MORE DUNGEONEERING!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1R_d_Ihamw&feature=related

This is one of my favorite atmosphere tracks. It's important for a fellow designing a dungeon to set the mood for the unknown. And the dangerous. .Hack actually had some fantastic atmosphere and I always imagine myself fighting through a dungeon against packs of intriguing, larger than life enemies as activated traps flank me and crash down around me, creating an awesome and tense encounter.

That sounds a hell of a lot like Bond.

ALSO, THIS:

Ah, Einhander.  Child of an era when Squaresoft had way too much money and decided to try their hand at different genres before realizing that it would just be easier and more lucrative to make Final Fantasy games.  Great game, you know.  If you're into shooters, I mean; if you're not then you probably wouldn't like it, but that tends to go without saying.

The thing that stands out about Einhander's music is that there's so much of it - twenty-nine tracks, to be precise.  You'd be hard-pressed to find many shoot-em-ups that had even half that.  What this means is that... well, it's going to sound ridiculous when I say that it helps create atmosphere in a shmup (a genre of games not usually known for being atmospheric), but it's true.  They could've just had a single track of music for each stage, a boss theme, a final boss theme and an ending theme and said "that's it, we're done," but they actually went the full nine.  It also has the neat side effect of letting you identify where someone is in the game simply by listening to the music.

The crazy part is that prior to Einhander the composer (Kenichiro Fukui) only had three soundtracks under his belt from his time at Konami: Lethal Enforcers, the four-player G.I. Joe arcade game and Violent Storm (a Final Fight clone).  Then he gets hired by Squaresoft, makes this, two soundtracks for wrestling games, one for a remake of Romancing SaGa, one for Front Mission 5 and one for another Sylpheed before leaving Squaresoft to become a lecturer and hang out in Nobou Uematsu's garage on the weekends making music.  Einhander is his most well-known game simply because it's one of the only games that was released stateside and was halfway popular.

I used to play the Einhander soundtrack over the anime store's speakers.  It was the only CD I'd play that I actually ended up burning for various customers because they kept asking me where they could get it.

If certain cowards like Kabbage wanted a real competitive challenge... we'd have to somehow make Wario Ware internet compatible..

Wow. Both those songs have their Japanese counterparts in their video rolls. And both Japanese songs are completely blown out of the water by the English versions.

God, how am I just now noticing this thread? Doom already beat me to one of my top five videogame songs of all time. Zero is just the absolute when it comes to Ace Combat music. Ace Combat itself being the absolute when it comes to games about Dogfighting with epic music playing in the background.

I can't find a decent version anywhere, but the theme for the Espada Squad is another favorite from Zero.

Past that, I know these three were mentioned in the first music podcast, but they still make me all hot and bothered when I hear 'em.

Another winner in my book for a really great soundtrack, and actually a fun game even though basically no one on the planet seems to agree with me ever would be Evergrace. The entire experience of the game is insanely trippy, but I love the thing to death so it's all good.

And let's not forget Forever Kingdom (HQ makes all the difference in the world for the audio on this)

I could name a million more, and probably will, but I think a good place to end is always an epic boss battle song. (Again, HQ that)

Rygaron just reminded me of another forgotten and maligned RPG from the PS2's early days: Tsungunai: Atonement.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVZ0M41le4I&feature=PlayList&p=CF45FC0234BAFDCC&index=5

I distinctly recall the final battle theme being pretty great stuff, though I can't seem to pick it out of a line-up. Although it might not be in there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCSv6eWSPMc&feature=PlayList&p=CF45FC0234BAFDCC&index=2

It's been a good while since I played, and unfortunately I only played a rental. Listening through the tracks, I'm surprised by how nice it all is, though.

My favorite character was a monk with a mace. He had a special attack called Divine Stumble, I think.

Rygaron.. don't be silly! Why would you want to notice this thread? It's just the ultimate perfect absolute essence of everything that empowers me in games such as Team Fortress 2!

That's right, kids! I am a being powered by music, good or bad.. only my own malicious ears matter, being the first and only gateway into my black soul.

Speaking of reflections of the soul..
