This is probably a typo but I choose to believe they're suspecting a cat.

Woke up about a half hour ago to the sound of the dog barking, then yelping and running, then screaming and slamming up against the garage door to the house.

Rushed downstairs as the screaming continued, flung open the door. Fully expecting large angry raccoon, (have had issues with them in the past) or maybe a skunk.

Find dog pissing itself in front of a snarling Mountain Lion. In my garage.

Took a moment to register that this was now no longer a "save the dog" scenario and was now a threat to my person.

Cougar is pissed. I hold my ground in the doorway as dog rushes past me inside. Cougar growls at me and then flees.

I am now awake.

The dog was fine, miraculously.

As far as animal control goes, I live up in the mountains and Mountain Lions are fairly common.

It's funny, actually, because Cougars are one of my favorite animals, but seeing one that close pissed off was... stimulating, to say the least.

All it took was Friday's cold, steely gaze and that cat knew it was outclassed. ( glad Friday is okay)

It seems now that one of the raccoon families here has adopted a stray kitten, appearing to be about six weeks old.  The kitten won't let any people near him (only calling it a "him" out of convenience), but he and the raccoons don't seem to have any problems with each other.  He will, however, gladly eat any bowls of food we put out for him.  These pictures were taken on the ninth, but he's shown up on two other occasions including this afternoon.  We're trying to get him to warm up to us so we can take him in.

Why not take in the raccoons too? You don't really need to domesticate "small" animals to keep them.

EDIT:
My less idiotic question for dooly is this: "Do people commonly keep raccoons as pets? What are the obstacles to keeping raccoons as pets?"

I guess you can find some Youtube videos of people keeping raccoons as pets, but they're definitely not considered pets here.  They'll never let you get close enough to pet them, and if they get into the house they're promptly chased out.  Being fed cheap cat food really just placates them enough that they don't go rooting through the garbage.

If you try to keep one as a pet, you probably get a lot of shit like this:

Raccoons are not rodents.  They are not small.

They have not had thousands of years of selective breeding to make them suitable pets.

They have sharp teeth and claws.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying it's a very bad idea to take in one raccoon, let alone 3 or more.

And you're stupid.

To take in a wild animal like a raccoon is not akin to taking in a stray dog or cat. It is more like taking in a wolf or mountain lion. And that's a bad idea, right Friday?

They tend to vector some particularly nasty diseases, too.  I think they're third only to mosquitoes and rats in that department.

Dooly you need to get video of the cat hangin' with the raccoons.  It looks adorable.

Det, no, you're stupid. Also, the cool kids only recently read Guns, Germs, and Steel, so we're still obsessing over it.
R^2, I'd say it's more akin to taking in an iguana, toad, parrot, or some other animal that's less than 50lbs and undomesticated or undomesticatable.

I'm certain there are some nutters who keep raccoons (tame raccoons anyhow) for pets.
