Oh, and speaking of Flashbang:

http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/18073

Fun fact: that scream and everyone's heads snapping to the right before the video kind of unexpectedly ends was the result of a dude getting hit by a car. I'm glad he turned out alright, otherwise I'd be inclined to think that the subject of the talk was putting out some kind of bad mojo, and I'd rather yammering about the entertainment value of road kill didn't actually somehow magically end random lives around me.

ROM CHECK FAIL is pretty fun.

It's not real complex or anything, but it's pretty well implemented.

Except when you get stuck as the space invader ship in a narrow crevice and the gauntlet ghosts march in and oh god

I love how much of the strategy of that game is asking yourself "How much will I get fucked if I suddenly turned into Mario or the Space Invader ship right now?"

I stopped playing when the horrible screeching noise happened and I didn't have a volume control in game.

Poor Ocksi, born in a land where neither speakers nor operating systems have their own volume controls. How different your world must be from mine.   Yet its exoticness only acts to entice me further to visit its shores one day, to surround myself with it's culture shock inducing beauty.

you know how every day you come on vent and complain about how everyone's volume's all fucked up?  It's because you mess with that shit.  I've found the perfect balance for my every day life and I intend to keep it!

As much as I don't want to hop on Geo's LOOK HOW SARCASTIC I CAN BE side, it's not really that much trouble to slide down one value for like ten minutes and then slide it back up when you're done.

And just a reminder, I used to have 5.1 headphones, so don't bitch at me about volume balances.

It is sad but funny how you suffer, in much the same way that I'm a creepy xenophile!

I have, for as long as I can remember, had terrible problems with noisy signals. Every fifth game's music and SFX I try to enjoy is hidden behind so much noise that my options are either to play too damned loud or not at all.

Thankfully, most games allow for precise in-game balances that will generally let me combat the worst symptoms (BGM is a problem alone from time-to-time, but also seems to be tied most directly with noise. I suspect that this is entirely a construction of my perceptions and not actually anything real). But oh man, that one in five does me in right proper. It also tends to be part of cheap-to-free games more than real ones. So it remains relevant.

I'm a good admin.  I edited your post so that you wouldn't have unreadably tiny text, you big fag.

Anyway.  Since I started using Ventrilo, I've had to turn most game's master volumes way down so that I could voice chat while playing them.  As for noisy games without built-in volume controls, I have this brilliant little device here:

The, uh, brown crud on it is the remnant of an ancient attempt to tape it to the desk.  It is now wrapped around one of my speakers instead.  But, it controls the overall speaker volume!  Quaint, ne?

Overall speaker volume is never a problem for very long with me. Worst case, I can quit and adjust on Windows' little volume control thingy, and my current machine has a volume control, so even that is only seldom necessary. The problem is the annoying hiss that you get from imperfect recordings, poor connections, and the cord acting like an incredibly weak antenna. In roughly, descending order of how often I blame them.

Also, yon doohicky costs how much at what store? Did you build that shit yourself?

It's, uh, part of the whole Cambridge Soundworks speaker system I've got here.  It plugs right into the big central subwoofer thingy.  I actually have a really fucking great set of speakers; I've heard a lot of computer speakers that sound like garbage.  I'm even just using onboard sound.

Fluid simulation, in the same vein as Hell of Sand. Fun to play with, but the system requirements are on the heavy side.
