You know how you sometimes get a song stuck in your head? Well, that's what's happening to me, only instead of a song it's a comic from the back of some respectable magazine (Time? Newsweek?) that some dude named Bruce made (I think he was named Bruce, otherwise the rest of the comic makes no sense), where the guy goes into his fear that everyone would think he'd be flimsy because his name was Bruce. And I'm like seriously, Bruce? As in, Bruce "Batman" Wayne? As in Bruce Willis? But of course I can't be too critical of the guy, because he grew up in the 60's-70's and who knows what they thought about the name Bruce back then (I sure don't), but I'm still like, seriously? Bruce?

All I can think of is how the first Hulk TV show had a different first name for Bruce banner, because Stan Lee (or was it a TV exec? I think it was Stan...) thought that 'Bruce' was a pretty gay-sounding name.

I'm checking the Wikipedia article for that (I know, I know) and it seems the real reason they changed his name was so it wouldn't be all alliterative.

And why would Stan Lee think the Hulk's name was gay? He's the co-creator; he could have spoken up at any time if he didn't like the name.

Was somebody involved with the TV show. Stan wasn't bitching about the name. It was the name he gave the character.

(Although he had a tendency to forget what he'd named characters. Bruce's first name became Robert because Stan started referring to him as "Bob Banner" in one issue.)

Stan claims they wanted to turn the Hulk red, too, but he put his foot down. But keep in mind Stan's got a history of exaggerating.

(Hulk and Iron Man were both originally gray but changed color in their respective second appearances because the old four-color printing process didn't work well with grays.)
