Wasn't Sonia Belmont of '98's Castlevania Legends the series' first female protagonist?

And what about Portrait of Ruin's Charlotte?

Sonia never existed, Sypha wasn't the lead, Carrie wasn't the lead by default, Yoko wasn't the lead, Charlotte shared the lead, and Maria wasn't the lead by default.

But what about Soma?

(lol wicked burn)

Doesn't look too bad, actually. The grappling beam is a bit, well, you know... but some of the stuff like the Giant Enemy Crab encounter and the bit with the floating crates seem to suggest a return to the more epic set-pieces of Dracula X, rather than just "this rectangular hallway is filled with bigger monsters". Or at least that's what I'd hope, but I'm probably just being optimistic... again.

And even if it's still not the genuine article, at least the faux-Kojima art is a step (or several) up from the lame Dawn of Sorrow and even worse Portrait of Ruin stuff.

How does the box art and such really matter when the gameplay itself is all sprites? Moreover, even minor changes in such a cliche', derivative series as Castlevania are welcome to me.

Ironically, the visual look and "feel" seem the most like Symphony of the Night. Which seems fitting, considering the producer and the story setting that I've heard.

CRAB BATTLE

CRAB BATTLE

Once again, the level design looks to be horridly dull. Best production art the series has seen, though. A combo system on a platformer? No "weapons" to speak of? More features not yet announced?

Right, kill zombie, kill zombie, kill zombie, right.  Kill zombie, kill zombie, kill zombie, climb stairs, climb stairs, kill dog, descend stairs, fall, right.  Kill zombie, kill zombie, kill zombie, right, climb stairs, open door.  Jump bat, right, fall, jump bat, go down stairs, whip wall, whip wall, jump bat, get meat, make another joke about meat in the walls, left, descend stairs.  Right, fall, kill merman, jump, jump, right, climb stairs.  Right, kill bat, climb stairs, jump right, right, open door.  Wait for zombie, jump right, wait for zombie, jump right, right, kill zombie, kill zombie, right, whip ledge, get multiplier, kill bat.
