You should refer to the first few episodes of avatar, where Aang goes into the avatar state because he is in terrible danger. Also sealing himself in an iceberg. The avatar state is also an involuntary defense mechanism, you don't need to be spiritual in any sort of way to do it, you just need to be the avatar.
Also, Asami being in league with the equalists would be the dumbest and most laziest way to resolve the love interest conflict. I hope they don't actually do that.
You need to be spiritual to invoke it on-demand and remain in control during the process, however.

When you get right down to it, nobody's been put in any sort of actual mortal danger yet, so it'd be kind of reactionary and petty for Korra to go into Super Freakout mode.  The one thing TOS really stressed was that it's way easier to get Aang the necessary amount of pissed off by fucking with his friends rather than him directly though, so expect the fireworks to start as soon as Mako ends up hanging from a ledge or something.

I can't get over the fact that we get TWO SEASONS of this. Glad Nickelodeon appreciates just what they have, here.

This week's broadcast is a rerun of the first episode, so don't worry about trying to catch it and don't look for a stream on Monday.

Apparently it was already known that the broadcast schedule would be taking a one-week hiatus for Memorial Day weekend.

Jesus Christ.

How do they keep packing in the Holy Shit factor so tightly into the last 10 minutes of each episode?

I could've done without the CIRCUS AFRO CIRCUS AFRO CIRCUS AFRO commercials though.

Meelo is incredible. Weasel-snake is the perfect animal to call Tarrlok.
Car chases
,
police confrontations
, and
master waterbenders
make for excellent action scenes. I'm hoping we see
a spiritual and/or airbending breakthrough
being the key to
Korra's escape from wherever it is Tarrlok is sending her
. What is the connection between
Tarrlok and Yakone
? Was that Tahno at the
anti-curfew protest
?

So good. So damn good.

This show has done everything right. I have literally zero complaints about everything they've done other than the petty "I have to wait a whole week for another?!"
And I'm a guy who complains about anything and everything.
