I hope to hell Sega comes back. That would rock.

I know Guild is legitimately crazy. Actually bonkers. Certifiably nuts.

But it JUST now hit me how far off the deep end the wackjob is.

It turns out the Dreamcast can buy over a decade of goodwill.

So I picked up a PSP Go today.

Sure would be nice to play games on it.

Ayup.
I know I'm a little late on this, but Half-Byte Loader loads homebrew. You could pass some time with that. Of particular interest, if you don't have a Kindle/Nook/smartphone, is Bookr, which lets you read books (PDF, djvu, txt, but unsure about mobi/epub) on eyesight-destroyingly small text. (It's fine when the PSP is right by your face, when lying on your side, but I wouldn't really sit with it.)

(If you get Prometheus or aLoader, it also loads a lot of ISO/CSO files, but it's not like those are readily available through a quick search. :8V:)

Consoles have planned obsolescence built right into them. I know you can upgrade modern ones a bit, but they're still frozen in time in a far more rigid way than PCs will ever be. You can have a PC that's almost ten years old and will still play at least a few new games. Consoles? You'll be at least three full generations down the line.
Sony went beyond the usual planned obscolescence and straight to "Fuck you; we're removing features." Bye, OtherOS. (To be fair, it wasn't exactly a gaming feature, unless you just have to play Tux Racer.)

Late to the party on this, but:
Ps3 was a fuckup from the start money-wise. They sold it not just at a loss, but below the cost of their bluray players so they not only lost money on the console, but they stole sales from other parts of their own company.
This is exactly what Sony did with PS2s and DVD players back when DVD players were still new and cost a fortune. It may not have worked this time, but you can't blame them for replicating a strategy that was responsible for a huge part of the PS2's early success.

I have heard of this! Right now there's no version for the newest firmware, though, so I'll have to wait a bit before I can try it out.

I can blame them for not actually replicating the complete strategy but in fact detracting from it. No early titles, exclusive titles lost. Promises broken. Dreams shattered. I will never have an HD Monster Hunter thanks to Sony not wooing Capcom early in the game. It is corporate hubris that assumed because they are a big name in the game, other companies will bow to them.

The entire point of the DVD player is to add value to a competitive product. When your game playing machine has no real draw by itself, selling it as a BD player is a dumb strategy.

Also it does less over time. Congrats Sony on the value subtraction.

Sure you can.

DVD was new but it was a settled, agreed-upon format across the industry, whose benefits over its decades-old predecessor were obvious even to people with cheap TV's.

Blu-Ray was a new format released a few scant years after everyone had ALREADY updated their entire video library.  When it debuted it was in a format war with HD-DVD; today it's in a format war with streaming media and various formats of downloadable video.  And at the time it was released, most people didn't own TV sets that could display HD content; that's changed but the rest of its drawbacks haven't.

Sony thinking Blu-Ray was equivalent to DVD WAS a fuckup.

Illinois was the last state to get PSN back up at 2am.
They will incrementally release codes for free games over the next few weeks. So as to not overload the system with everyone downloading games, I guess.

Well, that'll be after they incrementally bring the PSN store back up.

Well now I wish I didn't own inFAMOUS already.

I also wish I didn't own LittleBigPlanet already, but that has nothing to do with the giveaway.

And here's what Sony's giving as an apology gift.

Not great, but not too bad.

the games aren't bad, but the list of of other gifts are like if they tried to hand you a delicious cake and then accidentally shot you in the face instead

free movie rental of their choice for a weekend awesome thanks this totally makes up for credit card theft

I think the point is they could have gotten more goodwill if they hadn't been incompetent AND evil.

Like say, PSN anniversary, give away two games. Costs them less than this whole fiasco did and would go over much better with the gamers than Your credit card stolen, give away two games.

BusinessWeek is taking the "This may have happened because Sony pissed off hackers" tack.  I still don't buy it (even if Sony claims to have found a text file saying "We are legion" left behind), but as we've said elsewhere in the thread it could at least serve as a valuable lesson.  Especially if mainstream business news outlets are taking that angle on the story.

Dead Nation is almost sickening to watch.  The first time you see zombies rush a beeping grenade or car alarm, you know, a fucking Boomer you wonder how the fuck this managed to leave the message board where somebody posted "L4D2D LOLOLOLOL"
