Left-Handed Coffee Mugs
« on: December 24, 2010, 01:22:44 PM »

Here is a thread for recounting stupid mistakes.

A few months back, I bought some books from B&N.  I noticed, in the process, that they had some free ebooks to download.  I got one, and tried to figure out how to strip the DRM off it.

I tried installing Adobe Digital Editions through WINE, I tried running various scripts -- nothing worked.  I forgot about it for awhile, then started trying again yesterday.  I banged my head against it for a few more hours but had no luck.

The book in question is Overtime, by Charles Stross.

I'm not sure how MEAT is ever a bad option in an era where we can deep freeze it for half a year.
It's winter man. Bison chili!

I'm downloading an ISO of a PS2 game to see if my computer can run PCSX2 and record video of it at the same time. It's fairly obscure, so there were like 0-2 seeds at any given time (the most reliable of which was in Brazil) and it took almost a week for the 2.29 gigs to slowly ooze down the pipe, while I distributed three times that amount to fellow peers.

Earlier this evening, I saw it being more than 99% done with an ETA of three hours later.

Shortly afterwards, I remembered that PS2 games come on dvds, not cartridges; since I actually own the game in question, I can just pop it in my computer's drive and emulate it straight off the disc.

I'll have some hoip with that doip, thank you.

I was about to respond "maybe not obscure, more like unpopular", but that would only make it worse, wouldn't it.

No matter what you claim the game is now, you're doomed to hipsterdom.

EDIT:
I'm sorry, I was wrong.

I almost did the exact same thing yesterday. I was testing out different games on PCSX2 and I was looking for a ROM before I realized that I had a DVD binder full of my games just a few feet away.

I did that exact thing too. And the only reason I installed the god damn emulator was so I could play the one PS2 game I own on disc.

Somewhere in my brain, emulation = downloading ROMs

You actually have to do this with Commodore Amiga emulators, because PC floppy drives can't read the Amiga floppy disk format (if you even have a floppy disk drive these days).

Actually, Playstation is one of the few emulatable systems you can use the original media with. Most are cartridge-based or use a special CD format.

I've never owned a PS2 (dad has a grudge against sony, was never allowed to buy one) so i bought the one game i really wanted to play and emulated it. Turns out the current version of PCSX2 has a game breaking glitch for this game. QQ. At least it was used and only like 5 bucks.

It should match up.

80+31=111
81+30=111
82+29=111
83+28=111
84+27=111
etc.
