speaking as a non-dnd nerd, I've never understood the need to carry around gigantic sacks full of dice. Why is one of each kind not enough?

It depends, having enough to supply the whole group can be nice, but really a base set well do you 95% of the time.

Depending on the system you may just need multiples of single dice types -- for example the World of Darkness' Storyteller system takes d10s and nothing but, and you roll as many as 15 at a time to determine success (or, in Exalted, 30-40 or more).

At this point, it might just be better to use a program on your calculator or laptop.

Pitching a ton of dice out of your fist is aesthetically pleasing.  Sort of like striking a sword blow that ye may slow yon orc what hath captured yon maiden.  Begone, foul beast!  I strike at thee!  Hah!

At $1, this app is actually cheaper than real dice. That's assuming you already own an iPhone. For that price you could buy over three kilos of real dice.

I'm not sure which would be the bigger status symbol: 3 kilos of dice, or an iPhone dedicated to your dice rolling.

Having sold over fifteen metric tons of dice in my life, I have identified several reasons to horde.

Likes to 'collect' dice.

Started off with a mis-matching set from a friend, wants a matching set.

Believes that new dice = new karma.

Forgot to bring dice that one time, needed to buy a new set.  (Repeat often.)

OCD.

Generic $10 gift from one geek to another.

Also, that bit about bringing dice for everybody?  Most gamers I've seen will go /apeshit/ if you touch their dice.  God help you if you borrow dice and later on he thinks one is missing.

Some time ago, during a temporary bout of insanity, I bought a pound of random dice. I morally have to loan them out. I kind of regret the expense now, but still, every now and then I stick my hand in the sack and get that "oooooh yeaaaah" feeling. Even though it's just plastic. And lots of the dice don't make sense, like they were intended for some board game but got stuck in there anyway. There's a d20 that goes up to 26 or something. They can't even count as manufacture errors, and they certainly can't be used to cheat. "Woo, natural 26!"

I did get a set of green jade ones too, but those are genuinely nice to have as far as dice go. It's a tactile thing. But I draw the line at dinosaur and meteorite dice, that's just showing off.

There are few gamer predelictions I hate more than misguided beliefs like, "new dice = new karma!", or that there are 'hot' and 'cold' dice, or the idea that other people touching (or - god forbid! - using) your dice makes them 'unlucky'. And so on, and so on...

I have to try my damnedest not to fucking punch these people.

For aesthetics, I seem to have a fondness for plain old d6 casino dice (standard size, transparent red, with white dots). Timeless and classy.

A friend of mine quit my campaign because another player took his d20 and rolled it for fuckwhatever reason and "wasted" his natural twenty that he needed on his save when I got back from the bathroom.

Did you know that the numbers to be rolled on the dice are actually queued up by the Gods?  It's true.  And each die can only roll a given face a limited number of times.  After that, it will always land on a different face.  When all the faces run out, your die disappears forever.

I've seen games where the following has taken place:

GM checking a players dice to see if they are even or not (Fact: Opposite sides of a die should always equal N+1 where N is the number of faces on the die.).  There are some odds n' ends dice where this is not true, and they are 'unbalanced'.

Casino dice banned, because over-the-counter casino dice are casino leftovers, which means they are no longer precision perfect balance due to handling.  (What the FUCK does he think happens to regular dice?)

Players playing with incredibly expensive mineral dice (Opal, Jade, Gold Plated) that are tiny throwing a god damned fit if his dice collide with non-table things, and going apeshit if one slides off the table.

Playing with pewter dice.  (Yes, these actually exist.)

I could swear that my white d20 rolled often on a three, while my friend had a green d20 that frequently hit seventeens. I made the mistake of using the white d20 on a saving throw against petrification, where my dwarf cleric only needed a four to succeed.

I don't mind dice superstition to a degree.  If someone has a lucky d20, that's fine by me.  I'll often swap dice that aren't rolling well, but I don't make a fuss about it.  If it begins to infringe on the enjoyment of others, that's where I draw the line.

I'd consider it infringement of my enjoyment if a bitch like the one Friday described remained in my game.

Before I start a campaign, I break into each of my players' houses and put every single die they own up my ass, one at a time.  That's the only way I can GM confidently.
