Honestly the biggest laugh I got was the guy wrestling with the housecat.  But that's okay -- when the movie's already laughable all by itself, the riffers' job is just gravy.

(But man it's great hearing Trace's voice doing the riffs again.)

It's because Frank can do a decent Lorenzo Music, isn't it?

(Also, Lord yes. I loves me some Bill Corbett, but he's not Trace.)

The last Cinematic Titanic didn't knock my socks off, but... Honestly. The final ten minutes or so just make you wonder what the original filmmakers were thinking.

My understanding is that the people who made the last ten minutes were NOT the original filmmakers.

Via Satellite News: panel summary (not much info there); DVD promo reel, the upshot of which is that the 20th Anniversary DVD set will include First Spaceship on Venus, Laserblast, Werewolf, and Future War.  I don't know from that first one, but I remember Future War being decent and Laserblast and Werewolf being all-time greats.

(Also: costume photos from around the con.  Am I correct in assuming that's supposed to be one of the robots from Girl in the Fireplace in the shot with the Third, Eighth, and Sixth Doctor, or is it something totally unrelated like Trixie and Speed in the same crowd?)

NYT: new show to mock old Martha Stewart clips; Martha acknowledges cribbing the idea from MST3K.

I've been watching "Fun With Shorts" on YouTube for at least a year, but I don't think I'd pay to see them. This explains why he hasn't posted anything new on YouTube in the last few months, though.

Sounded like, but if he'd done a CT I'm guessing we'd have heard about it.

Finally got around to catching a Rifftrax!  It was Episode 2.  My God that movie is horribly written, horribly paced, and horribly acted.  I actually once saw it at IMAX back when IMAX movies could only run for a maximum of two hours; it had 22 minutes chopped off and was much better for it (though I kinda missed the archive scene).

Anyway.  Some of the riffs are good (my favorite was the "I love the water!"/"I hate sand!" running gag, which recalled "This is where the fish lives!" from The Touch of Satan), but the movie is still INTERMINABLE.  I never gave much thought to the fact that MST3K probably IMPROVED a lot of the movies it mocked by cutting them down to...what, 80 minutes?

Episode 2 is a painful 142 minutes long.  And I'm not in a huge hurry to watch it again, even riffed.

Joel and Trace have been touring to promote CT and the 20th Anniversary Boxed Set, but so far all the interviews I've seen have been totally boring and old hat.  If I find any good ones, I'll link them.

EDIT: Mr. Beaks's interview with Joel over at AICN is quite good!  He's a fan and he's done his homework, so he doesn't ask the same old crap that every other interviewer does, he asks questions that we'd actually like to hear the answers to (including one about Mallon that Joel answers candidly).  I suppose perhaps he goes TOO overboard in assuming what the reader already knows; I had to look up The TV Wheel on Wikipedia.

Also, there's a good bit at the end about Joel meeting Frank Zappa.

Holy shit, somebody got to mention the TV Wheel?

I just assumed Joel crushed any and all inquiries on the subject.  Trust me, it's totally damned justified.

He doesn't crush the inquiry but he pretty much says it's just as well that it didn't get picked up.

I should add that I first saw MST3K on Sci-Fi; the Phoenix cable lineup didn't include Comedy Central until after it was off there.

Rifftrax is having an anagram contest.

My contribution:

Ben Affleck is Matt Murdock and Jennifer Garner is Elektra Natchios in Daredevil. (Also, Joey Pants.)

Oooooh, Cinematic Titanic released a new DVD!  You get to watch Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff heckle Santa Claus Conquers The Martians!

... wait ...

I forgot to mention this earlier, but in half an hour (6 pm PST) they're doing a free Rifftrax Live event online instead of going to SF Sketchfest this year. "Free" is the key word here, because afterwards they're going to charge the usual buck or two for the short. (Yeah, it's just a short, so it'll be about 10-15 minutes long... most likely.)

Well, that was fun. They did a live Q&A session at the end.

They're doing another live show on Wednesday, January 24.

Oh hey, apparently Cinematic Titanic is touring!  They're going to be in my neck of the woods at the end of the month, so I think I'm totally going to have to go.  Prices sorta make me wince -- $48 a show, and they're doing two -- but I think I have to catch at least one.
