Alternate Medigun. No idea for a name. Plays on the idea that healing works by some kind of steroid vapor. Heals at the usual rate. Charges an Ubercharge a bit faster than a Kritzkrieg. On deployment of the Ubercharge, the Medic and his ward get a tremendous speed boost (somewhere between Scout and Chargin' Targe speed) and enter the phasing state for ten seconds.

Potentially, combine with a syringe gun replacement that can't actually be used, passively giving the Medic a speed boost and immunity to speed debuff effects, and possibly also to a variety of other debuffs, as well as granting some or all such immunities to whoever he's healing. Also comes with the Blutsauger's passive healing reduction (though possibly not so severe).

Going through this thread and seeing how much of the stuff we have now in the game is close to all this is pretty cool

BADGE OF BALANCE

Misc item for all classes. When killed three times in a row by the same class, you do 25% more damage and take 25% less damage against that class, and do 10% less and take 10% more damage from every other class.

The Long Arm

Rocket launcher for the soldier that likes sniping and watching enemies flee like chickens.. Shots are slow and low damaging at short range, but progressively increase damage and speed until they're about twice a regular rocket's worth at extreme ranges.

Also:

Speed Demon
Flamethrower. Unusually aerodynamic looking. 25% extra speed for Pyro and lets him poof-jump, but slows him down to Soldier speed when flaming and up to two seconds afterwards.

Optionally:

Rawket Fire
A rocket held the wrong way. Pyro's forward speed is considerally lowered when used, but can be used for running around and jumping high if pointed backwards. Poofer works like FAN.

the Itemtest is for making sure the models work, not for trying out new mechanics

for example, if you give someone the FaN in item test it will have the FaN kill icon but act identical to the scattergun

They should have fixed the import/export tools for models going into/out of Source/Maya/etc

Seems Valve are looking for models only, and not item stats. However, if Valve designs the item stats first and picks the model to fit, it's worth trying to predict what item functionality they'll implement next, then build a model to match.

i'd start by looking for a gap in the current item set, something that doesn't exist but would let you do something new. I'm thinking like the D&D prestige classes that made underpowered or unusual builds or specializations feasible, or repaired issues with an existing class that weren't noticed until after years of open play, or solved some other problem.

Look at some current TF2 items for examples of this. The GRU and meatsandwich let a slow class move better. The meatsandwich avoids the silly situation of a heavy GRU-ing to almost the front lines, only to spend time eating sandwich; the crit bonus encourages charging into battle instead of waiting for the penalty for running to wear off, and allows the fists to be used as a weapon again (useful if Valve want to sell you items in every slot).

Some other items: The Axetinguisher makes it worth using the axe for any reason beyond running out of flamethrower ammo. The Degreaser makes it worth using the Axetinguisher (or any axe, again Valve want to sell you weapons in every slot). You want to find any similar openings that haven't been filled yet, and design a model for that.

It's a moot point, though, if we don't have any 3D modellers.

This is Valve's game, damn it. If anyone's going to make it unplayable imbalanced it's going to be them.

A horrible idea: Pre-Update Sets.
Equipping each class' regular item set with the "original hat" gives you a bonus cogent with the pre-update games. For example:

Demoman: +2 grenades/clip
Soldier: +16 rockets
Medic: No penalties for double-ubercharging
Pyro: +20% fire damage, +4 seconds afterburn
Spy: 20% facestabbing chance
Other classes: Pre-update crit chance system

"original hat" probably means "no hat"

I meant the first hat each class got.
I was going to say "no hat", but thing is, every new player that started playing would immediately get the set bonus.

Maybe they should, though.  As you have it, every new player that started playing needs to wait or trade for a specific hat to receive a flat increase in power.  Team Fortress is already grindy enough.

Well, at least you can straight-up craft the Polycount hats. And not at a cost any worse than say, making a class-specific hat.

Valve has made plenty of mistakes, sure, but at least they've been partially receptive to criticism so far.

not to mention that most classes have at least one unlock that's just a straight upgrade

it's worse than the flamethrower unless you also have the backscratcher and you know how to be a snotty walljumper but degreaser is Better than the flamethrower practically without caveat
