The State of the Worst?

HARD. STRONG.

Meanwhile, I checked out the old boards to read up on Vampires Vs Werewolves II, and found some points I should address.

Quote from: Det
Half of all WFE posts are Arc or Thad, that's basically the reason it's busier there.

Totally true for February, at least.

Quote from: Niku
i don't like the forum layout, i don't like the subforums (i can never tell if shit should go in slacking off or mouthing off), i don't like the "cleanliness" of the sidebar without karma or postcounts or anything, i hate the jerking communism avatar that half the people never change off of, the emoticons are pretty much lackluster

The minimalism to the sidebar stays (due to erratic coding), but everything else from the emoticons, default avatar, and subforums titles can change, no problem. I'm still not satisfied with the emoticon set we have now yet, so that'll have some work done this month.

Quote from: Kazz
well, Arc is too busy editing a new tiny image for every single thread to address said grievances

Plus, reading the old board only once a month to randomly find said grievances.

Quote from: Kabbage
I'm a bit too pissed off by Arc's hearty fuck-you to everyone involved in The Mayor to gather up any enthusiasm for WFE. Yeah, The Mayor was his idea, and yeah, he got the crux of it going almost single-handedly, so if he's wanted to take it down as a show of spite towards terra or Arcturus, whatever.

Not my intention to give a hearty fuck-you. My access to The Mayor FTP was blocked, and when I tried to change anything through WordPress, the index page was later blocked and changed to the readout you see now. On the factoid side, my initial first (junk) post (that is inside that text) reads like a going away statement. Suh-weet.

Kabbage has every right to feel burned, as I noticed he had a new article the very same day the site was blocked. Ugh.

The best part of that thread is how Vance wonders why nobody's posting and then proceeds to see how many of the biggest contributors in the community's history he can insult.

I have a button in my Firefox toolbar thing for WFE but that's pretty much a bookmark so I clicked that.

Also Kazz is kind of whiny.

Thanks for taking some time to reply to various inquries, Arc.  Are there any plans going forward for this board?

Everyone else: Please for the love of whatever you take holy, don't turn this into an us vs. them or 'so and so did/said...' thread.  This board is thriving, and there are handfuls of good, content-filled posts.  Can we be happy with that?

Normally I access the forum from a bookmark, but when I'm anywhere else but home, I use the  :sharkey: entrance. I'm kind of confused as to why there's no thread page numbers at the top of the page, only at the bottom. A ticker at both ends would make it easier to track through unread pages.

Kabbage (and others) really did deserve some explanation, though I'm not entirely sure they'll be satisfied.

Romo froze the corresponding thread over at pyoko, and while it bugged me a little in hindsight it was probably a good call. Outside of a few extremely antagonistic (but important) elements, the forums still seem to be one entity. Just now there are two boards (at different domains) with a ZILLION sub-boards.

Finally: I'm guessing using the browser history to always go straight to the recent unread posts counts as a bookmark, right?

That makes the two of us, as it should be appearing. No dice. Time to dive back into the code again.

Doom had asked if the board split was permanent, and if the future of The Mayor was up in the air, to which I replied 'Most assuredly.' Not much else to add there, except that I had expected there to be webspace for a community site by now. Not the case, as of yet. Time to pester Sharkey some more?

re: things that don't directly have to do with me:

I saved all the emoticons from the old boards, with plans to upload them and just use them from my own webspace, because on the whole I like them 100% better.  Also, I don't know what half of these are from, and I never feel totally comfortable using an emoticon or image joke if I don't even get it.

But enough about Vance, badoomching.

I'm personally not terribly invested in getting everybody from the old boards to come over here anymore; I've determined that pretty much everyone who remains there is just not interested in interacting the community at large anyway.  I support the idea of having two boards in that respect, but I don't think the Pyoko domain is the place to do it, seeing as how it is owned by crazy people (who happen to be quite unhelpful or outright hostile).

My rising numbers fetish hasn't been satisfied lately. Arc karma--!

But otherwise complaint free. The new forum ought to try to distinguish itself a little more, hopefully to keep lurker interest. It would be disappointing to have the quarterly new poster growth to slow down to zilch.

I like having no karma. Now nobody can tell everyone hates me without looking in the threads I've posted in, and not by the -10 karma I would probably have by now.

Everyone else: Please for the love of whatever you take holy, don't turn this into an us vs. them or 'so and so did/said...' thread.  This board is thriving, and there are handfuls of good, content-filled posts.  Can we be happy with that?

Good call; I've avoided responding to the thread over there for precisely that reason.  My point is more that a community requires a certain level of trust and unity to function, and after ousting the founder and the entire admin team, people kind of feel like their standing in the community doesn't mean a damn thing, and repeatedly insulting people who have contributed a hell of a lot over the years is perhaps not the best way to reforge those bonds.  (That may sound a tad hypocritical coming from these quarters, but there's a difference between calling someone an idiot and actually telling him the community will be better off without him.  I can only recall two occasions where I've ever done the latter, and they were both instances of egregious, months-long trolling from people who I had given many chances by that point.)

Flipside is that Vance has started all the currently-thriving threads over there, so he IS doing SOME things right.

And for the record, Romo's hitting all the right notes as an admin, trying to avoid the "us vs. them" squabbling and being very responsive to requests and criticisms.  He's been put in charge at a very awkward time, and I don't envy him for it, but he's a good choice and he's doing a good job.

I don't see it as "us" and "them"; we're all "us".  This community is bigger than which board you post on or which IRC channel you hang out in.

...Anyway.  Back to the here and now: I like the uncluttered profile displays, but of course I am a Web design minimalist.  I think karma and money are stupid and have no interest in trying to be any more Pyoko Junior than we already are.

Numbers junkie that I am, Det's "half the posts are by Arc or Thad" comment has interested me in seeing a more in-depth stat system.  I can see the per-day breakdown of posts in a month, but not how many posts an individual user (other than myself) wrote in that month.  Since I can see my OWN posts per month, I assume that's just a flag that needs to be set somewhere in public profile settings, but I can't say for sure.

I'm not opposed to renaming the individual forums to something more clear.
I find a lot of the current criticism on this aspect to be misplaced. I actually think that what we currently have is pretty much perfect, to be honest. I think that what our forums need are the following sections:

  • discussion of upcoming movies, comic, games, popculture, etc
  • discussion of online games that we are currently playing and want to play together as well as board based games such as werewolf, RPs, Diplomacy, etc. This could perhaps use a separation between the former and the latter but they should have the same base board
  • porn and relationship discussion
  • political, world events discussion, and career discussion
  • Our current projects and stuff we want to show off or ask for help on
  • Discussion of the forums themselves and other related websites

Now, I look at the forums we currently have and what do I see? Pretty much this exact list of sub forums. Maybe others have other forums they want or something like wrath to be added, but personally, I feel that all the bases are covered and to the appropriate degree. If some people think that the names are not intuitive enough, I can see reason for that complaint, but really, the old boards had the same problem with almost exactly the same forums (Lust and Jerking off are obvious where as envy and putting off are less so).

So, I wouldn't be personally against some name changes but really, I think if people just keep my above rubric in mind and go with it for a bit, once people make enough major posts in each of those categories, I think it'll become pretty clear in people's heads.

is what you're saying, basically?  Really I think the distinction between the first two is where most confusion is gonna show up.

The "Ministry" motif made more sense back when everybody had jerking commie avatars and the board logo was just me, Thad, and Sharkey posing like nerdy Che Guevaras.

If I were in charge of this sort of thing, I'd run a biweekly contest of whatever I came up with off the top of my head, and whoever won could decide on the 6 board names for the following two weeks.  But then, I'm gay for contests.

I'd be nice if we could just come up with a bunch of different themes, then have it randomly cycle through it every week or so.

Well, I don't think those really capture it no. If I were to write a simplified version of what I already did then it would go.

-Hey, have you seen this cool thing?
-Hey, wanna play a game?
-Hey, wanna fuck/fap?
-Hey, did you hear about this they've done now?
-Hey, wanna see this thing I made?
-Hey, what happened to the forums?
