Clearly your goal is going to be to die in the gnomish mines after dropping all of your shit for your successors to enjoy.

crystal plate armor is, to be honest, really bad. The only people who get any use out of it are pure casters (as it has no failure rate), and it's incredibly heavy and very rare. Most of the time by the time you find it you've found a way to get a dragon scale mail.

protip: if you are anywhere near the isle, the castle, or juiblex, and you haven't genocided ;, you really need a strategy better than 'put on a levitate ring and hope for the best'.

If I'm playing a melee class and am in that position, I'll just dig through, hit the castle, genocide, and then come back up to clear out the level.  You can deal with a couple of sea monsters in castle pretty easily as long as you can knock off anything at the front door.

Dwarven mithril-coat is about the best compromise between weight (any plate mail is too fucking heavy) and AC until you've gotten dragon scale mail. If you're a melee non-Monk, at least.

And I disagree with Shinra: Knights are good, because their ability to #jump can let you outrun some dangerous creatures and their lance lets them attack at a range most monsters can't reach you.

If you lose the lance or sadd

High starting AC isn't everything and their base stats are pretty bad. Jumping and applying the lance are nice advantages but if you want to play a straight melee character, samurai, barbarians and valkyries all do it much better. The long range options for knights are also very poor, which makes fighting some enemies a chore. The conducts they're required to follow are also incredibly irritating. Having to make a lot of noise in every zoo and throne room you go into to avoid penalties is asking for trouble. They're still easier than cavemen, of course, if only because they have one of the best sets of starting equipment available.

the eels I basically forgot about completely and didn't remember they could destroy my ring until I stepped out the door and... they destroyed my goddamn ring. I have a mountain of dead tourists right now. It's really kind of embarassing.

This isn't my entry into the olympics, by the way, I just thought I'd share:

The occasional alignment penalty for hitting a sleeping or fleeing monster never bothered me much. Alignment is easy to come by.

PS: tilesets rule, ascii drools

also, tempted to make a silly wish character, akin to the famous max score snoo-snoo, but I want to try stone soup now.

Stone Soup does a lot of things very well, except they replaced Team Ant with some guy with a scythe who always shows up to kill me around level 7.

Sigmund is really easy to deal with. Move with caution and don't fight him in open space. If you follow Okawaru or Trog you should have special powers that will make dealing with him easy - strength and berserk will make short work of him. Potions, jewelry, and randarts that offer either ability will do just as well. Dungeon Crawl is a lot more giving with equipment than Nethack, so by the time you run into Sigmund you should have the tools to defeat him.

The vast majority of my stone soup deaths are to ogres in the early game, and mostly unfortunate weapon choices in the mid to late game. Melee should never use bladed weapons if they can use maces, seriously - you will get destroyed by the first hydra you run into.
