According to the local paper, my favorite local brewery has a new beverage called Centenni-Ale to celebrate the city's hundredth anniversary.

Sweet deal: an excuse to head up there.

...So yesterday, I hung out with Brad and Felipe while they brewed their latest batch (which Brad had named Outstouting, but I suggested Stoutstanding is better and they agreed).

At some point over the evening, Felipe informed us of a truly heinous beverage: Bud Light & Clamato Chelada.

Clamato, as the name implies, is clam + tomato.

I'm going to give that a little bit longer to sink in.

Bud Light + clam juice + tomato juice.  (Also, lime and salt.)

So of course, being idiots men, we had to go down to the gas station and experience this horrific product.  (Felipe lives in a heavily Latino neighborhood, hence the availability; his Mexican brother-in-law professes to actually like the stuff.)  Being less manly idiotic than the others, I only took a sip; they managed to drain their glasses.

The best possible description I can give of the stuff is courtesy of a Google image search for "chelada":

It's true what they say about pictures' and words' relative worth.

(Brad has made that picture the wallpaper on our media computer.)

Clamato is great, once you get past that first wtf impression. I make Virgin Caesars almost every day in the summer. You wouldn't think it, but it's really light and refreshing despite the spiciness.

Let us assume, for the moment, that you are correct.

Given that Budweiser does not have a very good track record with beer -- a beverage I DO believe is great -- I find their foray into shellfish-based beverages to be horrifying in principle AND in execution.

So my parents moved and let me clean out their pantry for free food. Among it was half a bottle of Crown Royale. Having never really drank before, I took a sip.

It was like a wood factory inside my mouth.

How the hell is this enjoyable.

Oh, I assumed you guys bought clamato and beer separately and mixed them yourselves. The alternative you describe is so terrible to contemplate that it never approached my mind.

Let's say you've never played a video game before.  Then you decide to play I Wanna Be The Guy.

When I worked at a gas station, the Chelada drink was the most polarizing thing we sold.  People got into arguments over whether it was a good or bad beverage.  A group of people (mostly hispanics, but a few dumb college kids) thought it was the greatest thing ever and bought it on a regular occasion, despite it being close to $4 to purchase.  Others actively sought to steer people away from it, treating it as they would a leper.  There was no middle ground, except for people who just hadn't tried it.

...How in the seven fucking Hells has someone not said "Clam Juice or Mountain Dew" yet?  Especially in a conversation that Thad started.

EDIT: Because it was crab juice, apparently.  The Devil's in the details!

All that said and done, I hate when people infer that the mere idea of a tomato and clam drink is some sort of disgusting concept. OH NO, DON'T TRY AND MIX TOMATOES WITH SEAFOOD, THAT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA!

Brentai's I Wanna be the Guy analogy is pretty accurate. The thing about HARD liquor is that it's HARD to drink, especially when you aren't used to it. You can't just gulp down crown royal like it's tap water or milk or something. You have to drink it slowly and let it sit in your mouth for a little bit before slowly letting it go down, otherwise it is going to taste like fire or you're too hammered to care and should call it a night before you poison yourself.

From easiest to drink to HARDest

water -> orangejuice -> soda-pop -> sissy vodka drinks for girls -> sissy american beers -> real beers -> hard liquor

Your HARD is so light.

And it's not the idea of tomato and clam juice that sounds terrible.  It's the idea of clam juice that sounds terrible.

So some of my friends want to get me drunk. What kind of drinks are there that don't taste alcoholic but make breathalyzers explode?
