New Boards or Sub-Boards
« on: April 16, 2008, 05:05:49 PM »

The community's activity is starting to outgrow its containment.  I don't mind having few boards for many topics, but I think a little bit more organization would help keep less popular topics from dropping out of notice.

One thing I don't want: A dedicated bullshit board.  If you want a flood of worthless posts, gb2/b/.  Anything else is probably a good idea.

Suggestions extraordinarily welcome.

As was discussed earlier, I think having a definite games\notgames board split would be beneficial. Aside from that... I always enjoyed Gluttony, and there really seems to be no place for food discussion here. But that doesn't really require another board.

And I have to agree about not having a bullshit board. I've never seen those do anything but detract from a community.

I thought we didn't need a bullshit board because we had a bullshit FORUM! WO! *canned laughs*

Anyway, I really do appreciate having all netgames (esp. nintendo netgames) set aside somewhere they can be browsed easily for when I can get my mitts on a freakin' Wii of my own.

I don't think we need more boards, but if you need suggestions I recommend the following boards:

A creativity board for authors/artists
A community activities board for stuff like mafia games or ffags or game tourneys
A reviews board (with only a VERY FEW threads allowed to be made, like one for books, one for games, one for movies, etc. as opposed to a new thread for each book game whatnot)
A werewolf board (including variants)

They provide an outlet for trolls people who like the sound of their own voices.

I understand the reasoning, I've simply observed that it never seems to work.

Oh, and regarding the reviews forum idea: why not have separate threads for different games, books, movies, etc.? It'd make it easier to search and comment, at least.

This is something that we, Detonator in particular, tried to get done on Pyoko a while ago.  The catch-all "Movie review!"-type threads are easy to find and post in, but nobody reads through them.  So if you posted a really cool, in-depth opinion of somesuch film a month ago, you have to slog through page after page of unrelated crap to find it again.

The two problems are related.  I am all for having tons of threads; people shouldn't be afraid to post a new thread if there isn't an applicable one.  The worst that can happen is that it doesn't get much attention and slowly sinks away.  The trouble with making tons of threads is that we have so few boards.  I think you could solve both problems if you split things up a little more.

I agree with Kazz here.  I realized that the "Threads of Legend" problem wouldn't go away in Pyoko as long as nealy a third of all posts were on one board alone.  I think the game/non game split is best, I don't mind an online-only forum, even if it's nothing but friend code/who's who stickies.

I'll post a rundown like how Brent did.

Main Boards

Forum Discussion
Games
Non-game media
Porn/Dating
Current Events
Creativity Board
Board Drivel (pointless image/video/avatar/rage threads)

Other Boards

Online Wankery
Forum Games

See, the thing with the Online forum is that you can have threads like the old CoH thread.  That thread was monstrously large and got posted in for years, but only a few people actually played.  It sort of served as their little meeting spot to discuss goings-on and post screenshots, and such, it was allowed to remain active after the Great Legendization.  I expect that Warhammer Online is going to warrant something similar.

I think the old "Gluttony" and "Avarice" boards actually suffered from being too specific, while "Sloth" and "Wrath" were too general, and "Vanity" and "Envy" had tremendous overlap such that nobody really knew what they were for.  "Lust" started popular and then sort of totally died.  And then we had to build up a bunch of sub-boards because our regular boards didn't make any sense.

If it were up to me:

Forum/community stuff
Videogames
Non-game media/hobbies
Real Life (rolling personal food/dating/job discussion up)
Real World (larger issues, politics, obituaries)
Creations (incl wolf variants, RP games we're running and junk like that)
Forum Games
Online Hookups

Omitted: A "wrath" style bullshit board, a porn board because I really don't think we need one (any porn we draw can go in Creations, otherwise we're all just going to spank to 4chan anyway)

There has got to be a way to separate Werewolf from everything else, like in some kind of extra 'recent posts' space to the left or below of the one we've got.

Cause I mean, those're pushing everything that's not unremittingly gay right off the map.

I was thinking that same thing earlier today. I believe on the pyoboards we tried to make the Bullshit threads not appear on the most recent posts list.

Wait I just thought of something.

How about instead of a "most recent posts" list

we make a user-customizable most recent posts list

where you select which boards you want to appear in your personal most recent list

is that doable?

I've read a dark ritual which ensures that certain boards do not contribute to the most recent listing...

... It requires the splintering off of wolf threads into their own board, and the sacrifice of 'The Mighty One'.

I don't think any forum games depend on the Recent Posts thing.  The whole Forum Games subforum could be omitted, not just the wolf games.  Any given forum game is post-heavy, and the -lympics are going to be much worse.

Arc, what do you think re: new boards in general?  I'm willing to do the re-sorting myself.

Clearly, they will be called the "Worst Olympics Ever", or "Worstlympics", for short.

That's the obvious choice, but I think "Worstlympics" sounds stupid.  I'd like to come up with something better.

We're at least one board short; could be for wolf games, could encompass all online gaming.
