Remember Liz Wallace's rule of movie sexism: Does the movie have 1) two women, who 2) talk to each other 3) about something that is not men?

Judd Apatow's films all have the same main character: A somewhat lame (man)child who bumbles through the movie with a self-deprecating attitude. Optionally, he is "saved" by a woman acting as both lover and mother figure.

I thought Knocked Up was better when it was called Fools Rush In.

I hear awesome things about Freaks and Geeks, but I heard the same thing about 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up which were both so cancerous to comedy that they gave me malignant tumors right in the laughter.  Superbad made it terminal.

...incidentally, LD, this is what it feels like every time you destroy a thread where someone disagrees with you about a cartoon.

In fairness, Niku has toned the asshole dial down significantly from making fun of my dead dog.

I thought 40 Year Old Virgin was pretty okay, but Knocked Up was just not good and struck me as more of a stoner movie than anything.

Superbad's title gives the whole movie a self-explanation!

I get that same-y feeling toward Will Ferrell movies.

But yeah, DN hit the nail on the head, I think.

Stoner-Comedy is pretty much the way to sum up the whole set, really.  Like 2001, it's probably popular because most people saw it while toked up, strung out, toned-down or just kinda drunk.

That doesn't make it bad.  It just makes it bad if you're sober.

Ghost World.

I'm pretty sure movies made in 2001 have passed the point where they can be called 'recent'.

Well Ghost World we actually thought of, but I don't personally find it to be a very good movie.  I certainly wouldn't ever watch it a second time given the chance.

And I love that you feel the need to chime in the thread, Thad, just to point out that other people disagree with things that I like.  Kudos to you sir.  If Niku doesn't like Freaks & Geeks, it doesn't bother me one bit, but I personally enjoy things that Judd Apatow puts out--not all the time, but most of it is very silly.

Well, I wouldn't complain too much.

You want slim pickings, trying being a fan of tragicomedy. This Frat Pack/Apatow sludge from the past couple years is good for a few cheap laffs every third film, but that's about it.

I don't understand what Wes Anderson has to do with anything.  I like a lot of movies.  I was just thinking the other day that it was odd that I couldn't think of a single film about women that wasn't a gigantic pile of crap.  I find that sad.  I want to find a good comedy out there that's a predominantly woman cast.

That's not a comedy though is it?  I am looking specifically at the genre of comedy.  That's where the snag is.

Like this very board, I believe comedy writers are predominantly male.  In both cases this will not help your search.  Good luck.

I've heard good things about Baby Mama, I guess.

Although now that you mention it: I'd like to see a movie starring Maria Bamford.
