The funny thing about the bosses is that there were unavoidable bosses in the original Deus Ex, too. (I'm here thinking of Mr. Hermann and Ms. Navarre.) Except that those had a tidy manner in which you could sidestep them if you were a l33t haxxor and read everybody's email.

Out of curiosity, do many NPCs show up from the original? Any cameos by Hermann, Manderley, Sam Carter, etc?

It's a prequel. Manderley is namedropped a couple of times.

Several people get name dropped, or appear briefly. Additionally, given the nature of the world, there are corporations important to Deus Ex that already exist 20 years earlier, for instance VersaLife is extremely prominent as the primary producer of the drug Neuropozyne, an anti-rejection drug that cyber augs have to take for the remainder of their lives.

You couldn't avoid killing them, and you couldn't avoid encountering them, but you could avoid killing them with guns.

You could also do really weird shit to them, like kill Navarre in a mission, then report her KIA. Really the one encounter in DX1 that bugged me was the forced capture by Hermann. It's the only time in the game I can think of where you have really no control over the outcome of the event.

you could avoid killing them too. you don't need to kill anyone, literally, and you're only forced into conflict with g. hermann once, at the subway station.

Deus Ex 3's shit actually does stink, guys.

Navarre has to die, unless you use an exploit to avoid her.

Guys the difference between DX and DX3 is that you are never locked in a room with an enemy until it is dead.

You can't avoid killing Anna (unless you trick a soldier into opening the door, which is easier said than done) because Alex has the door key and won't give it up until you've killed her. Even if you do exploit your way past her the game treats her as if she were dead - Gunther still talks to you about it, etc. Clearly not an intended outcome.

Also, you're forced to kill (or knock out, which is essentially the same from the engine's point of view) Howard Strong at the missile base before you can move on to the last level. He's not exactly a boss, though.

Every other boss can just be ran away from.

Finally got around to finishing it, also this:

Deus Ex: HR - Namir Boss Fight [No Bullets] [One Punch] [Hardest Difficulty]

Pretty fun game.

Also, what is norondor's deal, did he run out of stun gun ammo for the last boss, and didn't he have a laser that shoots through walls that also works on the last boss?

In fact:

actually i heard a couple of those alternate solutions afterwards. at the time, i was so primed by the other ass-terrible boss fights i just assumed they wouldn't even allow a non-lethal option for the hyronettes.

Turns out the reason the boss fights are so orthogonal to the rest of the game is because they were outsourced.

Just beat it after taking like a two week break.

FINAL REPORT

Just as good as the original, if not better. I didn't mind the boss fights, mechanically, though I share Noro's feelings about
the game fucking forcing you to kill the Hyron Drones.
The bosses actually felt good, to me! I liked the change of pace from always sneaking around. I felt like it was an opportunity to let loose and shoot a guy. I guess I can understand why others didn't enjoy them; if you hadn't ever used a gun up to that point then you'd have to learn how while being shot at with a minigun.

In any case, the rest of the game is fucking amazing.

Did anyone else find the secret computer/email in Hanger 18? Because what the fuck does it mean.
