I don't know why, but I'm a little surprised that's 8 bit color.
Probably has to do with palettes.

GIF only supports 8-bit color is why. You can do PNG animation too but uh people just don't.

I actually thought it had a higher bit-depth because I always think of 8 bit sprites as being limited by the selected palette. They look too nicely colored to me.

If I remember correctly, each frame of a gif can have its own palette.
