Moral Compass: Found Wallet
« on: October 07, 2010, 07:19:56 AM »

Assume neutrality in all cases to begin with, but feel free to argue with an outside point of view(i.e. I'll pay it back because I need the cash now, fuck that guy he's so well off and my old lady needs an operation, etc.)

I hope those options cover it. For options in which you can't be caught, assume I mean that the wallet owner/police are 100% trusting you, as it is rather impossible to prove that the wallet was dropped and you found it without outside intervention in the interim times.

Just curious after reading the Fireman thread about standards of decency.

You get extra EPs if you decline the monetary reward.

I voted option 1, but with an asterisk. If I can't easily locate the owner of the wallet, I'll go and give it to the police untouched.

Man, I am not going to search for some guy even with their driver's license. I am lazy and I would let the police handle it.

I guess I'm the only internet tough guy asshole since I went with "take the cash, give the wallet to police" and only chose that because there was no "take the money, leave the wallet where I found it" option.

And I don't care about all the old ladies who had that money to pay for their dialysis, I wouldn't feel safe with that much money in a lockbox in a backpack, anyone who would allow that to get away from them loses their privileges.

I've always returned them untouched when this has cropped up at work.  I won't even open them except to look for a license or phone number to contact them, how much money is inside is irrelevant.

People who get robbed deserve to be robbed for being so dumb as to gather enough things to make themselves a target.

I haven't had the opportunity to see if I'd go through with option 1, it's hard to just claim that without having been put in the position, but I'm pretty confident I would.  Further tarnishing my status as a paragon of human decency is that I probably wouldn't even vote that way if I had never experienced a loss of v. important property myself.  It's oppressive empathy with the unfortunate soul who's lost the wallet, not unconditional saintliness, that leads me to return it.

Where's the option for people who want to return the wallet but are so paralyzed with OCD that they don't want to touch it?

As a rule I don't pick up wallets I find lying around.  Doing so is asking for trouble.

I'd probably try and return it, but if I couldn't find it I dunno if I'd just go "whatever" and keep the money or turn it to the police.

I had to deal with this like, two nights ago.

Granted, the option was police mostly because the fucker had been trying to break into the house, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I considered for a moment what an extra $10 could get me.

The one time this came up it was at the theatre, and the person had their entire vacation supply of cash in it (the theatre I worked at is in a little vacation town). She was very grateful and honestly thought her entire trip was ruined. I felt like such an awesome superhero when this lady couldn't stop crying long enough to choke out thank you for like 10 minutes. Note, it was much more than 500 dollars.

I have also lived out this scenario (though the wallet I found only had about $100 in value in it), so I already know what I'll do.

And though I am lazy like nobody's business, you really take it to the police mainly because they have the resources to contact the guy and stay on it.

I might actually try to hunt down the owner because I actually enjoy piecing together clues to try to figure out how to contact someone, AND I get to be a hero.  The reward is nice, but I'm not hurting for cash enough to consider it a necessity.

"Hey, there's a driver's license with an address in here.  I'll just drop it off at the guy's house."

If you decided to pocket the cash, make that "I'll just mail it to the guy's house."

Usually just drop it off with security if I'm at a mall or on campus.  If it's somebody's wallet, I don't take it.  Now, money left unattended on the ground is usually free game, unless I saw someone drop it.
