Nerd Moments
« on: August 17, 2009, 05:57:20 AM »

This morning I was grabbing clothes at random for work and just happened to grab boxers and a t-shirt that were the same color.

My first thought was "Hmm, maybe they give a set bonus."

My next thought was that I had to make this topic.

Share your own private or public moments where you realize how deeply ingrained your nerddom is.

I blame this particular moment on Diablo II.

One day, I spent 8 hours straight playing Warhammer Online before going to bed.  The next morning, I awoke from a dream to find that I was tapping my index finger on the mattress.  I realized I was attempting to hit the "4" key, which I had bound to Lotsa Choppin', the bread-and-butter melee AOE for my Orc Choppa.

I can more readily remember entire strategy guides worth of information re: certain video games, like Earthbound rather than say, birthdays of loved ones.

I was upset to see that Kazz had changed his whammy avatar.

Once in a while when I'm looking at screenshots of a game for whatever reason I'll catch myself trying to change the camera angle.

Ohhhhh man.

I'll do that IN GAMES, by MOVING MY HEAD (i.e., as if the screen were a window)

That's not a moment, just a fact.  I'm looking for exact situations when you realize you are a complete dork.  I think private moments are more revealing, because you're not trying to be funny for anyone.

I was talking to a friend the other day, he asked what I'd been up to.

I answered that I was spending a lot of time reading stray bits of news.

He thought I was talking about world news.

I was talking about news from Gencon.

For some reason, I keep trying to explain the concepts of BBSes and even MUDs to kids. "WoW but with text instead of pretty pictures" is about as far as I get before they lose interest.

I was with some friends and everyone was talking about what they were doing when the East Coast blackout happened. Partying, out on the road and didn't realize until hours after, etc. I thought back and remembered I was nine hours in to beating Megaman Legends Two without saves.

How about an anti-nerd moment?

I was standing around looking at video games when this older woman comes up to me and asks me somethings about iPods. There weren't any store clerks around and I guess she must have just took one look at me and decided I was nerd enough to answer her question. Specifically she wanted to know what kind of connector to use to download songs off her computer and onto the iPod. The thing of it is, I have zero experience with iPods or any other kind of MP3 players. I've never owned one, I don't have any RL friends who own one (or... any RL friends, really), I've never so much as held one. I told her as such, and that I had no idea how to answer her question. I felt like an idiot.

I'm sure this happens to everyone, but sometimes I'll close my eyes and see whatever videogame I've been playing too much of lately.  I first recall this happening with Snood in 8th grade or so.  The latest incident involved me blinking and believing I saw a bunch of tiny HoN creep health bars go down after a big AOE goes off.

I just woke up and looked up the Mojo King Bee stage's song and I don't know why I started crying but I did.

My brother once mined asteroids in Eve Online for eight hours then went to bed and dreamt about mining asteroids.

When he woke up he was disappointed not to have all the ore he dreamt he mined.

Every waking moment of my life for as long as I can remember, even when I'm doing something like chopping wood or charming a lady or spitting.
