Gary Gygax rolled consecutive 1s on a fort save.

At least he won't have to see where 4E winds up, I guess.

Wonder if he dropped any good loot.

Was that funny enough? Wasn't sure which joke to go with. The internet seems to be engorged with RP death jokes.

The best one I've read is "I guess this calls for 1d6 minutes of silence."

Variation from der Bronto:

Gary Gygax is dead. Let us all gather into a fifteen-foot radius and observe 1d6 rounds of silence.

From the Woot blog:

   1. “Quick! Someone cast Raise Dead!”
   2. “Don’t worry – he’s just playtesting the Astral Plane for the next edition.”
   3. “He’s gone the way of Star Frontiers.”
   4. “Analysts warn of a free-fall in Mountain Dew futures.”
   5. “In the next town, you meet a stranger named Barry Bygax.”
   6. “Now who will lead our young people to Satan?”
   7. “With his last breath, he cursed the name of Marlon Wayans.”
   8. “I wonder how they’ll divide up his XP.”
   9. “Pallbearers, make a Bend Bars/Lift Gates roll.”
  10. "At least he didn't live to see Disney's Greyhawk On Ice."
  11. “Lorraine Williams is behind this somehow, I just know it.”
  12. “The worlds of adventure gaming, fantasy fandom, and van painting will never be the same.”
  13. “When I heard, I cried 2d10 tears.”
  14. “Is there anything in the will about electrum?”
  15. “Heart condition? Wow, I always thought it’d be owlbears that got him.”
  16. “Suddenly, nobody in Heaven wants to hang out with Marilyn Monroe on Friday night.”

Penny Arcade made a comic about it yesterday, too.

2) Is looking for a ninth-level cleric.
3) Failed his save vs. death magic.
4) Is food for purple worms.
5) Immediately became an NPC.
6) Finished the Doritos.
7) Has gone pips up.
8) Is pushing up shriekers.
9) Cashed in his gold pieces.
10) Took the first step to lichdom.
11) Went ethereal.
12) Kicked on the end of a spear.
13) Didn't make his system shock roll.
14) Bought the farm in Hommlet.
15) Is taking a dice nap.
16) Has gone to meet Zagyg.
17) Rolled his last natural 20.
18) Went against the giants.
19) Joined the gaming table invisible.
20) Is sleeping with the sahuagin.
21) Drew the Void.
22) Ended the campaign.
23) Kicked the dice bag.
24) Retired Mordenkainen.
25) Got screwed by the DM.

I got up to number four and immediately thought "Rot grubs, you fool!" which, if anything, proves that I need to stop encouraging my fellow nerds.

Too late, considering your job.  It's "Brentai's party ran out of Phoenix Down" until something better comes along.

Director Anthony Minghella (Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain) @ age 54.

A cosmic absurdity that Colin & Greg Strause live on.

So the "My favorite recently-deceased sci-fi authors" queue grows by one.  More books to read and/or reread.  Maybe I'll watch 2001 this weekend.

I have a higher opionion of that man than any other science-fiction writer who's prime years were during the 40's to the 70's. And that's a lot of competition.

If you can think of a classic clichéd science fiction story, it was probably originally an Arthur C. Clarke short story.
