up.

Shopkeepers can't be summoned, to my knowledge. NPCs show up as they feel like depending on things you've accomplished. I didn't screencap it, but getting life extensions summoned a Nurse, who will heal you for money. Why there is pay-to-heal in a game with natural regeneration I cannot say.

Anyway, I only have the one merchant. He sells the mining helmet, the piggy bank, and a bunch of crap I can make myself.

Turns out the Guide can tell you what recipes turn a given item into something else. Like, he can tell me that cobwebs turn into silk, but not what kind of workstation does that.

Going "Hey tell me everything I can do with lumber" gives a huge list, including many items I haven't seen yet, so that's promising. Like, hey, there's a Loom I can build. I guess that's how you turn cobwebs into silk.

...now how do I get a Loom?

The gap in my knowledge was caused for want of a chain. They're useless in Nethack, how good can they be in a different game? Anyway, I craft a few iron chains.

Ooh, ostentatious.

Ever the conscientious lumber collector, I plant several acorns collected from fallen trees. The saplings are hard to tell from the wild undergrowth, but they're there.

As I go to collect more wood for advanced wood craftings, I encounter my first Harpy.

It does not end well.

That was quick. Trees fertilized with blood grow quickly, it seems.

On my way to collect my dropped coinage, I encounter my next two harpies.

That doesn't end well either.

With a chain in place and some restocked lumber, I can craft a Sawmill.

But without a place to put it I have to expand my workshop.

Sitting at the sawmill allows me to craft a loom, and thus silk, and thus beds. No one has to sleep in chairs anymore!

Who am I kidding, no one in this game sleeps.

I don't remember if I screencapped finding this thing, but I have a Forceful Enchanted Boomerang. It flies in whatever direction the mouse pointer is pointing. It goes, it comes back, and deals more damage than my gold broadsword to anything it hits on the way. It also glows in the dark, making it nice to scout out dark caverns.

It's handy for keeping entire mobs at bay.

Another subterranean structure.

It feels kind of weird to find ten gold ingots and go "Eh, not much here", but eh. Not much here.

Risky business, this underwater exploration.

Okay, so throwing it downward tends to hit whatever platform I'm standing on, but if the enemies are in the right spot, the Enchanted Boomerang makes ranged combat quite safe. A little tedious, but safe.

It lets me clear out the mob around this next Crystal Heart, for instance, without ever taking a hit.

Hey, a skellington finally dropped a hook!

Neato.

This doodad flies out wherever the mouse is pointing but can't be mapped to a mouse button. This seems impractical. It works like a Hookshot, yanking me over gaps and up to ceilings.

That doesn't sound good.

Holy christ even the rabbits turn evil during a Blood Moon.

Also mobs get much bigger. Every number represents a zombie.

Fuck it, I'm walling this bad bitch off and waiting until sunrise.

Having survived the Blood Moon (Human NPCs get testy but still do their jobs, and no monsters spawn inside the apartment building or can move through its walls, so everyone was fine), I continue my spelunking.

And find a new monster, a skellington mage who fires blasts of magic clear through walls. His name is Tim. No, really.

Ooh, glowy.

...on account of the magma. I do a little mining and warp back to the surface. I'm not sure what happens if I fall in lava, but I can damn well guess. Not sure what sort of monsters live down here, either.

Turns out beds have a purpose other than just decoration! You can use them to set a respawn point for when you die.

Having reached a logical limit to how far I can burrow downward, I explore the surface a bit more. Which includes this funky cursed sort of place I'd been to before.

There was a desert off to the left before, but I uh

I needed a lot of glass.

The lumber isn't cursed or anything, but trees here no longer generate acorns.

These are Eaters of Souls, but they're basically just giant cockroaches that ram into you. There are a lot of them in these areas, and they come in three sizes.

After some experimentation the only thing I can tell you about this thing is it hurts you if you try to dislodge it from where it's set. Beyond that I have no idea what it is or what it's for.

There's some mineral wealth to be had here, but not much. I still can't dig through the darker blocks.

The landscape here is littered with deep, narrow chasms. Most are dead-ends, but one leads to a cave complex with lots of treasure pots.

New statue.

That must be one of the crystal balls Kyle told me about, the kind that makes meteors fall when you break 'em.

You'd think Demonite would be easier to find in a blighted hellhole, but it's just as rare here as anywhere.

Corrupt Goldfish: stronger than piranha.

At this point I remembered I have bombs, which it turns out are capable of smashing through small areas of the blocks I can't mine through yet. From here on out I'm calling them Ebonstone, because after knocking some loose with explosives and picking them up I learned that's what they are.

Bit tricky to get bombs to go where you want them to. They tend to roll around.

Chill or no, "Godly Musket" sounds promising.

As promised, once you have a firearm, an Arms Dealer shows up to sell you ammunition. I'll set one of the apartments to his once I get back.

Seems legit.

I assume they're for crafting some fuckoff powerful sidearm.

...hmm.

Goblin Army? That sounds vaguely unpleasant.

Sho nuff.

THEY ARE IN MY AWESOME CASTLE IT ISN'T EVEN DONE YET  :rage:

Goblins come in several flavors. Warriors are big and tough and big and tough and big and tough. Scouts are smaller and more agile. Archers do what you'd expect them to do. Wizards teleport around and zap you with magic.

And there are an awful goddamned lot of them in an army.

This was actually kind of awesome, I was pummeled down to low HP and threw a grenade into a mob. I died in the explosion but took several with me.

This is getting tedious.

Firing my new musket downward is kind of useful, but it seems semirandom whether any given wooden platform stops the bullet.

Goblins drop a lot of these when they die.

Between throwing them quickly and them hitting multiple times before they disappear, they're remarkably effective at chewing through the mobs of goblins that drop them.

FINALLY

DID YOU NOT GET THE MEMO

I clean up the tombstones in the area, including a couple from very early on that were near my castle anyway.

And build my own mausoleum.

That hill near the starting point? I knocked it down.

In doing so I buried a rabbit, but it's his own fault for not getting out of the hole.

I then knocked out the bottom layers of the apartment building I was using as a workshop until I moved all my tools to my new castle. The NPCs should be pretty safe now.

I'm digging around the corrupted areas now, to see if they make the surrounding area any richer but mostly to see if I can find some more Demonite. Shit's rare.

New thing.

I've taken to building little nooks to hold my explosives in. They rarely bounce out.

Turns out explosions can also break crystal balls.

You can attack while grappling to a ceiling. This is useful to know.

Oooh, that sounds interesting. Let's go look for it!

It seems reasonable that a meteorite would crash about ground-level, leaving a crater or something immediately noticeable. But I don't know where on the map it is, so I head off in a randomly-chosen direction (in this case, left) from my spawn point. I make it to the other corrupted area without finding anything amiss.

Find some new stuff in that corruption, though. New plants, at least, they're growing out of regular mud.

There's more new stuff on the other side of the corrupted area.

FUCK

Man why you gotta go and do a thing

ZOMBIES CAN OPEN DOORS NOW

I guess it's a Blood Moon thing.

Except, wait.

They can't open the one door, or they would have. Is it blocked by having a chair near it? I've had some trouble getting that door to work myself... I guess it can't open inward with a door there, and zombies never step back to let it swing outward.

This hilltop, just to the left of Gaia's Cleavage, is the only place Harpies spawn. But they do that constantly here, swooping down from above and shooting feathers. I wonder what's up there?

Yes, I know I'm supposed to be looking for that meteorite crater. I have the attention span of a puppy sometimes.

I chop down some trees to make room, then start building a narrow structure to keep from getting flayed by Harpy feathers as I build. They can fire straight downward through the wooden platforms, but aren't smart enough to do that intentionally.

Gravity is noticeably weaker up here.

I wonder if I'm high enough up to keep Harpies from respawning? I cut a few firing holes in my ladder and take potshots at them with my musket as they wing by.

Short answer: No, they still respawn constantly.

I reach the top of the map, and have found dick all.

But the way I see it I can build a little hallway up here and that'll help me bypass ground hazards. Seems legit, right?

So I spend several minutes doing that, get knocked off by a Harpy, fall to the ground and die. I'd put so much effort into traveling such a small distance that eh, fuck it. Back to looking for that meteorite.

Right.

Aw, it's that little shelter I built to keep zombies from landing on my head during the Blood Moon.

The jungle -- for that is what this is -- has a lot of standing water and deep pools. Crossing them is a snap with the grappling hook, though.

H... Hinawa...

Immediately beside the rainforest is a desert. Um.

I'm just gonna roll with it.

Night falls, I decide I don't want to spend hours in the wide open area fighting off monsters, and shelter myself while I go unload the dishwasher and make a sandwich.

This would be a lot more tempting if I couldn't grab items through narrow walls.

Goblins spawn naturally out here, army not included.

Either that or this guy got lost on the way to my castle.

Anyway, this body of water is not noticeably drained when I fill the trench immediately to my right. It's really big.

But rather than build over it, I dig under it. Why not? There's more stuff down here.

Yep, still wet.

I reach the edge of the map on this side, too.

Turns out the meteor fell just on the far side of the corrupted area I was exploring when it hit. I could have gone straight up and run right into it, I bet.

The golden pickaxe explicitly states it is capable of mining meteorite ore. I do so.

And in doing so attract the attention of Meteor Heads. They float at a medium speed through walls and obstacles to ram you, doing a lot of damage and possibly setting you on fire. They're low on HP, though; sometimes two sword swipes will kill one.

Nonetheless, I die several times.

But each time I do I respawn with a little more meteorite ore in my pockets, which I smelt into Meteorite Bars in my furnace.

"Hey Kyle I have some thunderbolt iron what can I do with it?"
"You can make a fuckin' lightsaber, dude."
"Fuck yeah."

Either I mine enough of the Meteorite away that the Meteor Heads stop spawning entirely, or they gave up and went home. Either way, I got every chunk of ore I could find, resulting in 59 Meteorite Bars. Not a bad haul.

Some experimentation shows that the Hamaxe is a combination hammer and axe, allowing me to chop trees and destroy background elements better than my gold axe and gold hammer could respectively. Unfortunately I thought this was higher level of pickaxe, and it's not -- it's useless on dirt.

I want a red one, so it goes faster.

vwoom vwoom vwoom vwoom vwoom

I head back to the corrupted area, hoping to break enough crystal balls that another meteorite drops, so I can forge the armor set that's made of that stuff.

Two orbs right next to each other. I'll get you yet, Eater of Me.

I build a quick exit up to the wider cavern above, so I have a place to fight the bastard.

...but he doesn't appear.

There's that, though.

He doesn't appear again. So apparently its orb -> chill, orb -> screams, orb -> GIANT WORM MONSTER

...speaking of, "Eater of Worlds" is my new favorite penis nickname.

I remember that hey, potions might help in this fight. So I go back to review my gear and grab some. The Ball o' Hurt is a flail, the first one I've found.

The Vilethorn is a spear.

EPIC FLAIL

The spear isn't much to speak of, but the magic throrns that sprout from it look pretty effective. It takes mana to attack with it, though.

Arena: constructed. Potions and glowsticks: set. Ironskin potion for extra defense, Thorns potion for revenge damage when he hits me: check.

BRING IT

WHADDYA GOT WHADDYA GOT

The first thing he got is to pin me up against a wall and hit me several times, but I give back plenty of numbers too.

He splits into smaller versions of himself several times during the fight. Not entirely sure I like the nickname anymore.

SUCK IT

Dude drops tons of Demonite Ore and Shadow Scales.

I wonder if there's a failsafe in place to keep meteorites from landing on NPC apartments or your own spawn point. Because uh

hmm

It seems prudent, when faced with a new material to forge things out of, to forge the pickaxe first. That my sword and hammer/axe are both higher-tier materials already, it's this or armor.

Thinking about the game sequence up o this point: the best stuf you can make out of naturally-ocurring ore is golden. Demonite and Meteorite are better, but take some doing. Both require a golden pickaxe to collect, so you're expected to be at least that far.

Demonite equipment also requires Shadow Scales, which thus far only drop from the Eater of Worlds. So finding the tiny veins of the stuff is a nigh-fruitless endeavor anyway.

To make Meteorite appear, you break crystal orbs. To spawn the Eater, you break crystal orbs in sets of three.

Crystal orbs are buried in Ebonstone, which a golden pickaxe can't break. You have to explode your way in.

So an optional hint leads you to look for the orbs, at which point optional items -- including optional crafting upgrades if you want to make things easier-- are needed to break them, spawning a boss no one warns you about. You're not compelled to do any of that, I suppose, but the upgrades from Demonite and Meteorite are substantial and, I assume, expected by the difficulty curve.

That's sandbox for ya. I hope my random dicking around continues to be this productive.

Terraria is definitely the product of someone who looked at Minecraft and wanted a quick cash in without understanding a lot of the why and how of guiding a player, yes.

I've been trying to balance not spoiling a blind LP with "Making sure you don't fuck yourself" to avoid horrible unrecoverable accidents.
Speaking of which, here's one: If you come across a guy who tells you to come back at night, do so only when you're ready to take on a large army.
If you come across a guy talking about you breaking a curse, same deal.

Under no circumstances should you explore the rather hard-to-miss area the guy is near, because the game does not warn you at all that it will instakill you if you explore it without taking care of the guy's problem.

It instakills you in a way that makes recovering what you drop almost impossible.
Lyrai, the only thing that I lose when I die is half my money, and upon learning that I now stash everything in a piggybank before I go exploring. Dropping half the money I've accrued on my way to somewhere is no major drawback, so unless there's a point of no return where I'll be stuck and unable to proceed or backtrack, don't you fret about me none.

For most of Minecraft's popular lifespan its method of guiding the player was "go look at that wiki over there".

I got me a piggy bank. Apparently it can hold any item like any other container, but I just keep my money in it anyway.

I found the other meteorite. One of the others, anyway. It's in the desert far to the left, past the corruption and the jungle.

It takes a couple days and nights of fighting off Meteor Heads and zombies, but I harvest the entire meteorite without dying.

I equip the magic mirror and jump in the edge-of-map sea to see how far I can get before I have to teleport out to avoid drowning. There's a gold chest down here!

While PEW PEW PEW seems awfully tempting I'll go for the new armor. I realized after forging it that the Meteor Armor has the same defensive value as the silver chainmail and greaves I was wearing. I'm paying attention! :V

With my new pickaxe, I can dig through Ebonstone.

My new flail makes short work of this particular situation.

That's the stuff.

...actually that's pretty lame.

Touching freshly-fallen meteorite hurts, so you have to get creative with where you stand to mine it. Why it's okay in your pockets but not under your shoes is not adequately explained.

Oh hell.

Instead of getting slaughtered by Skeletron again I grapple my way over the structure instead.

Oh hey, I found that other Meteorite.

Dum de dum.

Turns out this one almost fell into the ocean on the other side of the map.

And then, just for shits and giggles, I wall off the ocean.

Haven't seen a dike that big since that awkward tour of that BDSM club.

WHY WOULD I DO THAT

I forge a laser pistol instead. PEW PEW PEW

With the Meteorite Armor set assembled, the laser doesn't consume mana, giving me unlimited ammo. The Megashark is faster and has better DPS, but limited ammo.

6. Thunderbolt iron mined out of a meteorite
7. RANDOM JUNGLE DETRITUS

Here's my crib as it is.

My bedroom/spawn point. It's not really mine since there's no way to make it that way, but it's where I spawn when I die. Fancy furniture and a private bathroom.

My workshop. Chests are arranged by what's in them, and there's a row of workstations on the top level.

The apartment area. There are a couple extra, because apparently the Dryad didn't spawn until there was an apartment for her (which was mine, but whatevs).

Some extra space. This was the bridge to the previous apartment building, so I built it into rooms and stuff. There's a dining room and kitchen on top, and nothing in particular below.

My original intention was to have the conservatory lit by Blinkroots at night, but apparently those don't glow naturally if they're cultivated in clay pots. Might need to hang a chandelier or something in here, that one table candle isn't enough.

There's only the one door to the outside, and the table is set to bar it in the event of a Blood Moon roof zombie invasion.

One tower, with a gargoyle statue.

I dug a well, but haven't found a water source high enough to drain into it to fill it up.

My crypt.

It's not much! There's certainly a lot more swagification that can be done. I think tonight when I get home I'll open the game up to multiplayer so you guys who keep asking me to come play can come play. I don't want help with anything, free materials, money, equipment, or bosses beaten -- just come play Legos with me.

Hey, you can take the piggy bank with you even when there's stuff inside. You can't do that with chests. I might have to get another one to carry extra stuff in, since "inventory full" is what often drives me back to base when I'm exploring.

I've also collected enough vines to make an Ivy Whip, which doesn't have an attack power so I assume it's an upgrade for the grappling hook (since it requires your grappling hook to make).

I am correct in my assumption. It's a longer grappling chain.

And is useful for all the pits and chasms in the jungle undercaves, since they tend to swarm with slimes and man-eating plants. Hooking onto the ceiling and dropping explosives is pretty handy.

Goblin Army used to be the only way to get Rocket Boots. So you'd just keep summoning them over and over after getting a random one, hoping for a drop.

Lyrai, Guildenstern, and Doom all came over to my castle to play Legos.

I was constructing a large tower to support a long, flat hallway in the sky. I figure I can build a bridge from one side of the map to the other, schlep building materials to landmarks in other parts of the world, and build up to the bridge from there. Then when I need to get somewhere, I climb to my airtunnel and use my new Hermes/Spectre boots to get where I need to be quickly without having to run over the uneven ground.

Meanwhile Doom has dug out the bottom of my dry well.

Doom isn't telling us what he's building, but he clearly has something complicated in mind.

500 feet up seems about right. Shouldn't be anything up here to get in my way.

I am wrong in this assumption.

This floating island -- for that is what it is! -- has a little structure on it with a locked chest.

Unable to open the chest, I steal the structure instead.

There's tons of silver ore in the island, too.

While I mine out the ores, Lyrai continues drilling through the underside for my bridge.

Guildenstern completes his construction project.

Since I'm acting as the game server, my game is lagging terribly. That doesn't affect building much, but fighting monsters is a pain when they're teleporting around. Lyrai covers me while I continue building -- and run into another island.

Same deal.

Doom is draining a lake from halfway across the map into this reservoir. I'm concerned about the effects this will have on his construction.

Apparently plants will only grow out of ground that already has grass coverage, not bare dirt. So once GuildenFUCK has grown over, I decorate it with sunflowers, trees, and lampposts.

Doom also dumps a bit of water into the shaft I'd dug from my castle underside most of the way into the magma-y bits of the planet's crust. Now I don't have to carefully double-jump or grapple to negate the fall.

Then he tells me to try dumping water into magma, so I drain his safety cushion into a nearby lava pool. Oh well.

This creates obsidian to mine.

Guildenstern built a little roof over the well, and team effort filled it.

This will be a nice little garden once I plant some flowers and the trees grow. Doom crafted the platforms and planters, Guild did the background brickwork.

It's a fishin' shack.

Fishing is not a thing you can do in this game, but eventually goldfish spawn in the lake to complete the image.

The tiny fish statue was my addition.

Two kegs. You can't drink all day unless you start in the mornin'.

The well is connected to the new reservoir, whynot

The entrance to my bridge.

The skybridge drops me quite a ways across the map. Right by the entrance to the structure Skeletron appears on, really.

Lyrai told me not to go in, but I told her not to tell me not to go in, so I'm going in.

There are books. I take them.

There's a lightswitch to ceiling fixtures. Gotta get me some of those.

There are obvious traps.

Hey Skeletron, nice dungeon. I think I'll take it.

Holding the switch in active inventory lets me see the wire connecting it to the lamp, but there's no way for me to harvest the wire itself.

I clear out some roof and install a platform so I have a nice wide-open area to fight Skeletron in.

So if I beat Skellingtron I won't get murdered by the Dungeon Guardian? Is that what you mean?

Wait, who?

Actually this is the easiest fight so far. King Slime is too dumb to intentionally drop through that wooden platform, so I can run around and shoot him without much fear of reprisal from him or the slimes he spawns. Sometimes he'll run into one of the solid platforms I hung a torch from and drop through, but that's not common enough to be a problem.

And for no readily explained reason King Slime had a ninja trapped inside.

I realized an important thing last time: Skeletron's hands have their own HP totals.

Turns out that without them, he's a chump.

A falling star whizzed right by him during the fight. These things obliterate anything they touch as they land, so it would have been pretty great if it'd fallen on Skeletron for the KO.

Swinging traps, though.

The clothier -- previously the guy under Skeletron's curse -- finds an apartment just as I discover another bound-and-gagged dungeon hostage.

She's a mechanic. She sells wire and trap goods, the latter of which I've looted plenty of already.

Perhaps she should have escaped the dungeon instead of just wandering back and forth in skeleton-infested hallways. I guess she was right, and it was just a matter of time.

Enemies here drop golden keys, which can be used to unlock golden chests.

The merchant sells a safe now.

I head up to the floating islands to use those golden keys.

I find a rubber balloon, covered in spikes because of the randomly-generated attribute. Not sure how that works, really.

The other holds a lucky horseshoe, which negates fall damage.

I've seen both of these items before, asking Kyle about what stuff I can build. So I know I need an Obsidian Skull out of that obsidian Doom showed me how to make.

The Obsidian Skull and Lucky Horseshoe combine into the Obsidian Horseshoe, which does the job of both items in one equip slot: I'm now immune to fire blocks (like Meteorite, which hurts if you touch it) and fall damage. Likewise, the Cloud in a Bottle and Red Balloon combine into the Cloud in a Balloon, which does the job of both items in one equip slot: individual jumps are higher, and I can still double-jump.

So now I can jump high, double jump, rocket into the air, and not have to worry about the long drop on the way down.

I can just run off the end of my sky bridge now.

The bones dropped by dungeon skeletons can be crafted into piano keys, so I build a concert hall. Looks a little bare now, but I'm working on it. I thinks some potted plants would look nice, don't you?

I just build a small network of minimal-viable-housing and some treasure/crafting floors, atop a drop shaft into
the very mouth of hell itself
.

I made the stuff in the box once for fun, then cannibalized it for parts and doing my own thing.

During this multiplayer session I... tear down my entire castle.

Meanwhile, Zara builds a treehouse.

As soon as everything comes down, the Blood Moon rises. All my former tenants, being too dumb to seek shelter, are rent asunder by zombies.

I go to harvest some more blue bricks, but am interrupted. Apparently King Slime digs this place and hates for me to excavate it.

This time he dropped ninja pants.

I buy a ruler to help block placement in rebuilding my castle. Presumably it would be more useful not at night, when I could see.

Another Blood Moon. I hide in my well and let the dart traps take care of it.

Zara planted a garden on the top of my new apartments, but did it with mud and jungle grass -- enough to make the game consider this a jungle biome. Doom informs me that if the music changes, the monsters spawned will change, too -- resulting in Man-Eaters lunging through the walls and killing my NPCs again.

Sorry, Zara.

Anyway, it took hours and hours, and most of you in the multiplayer with me tonight have seen it already, but for those of you who haven't... behold!

The far east edge tapers to a point. The blue bricks are salvaged from the dungeon, since actually crafting all of this stuff would just be tedious.

Apartments all in a row.

My room is still the nicest, since I'm the one building all this crap. Silver brick walls, yo.

New conservatory, note the arch of the greenhouse dome and new natural grass floors. Blinkroots are ugly, so I just let natural flowers grow and lit them with candles and chain lamps.

Below is the library, because the dungeon has a lot of books in it.

My concert hall. Still too bare for my tastes. It's a shame this game doesn't have a "curtains" item.

I have no idea what to do with this room yet. I'm just using the manequins here as storage so I don't have to use so many chests.

Left to right: taproom, kitchen, dining hall. Below is a storage closet.

The new workshop area, with storage up above. These two things are the main reason I come back inside, so they're always near the entrance.

The left entranceway. There's probably something fancy I can do with it, but now it's not even lighted.

The right entranceway. Dropping down from here leads to the shaft with the previous mausoleum.

The well, with new Goblin Army/Blood Moon countermeasures in place. On top are the controls for the door -- since I've never seen monsters use switches, I wired active/inactive blocks to this switch. Flip it and the active blocks become inactive, allowing you to enter...

Then flip this wallswitch to shut the monster-proof door.

Gonna call it a night without building off this wing of the castle yet. There's a closet with a chest for unused home decor items above, and a closet for wiring and tinkering gear below.

There's a long shaft upwards to reach the skybridge.

And finally, a room I have plans for but not the materials.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

THE BRONTOCASTLEUS

Doom and I did a dungeon raid together, which turned out to be quite profitable. One such item was this shadow key, which according to Doom means I can now "really explore hell". I still haven't found any shadow chests or doors or anything this would unlock yet.

But I do have enough Hellstone for this lovely pickaxe forged from flames and magma.

It really chews through bricks and ores, although oddly dirt with grass on it takes several hits.

That is not what I want to see when I'm in hell.

The trick to mining Hellstone is to get above it and give the magma it leaves behind somewhere to go.

With this in mind I also forge myself a sword of flame.

I find a structure made of hellstone brick rather than the obsidian brick typical of the towers in hell, but there doesn't seem to be anything unusual inside. Just its construction materials.

And with that, I'm at maximum HP.

Sometimes getting hellstone is easy, such as when it's all within reach with a wall to keep the lava out.

Yet the item itself, which does little to prevent drowning, is practically useless.

So I've got the Light's Bane from boss corpses, the Blade of Grass from the jungle, the Muramasa from the dungeon, and the Fiery Greatsword from hell.

BY YOUR POWERS COMBINED, I AM

It seems so long ago.

I forge the last piece of my Shadow gear. Now I have a couple of complete sets, including the Jungle gear I wrought around the time I was so laden with spores and vines from my trip to gather stuff for the Blade of Grass.

Those orbs I broke to summon the Eater again made a meteorite fall. On my skybridge.

I suspect this is Zara's work.

I spend some idle time bashing away at the corruption. It takes a long time to break it all up without using explosives, so I use a lot of explosives. Don't worry guys, I'll lick that taint yet.

The Brain is nowhere to be found, but killing one of these tiny pink slimes is worth a lot of money, up to a gold piece or two per. They're rare, but dropping gold is dropping a lot of money.

The floor here is lava. No, really.

The way through is inspired by Mission Impossible.

I discovered by accident what had already been spoilered for me in multiplayer.

I was traipsing around hell looking for shadow chests when I happened upon a Voodoo Demon. These guys fly around and shoot you like regular demons, and drop the Guide Voodoo Dolls I've picked up a couple of already.

I killed the demon. He dropped a voodoo doll.

Into the lava.

I got the message that Kyle had been killed, as you'd expect from having a working voodoo doll burned up to nothing.

I also got the message that the Wall of Flesh had awoken. Realizing I didn't have my screencap software running, I just logged out instead.

So eventually I'll fight the Wall of Flesh, having legit discovered that a destroyed Voodoo Doll summons him.

The new guide is named Wyatt, but if I'm going to fight the Wall at any point, he won't be after that.

Does it feel like the LP is dragging a bit because we're all just dicking around and not making any actual progress? You're right!

We're still just dicking around though.

For instance, I'm running a very long wire up the length of my straight-to-hell drop shaft.

...so I can pump lava directly out of the underworld and into the well I drained for this purpose.

So all you guys who wanted some magma or obsidian for your projects, here's a readily available source.

The pier from the fishing shack leads up to the bottom, just reach through the wall and grab yourself a bucketful. Because fuck physics.

This dapper gentleman is The Groom, and he drops that top hat upon his demise.

Hell is giant lakes of deadly bubbling magma and other people.

And a bed-and-breakfast. Setting a spawn point in hell might save a lot of time, but climbing back out would be time-consuming.

But Frito Bandito kills another voodoo demon while building his mot-Hell, dropping another voodoo doll into the lava while I'm talking to the guide.

But this time I have my screencap software running.

AAAAAAUUUGH

Some guys mowed down the grass in one of the corrupted areas.

I've explored pretty far in hell from either direction from the starting point, which I'm pretty sure is the middle of the map or close to it. (Remember, I dug the first shaft downward from my original starting point before I could craft a bed to move where I spawn.) So I head to the oceans on either side of the map to start from the edges and work my way in.

Exploring hell when monsters teleport around due to server lag is hard.

But I get enough Hellstone to craft a full set of molten armor. Despite being more or less made of lava, it doesn't protect me from falling into the stuff -- just increases my melee damage.

I am spoiled that the Wall of Flesh is a major event, and about as close as the game gets to a linear progression. So my next goal is to prepare hell to defeat the Wall, then defeat the Wall.

Well, yes. I did take time out of my busy boss-slaying to build a giant castle shaped like a dinosaur. So I guess the LP is dragging not because I'm not making progress, it's that I need bigger and better ideas of crazy things to assemble out of virtual Legos.

Owners of the Eat 'N' Beat do not recommend any patron actually attempt to spend the night, due to firey death demons teleporting through the walls and laying waste at irregular intervals.

We do, however, have a fully stocked alehouse.

The closest thing I have to an overall goal is destroying the Corruption.

Since it's something that can spread, I start on the outside and work my way in. I feel like I'm making pretty good progress when I see what I've done, but then I walk around to the other side of the biome and get overwhelmed by how much is left. I need a lot of dynamite, I think.

I use the Ebonstone blocks to continue a bridge across the lava pools of hell, in preparation for the Wall of Flesh fight. What am I going to do, corrupt hell?

Turns out yes, yes I am. Corruption-area enemies start spawning in hell after a while of placing Ebonstone. Since they're a lot less annoying than fire bats and demons and lava slimes and Jesus Christo the bone worms I don't consider this a bad thing.

My hell bridge has gone about as far as my sky bridge -- to the dungeon. I burrow my way into the bottommost dungeon depths, because why not?

I'm not sure what this one tree was doing in the area, but it was dug under and around until it became a landmark. Doom freed it of the cliff edge it was growing on and made it centerpiece of the garden out behind his officer's room.

I realized after the tours that I didn't take a shot of the other half of Thesaurus. There's a nice windowed reading room up top, and a private reading room far right.

I couldn't think of anything to put in the front leg, so I filled it in, but that made it invisibly dark. So now it's lit.

Talking to the Goblin Tinker made a goblin army show up. Suspicious!

Someone looted my well defense mechanism for parts, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't me. My timer is gone, forcing me to flip the dart trigger manually, count to ten for the cooldown, and flip it again. This is even more tedious than fighting manually so eventually I just sword the goblins until the give up.

I later finish half my skybridge, having reached the rightmost edge of the map.

Now to do... the other half...  :nyoro~n:

"It is an odd game that has you go 'Meh, gold', followed immediately by 'Ooh, cobwebs'."

The screencap of that didn't catch all three lines.

The decoration of my throne room has begun in earnest.

Building a giant detour in the skybridge rather defeats the purpose of having the skybridge in the first place (namely, a big flat area where the Hermes Boots can get up to speed), but it's either that or demand Doom tear down his boss arena and move it someplace else.

I spent a staggering amount of cash trying to get the Starfury to have a not-sucky prefix. It's still terrible. I mean, the idea's sound: swing the sword, stars fall from the heavens to smite your foes. But you spend most of the game underground, where heavenly anything can't reach. And the damage is already outclassed by plenty of other things I have.

The good thing about bosses you summon is that you can prepare the way beforehand. Some spiky balls on the floor may or may not accomplish anything.

The pwnhammer is a free hammer upgrade (in the sense that it's better at being a hammer. The prefix "Shameful" is a lot less good than the prefix "Dangerous" as is on my Meteoric Hamaxe, and being a hammer and not a hamaxe, I can't use it to fell trees).

The Ranger Emblem is an accessory that gives me +15% damage on ranged attacks. I can only assume the Wall of Flesh can also drop things that give bonuses to melee and magic.

I am also assuming I can toss another voodoo doll into the lava to summon him again, since Suspicious Looking Eyes to summon the Eye of Cthulhu again aren't hard to find.

That doesn't sound good.

Shameful is reforged into Small is reforged into Sluggish, and then I run out of money to reforge further. But it can still smash up demon altars.

Hey, there's some cobalt ore hanging right there. I'm certain that wasn't there before, so apparently being blessed with an ore means some other stuff is replaced by it.

This enemy lagged out and vanished before I got a good sense of what it was or what it could do. I'm lucky I got the screencap of it, really.

The next altar makes mythril, and the one after, adamantite.

Then back to cobalt. Either it's random chance, or there's a cycle of three to go through. (Since the next two altars also spawned mythril and adamantite, I assume it's a cycle.)

Monsters are now dropping the Souls I'm told by the Guide I'll need to make some lategame equipment.

Defeating the Wall of Flesh spread the super-bright-happy biome, and made the corruption a lot more prevalent. Guess I'm glad I didn't bother wiping out everything in that one corrupted area before, I'd be pissed if I spent that much time on nothing.

Anyway, Doom can tear down specimen research, since the corruption is all around dragonfort now.

New enemies all around, too. This jovial-looking fellow is a Toxic Slime. Not surprisingly, he poisons you. It seems most of the new enemies cause status effects when they strike; there's a skeleton who busts down your defense and a slime or bat or something that can confuse you so you walk in the wrong direction.

These guys don't have a status effect, they just teleport around and dash into you for a tackle.

And this one just stabs you.

Turns out there are three new ores, but you need a pickaxe of the first to get the second and a pick of the second to get the third.

There are also crystals in underground Super Happy Land.

Just like Ebonstone in corruption, there's Pearlstone (and Pearlsand, which is new) in the new places.

Smelting cobalt is refreshingly straightforward. The ore itself seems a step down in difficulty from Hellstone, which left lava behind when mined and required Obsidian -- itself not found naturally and no small task to make -- to smelt into ingots.

Earlier when I said I'd need a new pickaxe? I was wrong. THIS IS A DRILL.

Checking in Terrafirma reveals there's no shortage of pearl or ebon anywhere. There's a big V shape of the two of them crisscrossing the world now. And where they meet, corruption wins out.

Dragonfort happens to be on top of the left side of the V, the left side being made of corruption.

The new biomes even stretch into the air.

FALCOR NO

This guy is a Wyvern, and between his looping and spinning flight pattern and his FOUR THOUSAND HIT POINTS I have no idea what he drops because I've yet to kill one.

Anyway, the drill is nice. I can just sort of wave my mouse at stone walls and they vanish.

The drill and pwnhammer together cannot overcome a simple wooden wall.

But I can damned well drill out mythril ore.

The Guide has new hints now.

Also:
- Combining lenses at a Demon Altar lets you summon a powerful creature -- at night. (All of the superboss-summoning items he's told me about are forged at a Demon Altar, and one of them requires lenses.)
- Demon altars are in the corruption, and are needed to forge some items. (Duh.)
- Smash demon altars and something good will happen.
- Souls can be gathered by killing monsters in corrupted or superhappy areas. Monsters in the corruption now drop Souls of Night, while the other area makes monsters drop Souls of Light. I've had skellingtons drop Souls of Light, so apparently the monster doesn't matter so much as where you are.

He also tells me that the first thing I'll need to make with all this mythril is a new anvil.

But once I do I can upgrade my drill to get Adamantite.

I was digging out some more Mythril Ore because I crafted my anvil, and then made a chainsaw rather than a drill like some sort of moron. Chainsaws are the next step up from axes, allowing you to chop wood quickly.

Anyway, I was digging out some ore when this crystal appeared right behind me. They grow just like plants do.

I eventually get enough Mythril to upgrade my armor up from the Cobalt I was wearing. Cobalt and Mythril both have chainmail and greaves, like everything else, but have three pieces of headgear each. Helmets boost defense a lot and give melee bonuses, masks have middling defense and give ranged weapon bonuses, and hoods and hats give little defense and magic bonuses. Here I am in my Mythril set with a mythril hood, which gives +60 maximum mana and completes a set that reduces the mana cost of items by about a fifth. I also have a mythril helmet that gives me a different, melee-based set bonus when it's worn instead of the hood.

Anyway, I summoned the Eye of Cthulhu to test out my new equipment, and defeated it handily.

Still can't beat Falcor, though.

I think I get it.

According to the recipes the Guide has told me about, there are three bosses summoned by items I can craft. A Mechanical Skull summons Skeletron Prime, a Mechanical Eye summons The Twins, and a something something worm summons The Destroyer.

He also tells me there are a bunch of Souls I need for the endgame gear. Soul of Light and Soul of Night are dropped by enemies in corrupted and superhappy areas, fine. There's also Soul of Fright, Soul of Sight, and Soul of Might, which some basic association leads me to believe are dropped by Skellingtron Prime, The Twins, and the Destroyer, respectively. Boss grinding? Oh my.

There's also a Soul of Flight. Wyverns, I think, since they're do damned hard to kill they might as well be a sub-boss.

The Goblin Army attacks again. I stand on my well firing a shotgun and shouting GIT OFF MAH PROPERTEH like any normal person.

The Goblin Army brought... presents? Apparently the ingame Christmas events that run off the system clock start on the fifteenth of December or so.

Most presents are candy cane blocks, but one is a Snow Globe to summon a thing called the "Frost Legion".

Either Demon Eyes got a lot bigger or hardmode has a new thing. (It's a Wandering Eye, and like the Eye of Cthulhu, once it gets down to half HP it sheds its pupil for a fanged mouth and gets more aggressive.)

Corrupted areas now spawn Corruptors, who spread corruption wherever their projectile attacks land. Corruption corruption corrupt corrupting corruption.

And while I forget this guy's name, he certainly looks creepy.

The ol' hellforge just isn't gonna cut it.

Helmets are more effective at protecting you than armor (Adamantite Helmet is +8 defense over Mythril Helmet and like +20 over Mythril Hood, while Adamantite Chainmail is only +1 over Mythril Chainmail), so that's my first investment. It'd be an Adamantite Drill, but as far as I can tell Adamantite is the last material available. Inasfar as there is "game", this is endgame.

Anyway, I also expand the safehouse a bit. Now the timer is activated directly (turns out you can do that) to fire the darts, while the switch operates a lava trapdoor.

I'm expecting something Goblin Army-ish, so safehouse.

Santa sells candy cane blocks, decorative lights, and a set of clothes.

The Licensed Sturgeon is very near the corruption, and the corruption seems to be spreading a lot faster now. I'm trying to take measures to assure the biome under the Brontocastleus doesn't turn corrupt.

As far as I can tell, corruption can't pierce manmade blocks. I wall off the entire chunk of land Brontocastleus hovers over.

I also run into the first mimic I'm able to kill myself. I've had a couple eat me, and one died in lava so I didn't get whatever it dropped, so this is a new thing.

The mimic dropped a Double Hook, which is longer than the Ivy Whip, but I can only stick to one thing at a time. I think the three-point suspension with Ivy Whip is preferable, really.

Clowns are right bastards. Those smiley-face bombs act as, well, the same sort of bomb I can throw at things. This guy chews some holes in my pavement before I can kill him.

He also threw a bunch of bombs into and around the well for some damned reason.

Apparently wraiths are confined to a specific distance from a solid block, rather than being able to fly anywhere. And in a Blood Moon, that's a good thing.

Guildenstern's giant FUCK makes a good zombie/possessed armor trap. Maybe I'll fill it with lava.

Oh my! Unicorns aren't so much a symbol of unspoiled wild purity in this game so much as they're a giant pissed-off horse with a point at the end. I need the Unicorn Horns they drop, though.

Hey, I heard about you. The Guide didn't tell me you were captive or anything though.

He sells things.

I dug out a bit more of the well while rebuilding it from the Clown attack. Now I can run around beneath it, safe as you please, to collect the items dropped into the lava by the guys running around in it. It works pretty well -- lava is an environmental hazard so enemies ignore that it's there, but the dart traps pull aggro from monsters. Several times I've seen a monster realize it can't scale the wall of dart traps and turn to leave, only to take a dart to the head, turn around, and try again.

Granted, doing that in lava is about as safe as you'd think.

Werewolves don't seem to have anything special about them except that they only spawn on certain nights, when the ingame moon is full. They also tend to drop silver coins more than anything else. Don't ask me, man, 'cause I dunno.

I use another snow globe and give the Frost Legion another whirl. They don't seem to do anything special when you defeat them, or drop anything particularly useful -- just a bunch of presents and Snow Blocks. Oh well.

An aside:
There are a lot of new enemies in Hardmode, and not a lot more to do. There are three new ores from breaking demon altars, and a new spreading biome with Pearlstone and Pearlsand. The first three make iteratively improved weapons and armor: one each of sword, spear, repeating crossbow, helmet, hat, mask, chainmail, and greaves -- and not much else. Pearlstone and Pearlsand can be used to make bricks -- which I assume spread the Hallow biome -- and nothing else.

And while you look for those limited rewards you're getting swarmed by chaos elementals and wraiths, the corruption and hallow are eating your entire world, and you still have to grind out boss-summoning equipment to get the top-tier gear.

Hardmode isn't very fun.

I didn't get any screencaps from this morning's dicking around! Hooray!

Points of note:

- Made an Adamantite Headgear, which is +80 maximum mana and cuts my mana use by a few percent when I wear it with the other Adamantite gear.
- Get mauled down to single-digit HP, use magic mirror to teleport back to base. Suddenly WYVERN OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE flies through the walls and kills me in my own bedroom.
- Dig a tunnel. Try to brick it off to keep the Hallow/Corruption from spreading too much.
- Beat Wall of Flesh twice. First time he drops a Laser Cannon (an upgraded Space Gun that does magic, not ranged, damage), second time a Warrior Emblem (+15% melee damage).
- Beat a Shadow Chest mimic while in hell, get a Star Cloak. When I'm hurt, stars drop from above to damage nearby foes. It was actually a big help in the second Wall fight, since Hell is pretty wide open and there's room for stars to fall -- and with the eyes, the mouth, the hungry tendrils, the maggotsnakes he fires out when he's low on health, and the normal hell monster spawns, there are plenty of targets to hit. This looked like the same thing the first mimic dropped, the thing that fell into the lava so I couldn't get it.

...Santa? What are you doing in my bathroom?

As fast as the corruption spreads everywhere else, I'm surprised it hasn't reclaimed all the sod around the place it spawned at the beginning of the game.

A mimic dropped a compass, which combines with a gold watch and my depth meter to make a GPS. The GPS gives you your depth like the meter, your lateral location like the compass, and tells time like the watch. And this one is angry, which is odd -- usually I'm getting angry at my GPS, not the other way around.

Doom built an observatory on my skybridge.

Another mimic drop. It's nigh useless as a weapon but 23 gold is a lot.

Enough to give me a platinum, worth 100 golds.

And at this point... well, I've mined out all the adamantite I need, really. All that's left to craft is the spear and repeating crossbow and I've got everything adamantite can make.

So all that's left is to grind. Grind grind grind. Get Souls of Night or Souls of Light and craft a set of wings, then craft the items to summon the endgame bosses, beat them up, and take their souls.

That sounds dull as hell, both for me doing it and for you reading this LP.

So Doom gives me ten each of the endgame summon items.

We steel ourselves for our first battle.

The Destroyer is a giant cybernetic worm -- the Eater of Worlds on steroids. He shoots lasers and releases probes that fly around to interfere with the fight. He has 80,000 HP.

That's not a typo. We went from Eye of Cthulhu at 1600 HP to Wall of Flesh with 4000 HP to Destroyer with eighty thousand HP.

Throw in that I'm hosting a server, so enemies tend to lag and teleport all over the place anyway, and it's a truly infuriating drawn-out slog.

He even chases us back to our respawn point so I have to fight him in my own castle. Thankfully he doesn't actually ever destroy anything.

This took a damned long time.

I have no idea where he died. Neither does anyone else. Presumably the drops come out of his head segment when he dies, but where that actually was when the fatal blow was struck is anyone's guess.

So for all that effort, we got exactly zero item drops.

There he is!

There we go!

We try again, with the same result. Even with a full adamantite set of armor and maximum HP, one touch of Skeletron Prime's laggy, teleporting skull is enough to oneshot me.

Next!

The Twins are a pair of giant eyes connected by a tendril (that's not a tongue, it's the connecting tissue). One chases you around, the other keeps its distance.

After you do rather a lot of damage, the one called Retinazer starts shooting you with beams from his pupil. The one called Spazmatism continues chasing you, but breathes cursed flames out of its pupilmouth.

Three quarters of the way through the fight, Spazmatism just up and disappeared -- so when we beat Retinazer, no loot dropped. Another bug, another useless boss fight.

I download a level-edited gameworld instead.

And with that, I have all the Souls I need, allowing me to forge endgame equipment without worrying about fighting stupid bosses.

Yes, I cheated. Deal with it.

It's a hell of a cleanup of all that cobalt, mythril, and adamantite gear I've been hoarding -- all of this stuff calls for all of it combined.

Angel wings, too.

So uh, yeah. Any requests on what to build? Since with all that needless grinding (or its equivalent) behind me I can get back to sandboxing I guess.

I am told I should make the gameworld available for download, presumably so Doom can finish whatever he's doing with his dragon fortress. Here you go (http://www.intentionallyblank.net/images/lp-terraria/world1.wld), presumably you will need to change the filename from "World1" to keep from overwriting your own stuff.

You may be finished your LP, my friend! I beat each of the end bosses once legitimately then also cheated for items I wanted. After that, all that's left is whatever you want to build.

I think you're right! Because simple things like mining or destroying corruption are needlessly tedious with the new monster spawns. Being on the surface during the day isn't so bad -- Corrupters are bothersome but not that bad -- but being out at night and getting swarmed by Wraiths or going underground and getting swarmed by Chaos Elementals makes the game as not fun as a sandbox can possibly be.

I thought I'd made some progress on the corruption by flying overhead and gliding across it with angel wings, dropping dynamite as fast as I could. The dryad tells me I'm actually losing progress that way, since it spreads underground faster than I can blow it up on the surface.

I got a brief kick out of taking all the explosives I could out of the item world and just dropping down my hellshaft tossing out bombs and dynamite at the walls. I wouldn't recommend it for actually accomplishing anything but it was fun for a few minutes just making things go boom without having to worry about stopping to fight monsters every thirty seconds.

I feel I should warn you that there is no actual reward for removing all Corruption from your world. Particularly as doing so, even pre-Hard Mode would involve digging so tedious you will go insane. That's why most advanced builders just go for the quarantining we attempted with the ditch.

tl;dr: Your Terraria is now creativemode Minecraft: Any 'goal' is building some computer-upsettingly huge megastructure.

Or an eternally shitting butt.
