Basically nothing about this makes any sense

At least we know it is another Metal Gear then.

Somebody in IRC mentioned that this could be the last mission before Big Boss decided to go rogue, a sort of direct prequel to Metal Gear. Presumably Grey Fox would still be around for that.

If that's Grey Fox it'd be somewhere between MG 2 and MGS 1, right?

Grey Fox (as Frank Jaeger) makes his first chronological appearance in the series in Portable Ops as a young man, but wasn't exactly covered in cyborg parts yet. Anyway, I'm just hoping for another prequel game.

And besides, Big Boss is still too young in that picture to be the Big Boss at the end of MG2.

He is visibly older and [handwave]MG2 was sum NES graphics.[/handwave]

So Kojima is being Kojima, and I guess we're falling for it? Again? Am I missing something?

Personally, if I were Konami I'd be opting right now for a quiet, almost unassuming announcement of a new Metal Gear game, and let the sheer left-fieldness of it send its own shockwaves.  Turning the hype machine on full blast is just business as usual, and considering that we were prepared to be done with the series it's really just sort of irritating.

Plus, a very large number of people haven't gotten around to paying the $460 is costs to play MGS4 yet, so all-in-all it looks like Kojami is rushing to paint itself into a corner wherein only the truly hardcore have the time, energy, patience, and resources to even attempt to keep up with the franchise.

It's going to be the long-awaited Metal Gear/Castlevania crossover. I promise you. Dracula will be piloting Metal Gear RES (it is short for "resurrection") and there will be a bunch of insane theme villains that are also classic monsters (in particular, the Frankenstein's Monster ripoff will deliver a touching but overblown fifteen-minute deathbed monologue). They'll invent a new Belmont just for it. It'll be sweet.

It turns out David/snake's last name was actually "Belmont".

The new cyborg ninja is Alucard.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising is an action game where you take control of Raiden as he travels around the world in 80 days by hot air balloon.

The reanimated corpse of Jules Verne will be assisting Kojima with writing the script.
