Freeloader
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:36:26 PM »

This week I finally wrapped up both this year's 101 Free Games and the first in a hopefully ongoing series of Freeloader videos.

http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/17048

But time and free stuff wait for no man. What deserving unknown timewasters have you discovered? Let's get this shit reco'nized.

No matter how many times I try, I cannot get that video to work.  Ever.  Other videos on Game Videos work, just not the freeloader one. :rage:

Actually, boom mic dude is a pretty good shit, who'd actually played everything we were talking about. I kept asking him questions and trying to get the camera guy to just fuck the stupid fourth wall a bit and just get him in the shot while he's trying to awkwardly hold the mic closer to his own head to say a bit about it.

Hard to get them to play around like that, though. Especially within such a short clip. Le sigh.

Agreed. I enjoyed reading the article in the dead tree version, though "deputy" freeloader didn't seem to fit.

I think my favorite new find out of everything in there was Crayon Physics.

Played throughout Lincoln Must Die last night, and garnered a crowd. Laughter being infectious and all, most of them stuck around until the end.

This is truly a niche game in this day in age, but playing a point-n-click adventure with friends and strangers? If a smart designer knew how to run with this concept, then a new party genre could be in the works. The fifty-year-olds in the crowd were just as into the farce as us not-fifty-year-olds.

CJayC came out of semi-retirement to construct a guide for the episode. Just how far does the appeal of this humor reach?

Perhaps to the halls of our government itself!

Attention, Off-Road Velociraptor Safair is now out.  I don't have time to check this before going to school - and it is in browser only - so if it somehow kills your dog or deletes your porn, I take no responsibility.

I do, however, thank you for protecting my dog and/or copious amounts of porn.

Raptor Safari is pretty rad if you ignore the fact that it is barely optimized. It will slow down randomly for no discernable reason, especially when I'm not dragging dead raptors around.

I installed their crummy plugin, then I sat and waited for five minutes for the thing to load, and then it ran so poorly that it was unplayable.  Seriously, I get a constant 40 FPS on Call of Duty 4, and Velociraptor Safari can't manage 10?

I guess that's what happens when you try to put good-quality 3D and physics and sound into a browser plugin.

The developers have been saying that they were only focusing on making the game and not making sure that it would actually run on anything less than a supercomputer. The fact that they developed it for a browser plugin doesn't help much either.

Actually, it played fine on my POS that was crap when I got it five years ago. I think any issues you might have have more to do with browsers and plugins than your computer's asskick level.

Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that the thing slows down when you whack into critters or go off a ramp. That's just drama. Possibly misguided.

So yeah, worked fine for me and I dig it.

Poesysteme is an odd one. Kind of genetic magnetic poetry. You know you're in for something with a French student project that actually calls itself pretentious.

Heh. You know, I think I met either him or someone he worked with on the thing at the 9bit party this last GDC. I seem to recall someone from Flashbang mentioning Tempe, and I said something like "Oh yeah? I have a friend there. He says it's a shithole."

In this year's 101? You do realize that we've been doing the annual 101 and the online/magazine freeloader columns for more than four years now, and most, if not all of those games have appeared in at least one of them in that time, right?

Actually, it's fair that I need to put all of them together into some kind of searchable, or at least sorted hub. But that's a huge fucking job at this point. Didn't really expect to have a scattered index of about a thousand games when I started this crap. But don't assume I'm just shitty at this, please.
