I wouldn't hate the holiday as much if the two weeks prior weren't filled with a constant barrage of advertisements about it.  Saying to couples "You don't love eachother if you don't say so with money!" and "Look at how goddamn lonely you are!  You're a total failure as a person!" to everyone else.

Isn't that every holiday now? Except it's not two weeks, it's a month (except Christmas, which is two months now)?

No, man. Christmas shopping and advertising starts on 26 December.

I do feel bad for people that have to go through Valentine's Day and Sweetest's Day alone. Maybe use your aversion to such feelings as motivation to go get a significant other?

I have to say, the past 3 or 4 years I've been pretty annoyed by the people who make a really big deal about Valentine's Day by going too far in the OTHER direction - oh, I must wear all black and wish everyone I encounter a happy consumerist/greeting card company/candy for single day!  God, get the f over yourself, seriously.  I wish everyone everywhere would just chill out for once.

I have to agree with MCE, the best part of this "holiday" is the candy on sale tomorrow!

"I don't believe in Valentine's Day because I'm a juvenile person who hates it when other people have a nice time!"

yeah fuck those people

I made pad thai and gyoza and roasted broccoli with almonds and we drank a little wine (okay half a bottle between us) while Norondor played Bayonetta in the living room. I fucking love broccoli

i made marinated tuna steaks and a stir fry but i did poorly at both of these things

the results were "okay" and certainly not bad but i should cook new recipes more than twice a year i think

also i totally forgot to put broccoli in my stir fry.  that would have been awesome

I don't do Valentine's Day for several reasons. First of all, the fiance's birthday is the same week, so it's a bit redundant. Secondly, it is a commercialized holiday that serves no real purpose other than to force the male in the relationship to blow $200 on crap that's way too overpriced. It shouldn't take some arbitrary day of spending to prove how much you love someone. Rather, I prefer an equivalent but personal night of romance later in the year to one forced upon you. Lastly, I have been engaged once before and our anniversary was on VD, soo....

Okay.
1. I like buying gifts for my girlfriend. I welcome any and all chances to shower her with affection. And if you are spending $200 dollars you are doing it wrong and your girl is greedy.  I don't buy red roses myself. They are too expensive and aren't that pretty. I go for the multicolored yellow/orange with some other flowers mixed in. Costs $25 bucks and looks great. I then either go buy some candy she loves or bake her something. Later on, we go out to dinner someplace niceish but meaningful (so it's not SUPER EXPENSIVE). Tab comes to around $40 with tip if that much.
2. "an equivalent but personal night of romance later in the year to one forced upon you." You can't do both? And more? Just because Valentine's day is the day you are nudged into doing the romance thing doesn't mean you can't be enthusiastic about it and it certainly doesn't mean you can't do it other days too.

Valentine's Day is great for this reason: Everyone knows about it. If you see two people together on this day, you know what that means. Everyone is in a lovey mood and happy and extra nice. (Unless they are dressed in black screaming about commercialism or something. Listen. I KNOW it's blatant commercialism and created for this and that. I don't CARE.) Valentine's gives people a whole day to focus on romance and it doesn't say you can't do it personally later on or in a different way. All Valentine's day wants from you is for you to be happy and lovey and maybe by a card while you eat candy.

THAT IS NOT A BAD HOLIDAY.

Valentine's Day is about quiet reflection and expression of the subtle joys of your relationship in much the same way that Christmas is a celebration of the baby Jesus's birthday.
