Splatterhouse.
« on: November 29, 2010, 09:22:33 PM »

Can we talke about how Splatterhouse remake is the best thing to ever happen to my life and it's monday and I'm drinking and playing Splatterhouse.

I'm so freaking hppy for reals.  I am 11% into story mode and it is everthing I ever hoped it could possibly amount to.  References to the original are very apparent. But I don't like games that reference themselves with phrases like " thi is what earned us our M rating" because that is just stupid.

But the point is that I love Splatterhouse the remake, so much that after I played it for 20 minutes I had to turn on the original.

Always has been.

Not the usual reasons I try to get a small girl drunk, but I'll take it.

Guess I just haven't been paying attention.

But hey I hear Splatterhouse is pretty neat.

Splatterhouse is sooo fun. I took a day off work to play it because I had been waiting so long.  This is honestly the reason I bought a PS3.
I may be biased but I really like to punch zombies.  The gameplay is a lot like Dante's Inferno.  It is probably just like a lot of other, better games, but I have not played them.

You can unlock the original 3 games without much effort. I was thrilled to see that the Splatterhouse 1 you unlock is the original arcade game with the gorier graphics and higher difficulty.

The game keeps freezing though! My friend who works at GS says everyone has had this complaint so I guess it isn't just me.

How's the music? I read a review that mentioned it was like, metal and stuff, which can be okay, but the original trilogy had such spectacular music that I'm worried about the atmosphere shift.

There are some points in the game (including right when you turn it on) that have some fantastic redone classic tracks.  For the rest of the game, the music hasn't really added OR detracted from the mood for me.  It definitely doesn't stand out.

The comments the mask makes do change the feel of the game.  He keeps calling me a pussy and making stupid comments all the time, and uses the word fuck at every possible opportunity.  I could really do without any dialogue at all tbh.

Oh man!  I just got a trophy called Jen smells of rot... of the grave.  Seriously I had that as my desktop for like a year in middle school.

The gameplay videos make it look like a better Evil Dead Regeneration (which I am 100% okay with), except without the bits where you kick midget Ted Raimi into a meat grinder (which I am not 100% okay with).

One thing that surprised after watching a LP of the original Splatterhouse was that even though it was dumb and gory, there was still a sense of understated tragedy about the whole affair.  I'm going to to make a wild assumption and guess that the remake accomplishes two of these things.

For me, a big part of the appeal of the older games is that (Wanpaku Graffiti excepted) they are played completely straight and take themselves dead serious. They never wink at the player about how over-the-top they are, even though in many ways they actually are quite cheesy and cliché. Rick loses his love and wades through rivers of putrescent, infernal gore to get her back, possibly at the cost of his sanity and soul; no ifs, buts, or hahas.

And somehow it's done a whole lot better than in, oh, say, Dante's Inferno.

You both hit it right on the head.  That aspect of the appeal of the originals isn't in this one... it's just a "punch something until a door opens, then repeat" sort of game.  But they clearly had a list of enemies and visual things to add in the game and went through them like a checklist.  And I don't like games with much story, so I love this one.  But I don't think it was really worth the $60 unless someone else has blind enthusiasm for splatterhouse like I do.

I heard the xbox version has a lot of glitches like doors not opening but I haven't had that happen to me on ps3, for what it's worth.

You are a strange and funny girl, Cat Ears.

By the by it's marked down to $30 on Amazon for the next couple hours if you want to get your hands on it.  Me, I'm probably just going to wait until that's its usual price.

$30 is so worth it for the three classic games, so I'd say get it! (surprise)
