Horrible investment opportunity
« on: March 15, 2010, 11:42:06 AM »

I need some opinions on this. A long while back I reserved the God of War III Ultimate edition. The game comes out tomorrow.

My problem: I don't care for the game. Hell, I even forgot why I reserved it in the first place. Logically I should just let it go, but I think there's a way to gain money here. It's the ultimate edition, and it's sold out everywhere. Should I pick it up just to keep it sealed and resell a month from now?

If you are willing to sell the game on ebay, check prices there. Decide accordingly if this is worth your effort. Hint: unless it's more than a couple bucks, it probably isn't.

I also wouldn't wait. I'd flog that sucker as fast as you could. Game prices are far too unreliable to bother sitting on it, LE edition notwithstanding.

If you've already paid for it then I would say "why not?"

But it looks like you've reserved it without paying for it yet, in which case I recommend not bothering.*

*This is my recommendation for most things that take effort.

God of war is ubiquitous enough that I can't really see this being much of a flip. You can still get a Halo cat helmet, after all.

It appears, realistically, I could get $20 more than I paid for it. With shipping costs, I guess it isn't worth it.

Related: Bioshock 2 collectors and Mass Effect 2 Xbox Collectors don't seem to have gained a lot of value. The ME2 one I was actually wondering about - it was sold out in the first month of being available for preorder. Going Further back: Modern Warfare 2 Prestige edition is going for standard retail. It appears that collectors/rare editions aren't the market I thought they'd be. Now those World of Warcraft Collectors editions on the other hand..

The problem is they rarely, if ever, sell out. WoW CEs sell out because it's goddamn WoW.

Each game company prints a ton of SEs hoping that THEIR game will be of WoW-like hype and proportions and it never really works.

Also on some level, "Limited Edition" appeals to those parts of your mind that override common sense and drive you to buy it now. Examine the extra parts of it, and carefully and logically analyze them. Will I really use them? Are they not available elsewhere? Will I read a book once, then discard it? etc etc.

Meanwhile the Dead Space ultra limited edition is at like $450, when originally I think it sold for $150.
