are you really letting the dream die

Believe me, nobody is less pleased than I. I may end up just straight up releasing what I have. A mass playtest (or beta) might help improve areas people are having trouble with, spark interest, and then we can do an official release with all the bells and whistles.

But honestly, EK's magic has always been the bells and whistles, the sense of creativity. I can level design like a motherfucker, but the rest is up to someone who isn't me.

Whom do you need me to blackmail to get this done?

Newbie and Lee-Ham and anyone who can art

RE: Mongrel: Any kind of art is fine. There doesn't have to be a "style". You are limited quite a bit in size restraints, because it has to fit in tiny, tiny screens.

Also to be quite honest even if I magically became Bob fucking Ross and finished all the artwork myself, the game would be like 80% Friday designed content, which I'm not exactly happy with. EK is about the community.

Large, muscly women with huge guns.

If you are actually interested in doing art, I have a list of stuff. I don't want to post publicly because SPOILERS, but ask me on IRC or shoot me a PM and I can send you the list.

I asked because I have (embarrassingly) quite literally never looked at EK. I have no background or context for any of this, really, other than "Hey the guys on the boards get together an make video games sometimes", so I don't really have an understanding of what would be needed.

Basically, guys from here make gameplay levels using Knytt Stories, which is an editor. Included in that editor is the ability to show cutscenes with art.

For example, it could be "Scene of Juni riding a dinosaur."

If you're interested in doing art, then you'd just... draw that. Juni has a canonical appearance now (Thigh high black boots, white dress, long dark hair) but other than that you've got creative license. As I said, the screen is very tiny. I don't remember how big exactly. Lee-Ham or Bongo probably knows.

Does this need to be pixel art, or it is just converted?

The exact screen dimensions would probably be good know too.

How many images do you need and what are the descriptions?

So I just played through ek2 in order to get me back in the mood to actually work on this, and, couple of things I noticed:

1. You can sequence break the shit out of the game if you know what you're doing. That's kind of neat. Though you miss Kazz, Niku, and Zara's areas entirely.

2. Wow we were dicks with save points. Though I was the worst offender by far, holy shit were they scarce throughout the entire game.

3. Speaking of worst offender, my area sucks. The enemies are random as shit and skill has little to do with success.

4. The amount of work Newbie must have had to do is in-fucking-sane. I'm not looking forward to putting this all together, especially because I have no fucking idea what the fuck I'm doing.

Just gonna put that there again.

Anyway, it's still an awesome fucking game, even if it has broken parts. The ending is so fucking good I want to have sex with it.

The entire game is beatable without once using/getting the hologram, by the way. Not that I recommend it to anyone who is not Niku.

So also, all the sudden I have three people asking what they can do as far as art goes on top of Lee-Ham.

I don't want you guys to end up doing the same shit as another artist! Please let me know asap what you're interested in doing before you do it. If someone else has already taken the scene, I'll let you know.

Friday asked me to provide some reference for Juni's design, so here's what I've been using. These are from the story packs "The Machine" and "A Strange Dream" made by Nifflas, the creator of Knytt, and are basically the only thing resembling "official art" that I am aware of.

My philosophy with Juni is that her design is pretty much free for interpretation. She is usually portrayed as kind of a waifish fraggle, but of course when I draw her I give her thigh highs and no underwear.

Here's Punchy's take from the EK1 intro.

And from the sage's vision in EK2... I... don't know who drew this one. B...Brentai?

For EK3 I've also given her black gloves with slightly claw-like fingers to give her a somewhat bird-like quality (and to make her look more like the sprite, which has thin black arms and legs.) You can see an example by clicking on the link below which has been hermetically sealed behind a hyperlink to preserve freshness:

I only drew the parts of the cutscene with weird inkbrush stick figures.

When I look at her sprite, it looks to me like she has a pompadour, So she should be drawn as a badass, possibly with her umbrella casually over her shoulder and a toothpick between her teeth.

Considering the sort of things she goes through, I find that interpretation highly appropriate.

Does this need to be pixel art, or it is just converted?

EK2 had a variety of different styles present. Some were pixel art reproductions of plausible scenes, some were really nice illustrations, some were crayon doodles, and there were even a few straight-up walls-o-text. The eclectic nature of it all was to its benefit. Each area was very much in the style of its creator, so it makes sense that the same was true for the art.

If you want the text in the scene to match the text displayed by the engine, I believe you want Courier (not Courier New) at 10pt size, or maybe it was 8pt. You'll know you've got it right when it doesn't have or need any antialiasing.

So I just redesigned the final boss for the seventh time

no that is not an exaggeration

at this point I think I am going to include an "unused final boss rush" bonus area at the end of the game or something

A long time ago I mentioned that I'd totally pay for some physical, non-porn Lee Ham Juni art.

That offer stands.
