See also: Within a Deep Forest.

Within a Deep Forest, Knytt and Knytt stories are not horrible games (WaDP was much shittier because of how hard it was) but I fucking envyhate the attention they get. They are not that atmospheric or fun. The graphics are mostly ugly even as simple as they are and a lot of them don't even match. FFFCCCK. I wish I could have made a popular game. :( nobody will appreciate my vision. :( :( :(

The "omg you gotta play this" factor of it helped.  Eversion was almost like a prank to play on your friends since it had a "surprise" to it.  While you'd think that would hamper word of mouth, on a small scale it really encourages people to directly inflict it on their friends instead of just talking about it.

This seems to be the pattern with a lot of the cult indies, like Yume Nikki and IWBTG. Neither of those games is particularly polished (nor is Eversion for that matter) but they make up for it by having something striking about them that generates word of mouth.

I haven't looked into it very deeply, but it seems to me that the audience for games like Eversion is a bit different than the standard "indie games" scene. Places like TIGsource seem to gravitate toward amateur-produced but still slick looking games like Cave Story or Braid, or arthouse bullshit like whatever Cactus shat out today. These people want to be "real" developers, so the appeal seems to be "hey look how beautiful/important a game can be, even though only one or two people made it". And they still insist that Seiklus was good, so fuck 'em.

On the other hand, stuff like Jinsei Owata, IWBTG and Eversion seems to get picked up by places like Youtube and 4chan, where the audience is less concerned with some kind of amateur-hour circle-jerk and more interested in "hey check out this weird thing I found on the internet".

The problem of course, is that the latter audience is probably much less likely to actually BUY anything. I don't know if a game like Eversion can really succeed in the marketplace, because the things that attract people to it are paradoxically the same things that might be a barrier to people actually wanting to pay for it.

I love the copper gradient. Reminds me of an Amiga platformer.

I can't look at that screenshot.  I keep seeing the ways it can turn into unimaginable horror.

The little ear looking things on their heads are going to flop forward with bloodshot eyes on the ends, as their eyes below rot and fall out revealing the gaping maws of teeth below.  The flower becomes a spinning buzzsaw of jagged rusty metal.  The green grassy puffs become the spiraling, pulsing entrails of some creature at the end of the path.

That is a really cool sky background.

The game looks like it's moving away from the simple 8-bit retrocharm it had before.  That means you're establishing its own style for it (and a really cool one to be honest), but at the same time Eversion was definitely tapping into the "bleakness" I've talked about in old games, where sparse screen elements led to a dreary and uneasy feel, heightening disturbing parts of the game further.

Just musing on style, not trying to nitpick.  It'll be neat to see how well "bleakness" can be retained with richer graphics.

I enjoyed the contrast between the happy little protagonist and the eventually frightening creatures in the first Eversion. I'd like to see you take it to the next level and really exaggerate the contrast in your next installment, maybe going from a town of peaceful rabbit creatures to eventually face utterly disgusting and downright horrible things.

They're still talking about I Wanna Be The Guy and Eversion.

I hope there is a good ending (for when you evert the world as evil as possible right before the end) a bad ending (for if you choose to evert the world as good as possible right before the end) and a neutral ending.
