The Mystery of Dosboxin'
« on: May 30, 2010, 06:12:18 PM »

The mid-ninties are remembered by many PC gamers as a golden age full of innovative, classic titles.  As a retro computer enthusiast, I enjoy building old PCs and playing the old classics.  It has been difficult to find other interested gamers as the configuration of a real DOS machine can be a hassle, especially when dealing with IPX network support.

The emulation software known as DOSBOX not only allows for these games to run on the most modern of machines, but it also can emulate and tunnel IPX packets and serial connections over TCP/IP.

If people are interested, I will be more than willing to host multiplayer gaming sessions, as well as TeamSpeak.  I have a pretty extensive library of games, some of which support 4, 8, and even 16 players.  I would of course be willing to supply said games on a discreet basis.

Download DOSBOX at:

StarCon II is freaking awesome.  Except when your opponent's Fury respawns six times.  >:I

Community made balance patch.  All the changes are pretty well considered.  Amazing the game holds up under scrutiny after so many years.

List of all the changes.

How about a good old fashioned DOOM deathmatch/co-op game to start with?  It will be good to stress test the DOSBOX IPX tunneling capabilities.

Download at:

http://www.squakenet.com/computer_games/246/Doom/download.html

Also, when setting up DOSBOX, make sure you set IPX=TRUE in the '.ini'.

Who wants to play?

I may be able to hook you up with PS: Torment if that is what you are looking for. I still have my original copy somewhere.

Is runs great (though mouse movement is more a joke than I remember it being), and IPX has been set to SO true in the .conf.

Ok, to connect to a server, the command is:

IPXNET CONNECT <SERVERIP> <PORT>

This will establish the tunnel.  It will not work unless you have set IPX=TRUE in the config file.

For those who haven't played multiplayer DOOM before, or for those who plum forgot, you must then SETUP.EXE and launch from there.

I will try to get a game going tonight if there are enough people interested, maybe around 11pm (gotta bbq the shit out of some hamburgers first).  Whoever wants to play, let me know and I will PM you the server info.  I will be hosting the full version of DOOM, and I have it RS'd above.  I will try to get Teamspeak up as well to assist those in need of technical support.

Come brothers, let us revel in the nostalgia together!
