When I was in second grade, there was this little picture book about a chunky bald man who went around in a hot air balloon with cute little animals. Other than the face and the color scheme (purples and greens) this character looked almost exactly like -- and to this day I still think of this as one of the coolest things ever -- Pierrot le Fou.

Why hasn't there been an anime even a tenth as great as Cowboy Bebop?

I don't really watch much anymore, but it seems like most of the new anime I happen to investigate these days either reminds me of recent-past Final Fantasy cutscenes or poor EVA clones. I don't mean like 'good-old fashioned big fighting robots', but like, well... you know.

Reminds of the time I was looking for a copy of Tokyo Godfathers. I was in a shop run by a card-carrying recent Japanese immigrant. I asked him about the movie and he replied "Yeah... man, I remember when they were making anime that had, you know, actual stories..." he then kind of drifted away for a minute before telling me that he didn't have any copies because it was a total non-seller.

1988-1998 was the era of classy, sophisticated anime. Gunbuster, Akira, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop.

That all changed in 1999 with Di Gi Charat. Suddenly, surreal cutesy stuff was popular. Now it's all self-referential otaku humour and character descriptions that read like a list of Danbooru tags.

And Angel Cop!

It seems like a big trend for the thing people hate most to become the thing that kills their hobbies.  I'm so sick of the harem and slice-of-life genre that I can just hate things to bald.

It's great when the slice-of-life stuff includes hollow-point rounds and C4.

there was an auction that ended with buy it now for Card Captor Sakura volumes 1-14 with both movies

for $400

apparantly it went out of print at some point

I own CCS 1-18 and both movies sealed that i bought off of right stuf to the tune of $200

anime finally pays off.

I did something like that today.  Except it was buying all of the Smithore, from everyone, for like 50 bucks a unit, and then selling it all back to the store for 250 bucks a unit, and basically making a killing on the same exact stock over and over.

also i was the only person farming or making energy.  i was basically king of irata

A few years ago I saw copies of Shonen Jump US #1 go for $25. Now, a complete set of the first fifty volumes doesn't sell. I guess nobody wants old Shonen Jumps that didn't get in on the ground floor.

I'd read through them again, but I stopped collecting in 2006 and I'm missing the second one.

What was episode 4 again?  Was that when it got awesome?  Or when it got more awesome?  I know it was before it got AWESOME, but besides about 3 episodes the things just gets more and more awesome.  Wait... is that the forgettable fuzzball quality episode?

Most memorable part was Kamina making an incredibly stupid face.

the guest director has his own 'style' and refused to actually do a good job and instead shat all over the episode.
2chan complained.
original director tried to defend the guest
quit out of shame.

In case you weren't aware that this generation's anime is being created by last generation's anime nerds.

HA! HA!  I'M SO OUT OF TOUCH WITH ANIME NOW!

Seriously, I don't even know what the fuck.

Somewhere along the line, I just stopped caring.   :sadpanda:

It's because there's a terrible lack of quality stuff to watch these days.

Yeah, this.

Seriously, as much as I'm a curmudegeon yelling at the kids to get off his (admittedly nonexistant) lawn, I have no natural bias against Anime. But I sure don't see anything worth watching right now.
