Title: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on August 11, 2008, 12:32:37 AM
I've been in the beta for awhile now, but given the NDA there was never any point to a thread about it, but with the release coming up I figured I'd get this up.

Legitimate Businessmen intend to reform as a Destruction guild upon release, with many old members, and old friends from Dethecus. Once server lists are available we will pick one, and I will put it in this post for those who are interested in not getting to level 10 before they find out it's on the wrong server. Otherwise this is just the general discussion thread.

Update: If you intend to play with us you should e-mail Malvado. The address can be found on our website (http://lb.pifff.com), which is currently a roster of people who intend to join our guild, and what class they intend to play.

Update: We'll be picking a server when the Head Start opens.

Update: We've chosen Averheim to play. The head start has begun, so if you've preordered the collectors edition, go a head and start rolling your characters on Averheim.

Kazz, it's an MMO.  You won't like it.  Don't do it!

I was actually somewhat serious. Norn, Hrae, Paco, etc. aren't interested in WAR a'tall but are planning to go way hard when WOTLK comes out. This is kind of a dilemma.

War should come out 9/18. Wrath is HOPING for December and more realistically destined for first quarter 09.

So..

Buy War, love it, problem solved?

Buy War, hate it, Buy Wrath, problem solved?

Buy War, love it, get burnt out, Buy Wrath, alternate? MADNESS.

But, you know. Buying War if it holds to that September release. Will see what happens from there.

Go Chaos or Go Fuck Yourself.

My guild in WoW is finally starting to lose steam and devour itself from within (mostly due to the GM's best friend wanting to allocate all the loot to himself  :whoops:) so as such I and my better half will probably be free to play a new mimmopurger when Warhammer comes out. We'll give it a shot.

I think the D&D RAW forbade you from riding Tensor's Floating Disc.  Not that WAR is D&D, but I imagine I'm not the only one thinking that.

In the beta weekend, I couldn't actually use the name Sogitking because apparently King can't be in a name.

So... Sogitkeng, Squig Herder from Squig Herder Island. Assuming I get some ram in the next week for the beta, lolololol.

I can't preorder on D2D because they fucking hate my money. I will probably have to just buy it on EA's site and wait for them to ship, so odds of me getting into open beta are essentially nil.

Wait, why can't you just preorder it in... a store? Or on Amazon, for that matter.

Also, I played on a friend's account in the closed beta, and I'm hot for the Chosen. Hopefully all you guys and my friends who are playing will happen to be on the same server so I don't have another World of Warcraft "choose who you would like to play with ever" scenario!
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on September 04, 2008, 08:41:02 PM
Amazon and all the local brick and mortar stores are out of preorder codes.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Burrito Al Pastor on September 04, 2008, 09:11:45 PM
It seems like bad planning that Amazon would run out, seeing as how they don't actually give you any physical object for your preorder.

solution: force them onto our server

The problem is, neither of you know which server you'll be playing on. And you'll probably decide, differently, within five minutes of open beta launch.

EDIT: Huh, how about that? (http://warhammeronline.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_servers)

Since my computer is as old as Sharkey, I'll be playing WAR on my friend's computer to see if I like it. If it is at least as fun as early DAoC was, I'll be buying or building something that can run it.

Based on the guild webpage's tally of projected classes, I'm leaning toward Zealot or Squig Herder. Suggestions?

I dunno what to play. There are already two maguses, so i guess we could get a good game of ultimate frisbee going.

There are very few classes that haven't been good times for me yet tbqh. I plan to push every class up to at least rank 5 just to give them all a shot (magus gets doubleawesome disc at rank 11).  Magus has issues, but it's really clicking with me.  That's why I've put in the most playtime with it so far.  I've got some concerns about how well the close-range AOE caster build will work out for it though, so I guess I'll see how well my shiny new armor spell helps in RvR tomorrow?  I like the rhythm of Black Ork a lot too.  The 1-2-3 combo is like a fun game of stunty whack-a-mole.  In fact, so far I'd prolly say I'm almost split between Magus and Ork.  Zealot wasn't grabbing me like I had hoped, and I like Disciple and Sorcerer both well enough but the latter's damage risk is kinda obnoxious since while every other class tends to get some nice big number telling them about their special thingie .. Sorcerer gets a color-changing orb you have to mouse over to see exactly what percentage of Dark Magic you're at.  and then you're slinging your nuke and all of a sudden  :scanners:  Otherwise I'd probably like the class a bit more.

Marauder felt nearly broken to me for the two levels or so I played it when I popped into a Scenario and was just slaughtering people left and right.  Hooray for anecdotes!  I also like Squig Herder thus far, but have not done much with him just yet.  The only two I haven't touched at all are Chosen and Shaman.  I'll probably fix that some tomorrow.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on September 10, 2008, 11:37:19 PM
Zealot is basically the only class in the game, as far as i can tell, that has absolutely no special mechanic. They're just WoW Discipline Priests with absolutely nothing unique about them.

Who are they clones of? Rune Priests?
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Burrito Al Pastor on September 10, 2008, 11:45:16 PM
Yeah, they're the "straight healers". I understand that they are, pound for pound, the healiest healer classes in the game, at the expense of being able to do things like blow shit up good.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on September 11, 2008, 05:52:40 AM
Their special mechanic is based on their Mark buffs. Each one is a very large, very specialized buff that has the additional effect of granting the target an extra ability, usually something useful, on a moderate cool down. The other thing they get a bit later is rituals, which are very powerful group buffs centered on the caster. Their mechanics isn't anything as obvious as someone like the Black Orc, but that's what it is.

And yes, their parallel is the Rune Priest.

Hope you preordered the collector's edition, because those names are going to be taken on every server ever.

PS Mildly irritated that I can't patch because I have to login to do that and I don't have CE preorder, just regular. What a terribly-designed patch system.  Guess I'll just have to grab it on Tuesday when the whole thing explodes.

If you are in the game contact Malvado, Orken, or Siegmund. We do not have the guild made yet, because that requires you to take a group of six to the Inevitable City, and we haven't bothered yet, but if enough people are on I'm sure they'll take care of it.

Borderline pulling my hair out over this game.  Three groups who wouldn't mind me playing with them.  Crew from back home, LB, and some of my coworkers.

The other thing is there are a ton of lovely games coming out between now and the end of the year, that it pretty much means having to dedicate videogame time to Warhammer.

I'm still gonna have to say no for now, but dammit there's a good chunk of pressure to hop in and it looks fun.

Realistically if you blow your budget on trying to build the capacity to handle every player at launch, you're going to find yourself with a massive surplus of power that needs to be maintained once the greater percentage of the playerbase trickles off.

IOW, launch on a decently managed MMO is always going to be like this.  That you apparently consider it worth the wait is good news.

Thankfully, despite a couple random crash-to-desktop-v.-cleanly bugs, War launch is way more stable than WoW's was.

Which is good, because my strategy for getting around the terrible launcher is to just stay logged in.

They're going to launch with a shit load of servers. They've got approximately one million pre-orders of the game, and are shipping 1.5 million units. I'm sure once Wrath of the Lich King launches in November there will be a large migration of PVE fags, but until then we'll just have to suffer a bit.

Title: Re: Warhammer Online

You can hit R10 in a day almost effortlessly.  It's around there (9, 10, 11) that the curve seems to rise.  The really great thing is the bolstering: though top of the tier ranks will fairly well menace you, with many classes you can pvp at any level and do not toobadly for yourself.  So you can play with LB of all ranks (until they outlevel the tiers I guess?)!
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on September 17, 2008, 06:53:36 AM
Yeah, the only hard limit is the tiers. Those are pretty lenient though. You have to be level 12 to have leveled out of Tier 1, and the same is true in the later tiers until 40.

It's not really about falling behind in levels specifically. I mean that I've been playing closely with a group of people so far, and I don't want to fall out of that group.

Straggling behind is no problem in the long run at all. We'll all be 40 and kicking about soon enough I'm sure, but my leveling experience was more fun for leveling with a group of people that I will now very likely fall irrevocably behind.

Taking the game pretty slow since I've had an overtime workweek, but even at low levels the PvP is a blast (esp. now that scenarios work again).  The lakes are a great mechanic and combine the best of Alterac Valley and TM/Southshore.  Even though first-tier is a little imbalanced because people are queueing up before they even have a second ability, once you get up a little (which I didn't have the patience to do in beta and I'm glad I still picked up the game) you can really tell that they had a heavy PvP focus in designing.

I'm really in love with the action points mechanic as it really solves a lot of the problems with spellcasters in other games (also that you learn, like, 50 spells and they all scale by level and stats).  The backlash mechanic also works as beautifully for checking Sorc in PvP as it does in PvE to compliment the lack of manapool.

But it sure doesn't stop you from destroying the entire other team if you have a competent tank and healer.

The thing that makes me so fucking hard is that PVP Tanking is real and it works like a fucking dream. When I'm protecting someone, using taunts and guard, among other abilities, I can tell, and so can they. You can that beautiful "Get the fuck away from my healer" feeling, and the abilities to back it up.

What?  Taunting works against players?

Do they become unable to attack anyone except you for a specific amount of time?
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on September 20, 2008, 05:58:05 PM
IIRC they get a debuff on them that makes them take extra damage from the person taunting them until they turn to attack them a few times.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on September 21, 2008, 12:15:03 AM
Taunt causes the effected player to take additional damage from the taunter until they hit him three times, and do less damage to any target they hit that is not the tank. This, combined with guard, can cause an attacking enemy to do truly insignificant amounts of damage. The overall idea is to make the tank a high enough priority target that he will be attack instead of anyone else.

My chosen class (zealot) has gear that's itemized wrong and playing it in PVP is pure pain. Oh, also, have i mentioned what a huge fan i am of the fact that PVP instances only have 4 tiers across 40 levels, when each level makes an enormous difference in terms of how effective you are, and while they scale the power of your skills and your stats, they don't scale gear? It's so fly

there's also the fact that ironbreakers are FUCKING broken but that's another issue altogether.

WAR, honestly. It's WoW 2.0 PVP edition, and it's fun. It's got a solid foundation and once the bugs and balance issues are ironed out it'll be fantastic.

Cryptic is building on a solid base here. WoW is going to be mediocre forever.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on September 23, 2008, 12:53:15 AM
Apparently getting a stupid team is unforgivable. Deleting local content.

RE: Ironbreakers. I hate to say it, but L2P, and also realize that a tank with a two-hander is supposed to be a threat to you, and low level PVP is not completely balanced. Ask Malvado about Ironbreakers. It takes like three of them to kill him, and that's without me guarding him.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on September 23, 2008, 01:13:29 AM
I forgot about all the options i have to deal with ironbreakers, like running slower than them because they have a permanent snare and not being able to outheal their damage. Should i be using shadowform? Is the key my thoroughly useless damage shield, which protects me from a little less than one melee hit before breaking and has a 15 second cooldown?

ETA: i like how you can ping-pong directly from "learn to play, noob" to "the game's not supposed to be balanced" without your head exploding from cognitive dissonance.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on September 23, 2008, 01:26:59 AM
I didn't say it's not supposed to be balanced, I said that it isn't balanced, and judging two classes (Zealot and Ironbreaker) by their performance at level 11 is ridiculous. I admit that there is not much you can do personally at level 11, but to say that tier 2 is a total wash is just ignorant. Any tier can be rough if you're at minimum level, but by the time you're half way through it you're a near par with anyone in there thanks to bolster, and regardless of your success in the scenarios you are always quite well rewarded, and the alternative to the tier system they have is not being able to get into a scenario most of the time. Believe me, I played before they implemented the current system, and in the lower populated tiers the scenarios never popped due to the level gaps.

If you can deal, then just wait until you're half way through the tier before you queue up. As for the L2P comment, I was just being glib.

Addendum: And by "unbalanced", I'm not talking about something major, like WoW hunters at 19. I'm talking about some classes being too powerful against classes against which they are already intended to be effective.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on September 23, 2008, 01:37:24 AM
What i've heard from Malvado -- and actually, what i'm seeing RIGHT NOW -- is that i am not actually rewarded for PVP in any meaningful way. I don't have any fucking use for gloves with +20 init on them, or boots with +23 init on them, or a charm with +30 init on it. I'm still using gear from PQs in chapter 2 because i haven't gotten anything better.

As for bolstering, it is a cute idea that clearly Does Not Fucking Work, or i would have a chance against someone who's +5 on me. Maybe not a great chance -- i'm down 2-3 mastery points, maybe a blue piece of gear, and some class skills which could mean the difference -- but better than being able to take out maybe 4% of their total health before being curbstomped.

Or are zealots honestly just supposed to sit as far back as possible and toss out HoTs and run if they are spotted? I feel like i'm falling further and further behind the power curve, enemies in PVE are half-killing me or more, and it takes some 30 seconds to kill a single equal-level mob. Part of this is probably the fact that as mentioned my renown gear is totally worthless, but if i inadvertently rolled a holy priest that will explain a few things, including why it is i am never playing zombor again ever ever ever.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Bal on September 23, 2008, 01:44:13 AM
Admittedly itemization is a little screwy, although that may be intentional in an attempt to fight mudflation. That's in the minds of the developers however. I think the main point here is that Zealots are a full on, sit back and fucking heal class. You can solo in PVE well enough, but you are not now, nor will you ever be, a face melter. Your DPS tree is for leveling, and maybe a bit of extra damage in PVP, but you are playing the healingest class that Destruction possesses.

I think you might be happier on Magus. Their form of DPS is as close to shadow priest as this game allows.
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on September 23, 2008, 02:22:47 AM
Contrary to popular belief, i don't really mind healing (i mean, i always roll healer...), so that wasn't why i went shadow. I did it because i actually hate being totally helpless (also, because it was enormously overpowered). The only things i see coming up are, like, AOE damage spells, which is puzzing considering how totally useless Zealot damage is -- do they get any really useful abilities on par with PW:S, Psychic Scream, or whatever? Am i going to be totally at the mercy of Danknuggz the Chosen to decide whether or not he wants to keep me safe, while i have no choice but to heal useless idiots? because if so, Zealot is seriously not for me.

Noro: You might try rolling the PQs for a while for gear.  I have not actually looked into Zealot gear much, but I hear the PQ T2 gear for Maguses is correctly itemized where their Renown gear is not, and vice versa for T3.  It's fucked up, but it's one of those "lol thanx for playing an mmo at launch" sort of things.

Black Orc gear is getting a lot more Willpower and Initiative. Not completely useless for me, but I'll never have it in number high enouhg to really make it worth while, which is the same for your weapon skill, although that is a worse case.

I would not be surprised at all if it were intentional because, with the exception of strength on caster gear, most of this stuff makes a perverse kind of sense.

I think he's talking specifically about the WHM, the White Mage in FFXI, whose jobs are as follows:

1) Stay as far away from the monsters as possible.
2) Spam heals.
3) If a monster looks at you, die.
4) Do nothing else.  Ever.

It's not really fair to compare Guild Wars to a real MMO in terms of PvP. GW will always stand above the rest because the devs didn't have to balance skills, abilities and classes for 1v1 or PvE.

That being said, I think it's possible for the devs to do better in MMOs then they do. I haven't played WAR, but I'm a longtime WoW pvper and holy shit some of this shit is just glaringly obviously stupid

Zealots aren't helpless. Malvado is damn near unkillable without a real concerted effort from the enemy team, you're just too low level to have all the tools available to you.

WoW PVP is a hideously balanced mish mash of PVE mechanics.

1) zealots have no issues, i can dps down 10 mobs at a time solo and i'm unkillable in pve

2) i'm level (11-20), does this class ever get good or is it a parade of misery and inefficacy from now until the end of time?

They introduced a patch that completely killed the experience gain from killing multiple mobs at the same time through AOE grinding (if you kill two mobs within a second of each other, the third will be -50% XP, the fourth -67%, the fifth -75%), which as an AOE grinding god of a class, made me go "what the fuck?"

And then one of the devs went "what the fuck, who's idea was that" and had it turned off within a few hours.

I think Warhammer's gonna be allllllright.

Ok, so I'm probably quitting this.  Hearing today that you can't queue for scenarios as a warband clinched it.  WAR is a tight game designed by smart people who decided the pinnacle of WoW was the Tarren Mill/Southshore zerg.  I'm having fun hanging out on vent but this game is not even in the same zipcode as fun for anybody who actually enjoys coordinated PvP, and there is no way I can see the long-term investment being rewarding enough to justify the retardation along the way.

Also, Witch Elf sucks and I'm not rerolling.

Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Norondor on October 18, 2008, 01:11:27 AM
On the PVE <--> PVP spectrum it's between FFXI and WAR. FFXI's PVE game is so solid that i don't miss PVP, but playing it without friends is not tolerable. PVP in WAR is so well-designed and -implemented that i don't care that much that what you do between battlegrounds is boring, unprofitable crap, but playing without a preformed group of guildmates will leave you pounding your face into the keyboard all day (at least, if you are a zealot, and can't just cheese DPS meters...).

WoW, therefore, is the boring middleground, which allows you to crappily muddle through instances or battlegrounds with sub-human pickup groups. Muddling is fun!
Title: Re: Warhammer Online
Post by: Brentai on October 19, 2008, 12:19:23 AM
WoW is the safe, average middle of the road choice that everybody's familiar with, and wouldn't mind having to spend the rest of their lives with if they had to choose even though it's kind of dull.  WAR is the younger, more exciting choice that's so young and so exciting that it quickly becomes obnoxious.  FFXI is the slightly more mature one that constantly tries to seduce you with its pedigree, but obviously does not regard you very highly and is far more concerned with itself.

...

MMORPGS: WoW / FFXI / WAR

Does CoX get no love anymore? :sadpanda:

CoX is plenty fun; it just doesn't make any pretenses at providing the level of content of the three mentioned.

The three Brent mentions really are the current contenders in terms of overall quality.  Most of the others are either sandboxes (CoX) or painfully broken (AoC).  When called to defend MMOs as a genre, I will usually suggest those three* and if the subject can't dig on any of them, they probably just don't like the genre.

To answer Kazz's original question, the general hoi polloi of WoW is actually a pretty fun bunch of blokes.  This is because WoW attracts normal people and not aspies.

*some people are apparently really hard for EVE Online but honestly that game sounds so ridiculously aspie to me that I can't in good conscience try it or suggest anyone else do so.

EDIT: Engineers were a mediocre class at best in most situations but Electromagnet/Barbed Wire was a ridiculously hard counter to Witch Elves.

And yeah, Bright Wizards were nerfed all to hell.  It's actually horribly unfair to them; their damage was way too high but they didn't gain any survivability in the exchange, and as a testament to the fact that Mythic has NO FUCKING CLUE what they are doing, the backlash system seems to be completely unchanged judging by health bars.

So now that BWs can't liquify me from 100 yards and Engineers can't pull me out of stealth by being in the same zip code, every scenario is filled with delicious candy.  Warhammer is still as dumb as ever but I admit it can be pretty fun if you refuse to take it seriously.

I don't think any of us still play but it's a tremendously accessible little game, even if it's rather sloppy in execution.

I haven't played it since a little while after launch, but it has a lot of potential.  You just can't get away with that unpolished of a launch anymore.

They put the Choppa in, and I have a machine that can probably run the game fine now, and I already own the fucking game, so I'd consider re-upping if others did.

Edit: I found it
Snagarbongue Orc Choppa

Double Edit: For some reason it won't let me onto the server to make a character.

I have a rank 18 Choppa that I've been playing exclusively in RVR for the last few days. They improved everything I didn't like about the game, and so I think I will continue to chop as long as the choppin is good. If anyone wants to join me, I'm on Iron Rock. If we can track Dontae down, I could reclaim Legitimate Businessmen from him, since the guild was forced over to the server when Averheim was merged into it.

To be clear, I am not attempting to do great things. I want to run around, chop, stomp, and kill. If you want to join me, feel free.

EDIT: Turns out Guild Leader defaulted back to me. Another awesome feature. Anyway, message Grikka or Orken if you want in.

Actually I meant it as a joke. These days the game is apparently in a sad state. Low pops, demoralized players, etc.

The above picture exists to show what kind of powerful stupid I really am. I mean, I bought five copies of the game and five game time cards just for a fucking mount. :hurr:

What I like most about that is the revelation that The Old Republic is up to 300 million dollars, and it's really just a shitty wow clone that's not even close to being ready for prime time. Hopefully EA takes the hint after this upcoming failure and gets out of the MMORPG game for good.

But didn't you read it? It's going to have FULL VOICE ACTING! You know, just like Oblivion! I'm sure it won't affect their ability to introduce new content in any way.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of bioware's awesome shortcuts with alien voice acting that we saw in KotOR. Every twi'lek in the game has only four lines of spoken dialog, looped out of order to give the illusion of speaking another language.

Why even fucking bother at that point?

That's four times as many lines as I thought they had!!! By the end of that game I was seriously considering genocide (minus one blue loli).

KotOR was an old game, dude. It might almost charitably go to a resources thing.

Now why the fuck every member of a given species in Mass Effect 2 has the exact same voice and model is a good fucking question!

To be fair, the one voice volus get fits their race pretty well.

But, yeah, for a relatively huge company with relatively huge funding, I'm not really impressed at the skimping on the voice acting budget in some of these games.

On a whim, I decided to check out the website. I was able to get a 14-day free re-up to the game (No credit card required.)

I forgot how good I looked.

It's a lot better, at least, and the population isn't as tanked as one would think. It's not the same zerg madness it used to be, but there's at least a keep battle or two worth of fighting to be spread around the world.

It turns out I picked an interesting time to look into the game. There's a whole bunch of rebuilding-from-the-ground-up changes coming to Open RVR:

http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/home/flash/WAR_games_day_10.html (http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/home/flash/WAR_games_day_10.html)

The TLDW version of it is essentially that they are changing the current push-and-pull of ORVR to a resource based per-zone system. The goal is the same (to capture the enemy keep) but the method for doing it has completely changed. Resources spawn at Battle Objectives and have to be escorted to the keep in order to upgrade your keep. They start as NPCs on foot, but as the keep ranks up they become armored and mounted. You can also steal resources from the enemy resource carriers.

They are also adding some Skaven that will be deployed for both sides in a limited manner to change the flow of battle. Four different classes of skaven, each with a different style of play.

All in all, I'm actually excited to see the direction of the game. There's also a lot of posts on the developer round table forums (http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/category/230/index) in regards to upcoming changes too. Magus/Engineer changes, Tank armor changes, renown changes, rank changes..

Well, 1.4 isn't out yet. Keep in mind things have been improved, but it's still RvDoor/Waithammer at times.

Saw this in the patch notes:

Warlord: This Renown armor set will now be attainable in Gold bags rewarded for the capture of a Tier 4 Keep.

How is this now?  It's been 2 years since I last played it and even then I had to admit it was finally starting to show signs of being a fun game (except for Waithammer, of course).
Title: Re: Warhammer Online

Without looking up any news or hearing anything lately: Probably still heartbreakingly bad. They made a DLC/Expansion/Money-for-power bullshit (http://store.origin.com/DRHM/store?Action=DisplayProductDetailsPage&SiteID=ea&Locale=en_US&Env=BASE&productID=221617200) that lets you buy/unlock RR81-100. It also boosts your Renown gain from 1-80 so it takes less time. It's a pretty grievous offense.

That aside, City sieges actually happen now in T4 and there's a lot of movement in the zones due to a completely revamped capture mechanic. It's still RvDoor, but it's no longer waithammer when waiting for something to cap.

You could always check out the endless free trial business they have going on. The engine and generally gameplay/lag has shaped up nicely, at least.
