FF7 can go pound salt. Magus theme goes with everything.

Both strong contenders, but despite my unusual opinion on CT, I have to admit its soundtrack is cakes and pies all the way through, while my favorite bits of FF7's are the moodier moments.

Also, Still More Fighting is hard to sing along to.

Yes, because if something is too technically complex it is automatically an inferior product, right? Singability is not a factor of quality.

This is a hard, hard pick. But Still More Fighting has a sort of tension about it that the other lacks while still conveying a similar sense of desperation.

Are we supposed to be judging these songs in a vacuum, or is the intent to consider them in their native context? Not that it changes my answer in this round. Still More Fighting is pretty rockin', but Magus' Theme is more dramatic and it also carries a strong sense of the character it belongs to.

I'd say the fairest way to judge these is in a vacuum, since nobody (probably) has played all of the games these songs came from.

And even if they did, it still makes more sense to me to vote for the best song based on the song itself, not the trappings that went with it.

FF7's theme is a nice example of solid Uematsu rock, with an energetic beat and that organ going off all over the place.

But Magus's theme has so much more going for it. The slow build at the beginning into the sudden burst of trumpets, the technically impressive use of the SNES's capabilities, mixing in those weird wailing/vocal bits. I think overall it's both a more emotional song and a more interesting one.

Magus for this round.

Magus leads 14-4. I'll update the poll before I go to bed.

Our second match:

Lufia 2: Sinistral battle theme

vs

Chrono Cross OST - Prisoners of Fate

Prisoners of Fate is more of a sad theme, really, but CC makes it work as a tragic boss theme. Sinistral is, of course, my own personal favorite that started this whole thing. Both are excellent tracks.

Sinistral is nice, but it's no "killing your father's best friend / best friend's father who is only fighting you because everything he had was lost after saving your life as a child" theme.

Friday just said to judge them in a vacuum, and we're judging them as individual pieces of music anyway! The context of the fight itself is what makes the theme fit. Without it, it's just another slow piece of orchestral music. As a piece of boss music, it is incredibly inferior. To be honest, I'm confused how Prisoners of Fate got this far.

Singability is not a factor of quality.

That's true. Not in an objective, absolute sense, anyway. However, from where I'm sitting, if it's not there it's not a con, but if it's there it's certainly a pro. Among many potential others. The "automatically an inferior product" verbiage is uncalled for. Heck, I nominated the Kirby's Adventure final battle, and I've been failing to sing that for almost 20 years, so it's not like it's a deal breaker.

If we're judging pieces by their emotional connection to the source material, then Prisoners of Fate brings up memories of permanent confusion and apathy.

:nyoro~n: Come to think of it, if we're judging in a vaccuum (which is fine by me), I'd like to request Betrayal be taken out instead of Ushiwaka's Dance if it ain't too presumptuous of me to ask such a thing, because it's got like zero chance. It's pretty much all emotional context.

Whoa whoa whoa NO. There's more than enough emotional weight in that track to carry it outside of the scene that it's in.

Hmm, I remain unconvinced at this time, but I suppose it's worth seeing what democracy makes of your point then. As skeptical as I am, I certainly would like you to be correct!

The only thing trying this competition "in a vaccuum" will do is suck worse than this pun.

Yeah, there's always subjectiveness to stuff like this, but no one can really name a boss song that sticks out from a completely boring or average fight. We all heard these songs in the same situations and so have the same emotional call backs when we hear them(of course with shades of perspective) Also, as shown already they don't all work in every situation.

Odds are super low that anyone here will hear a song and think "wow, if that was playing (this fight) would have been way better!" And I would be amazed if anyone votes for a song they don't recognize over one they do.

Prisoners of Fate is a way better song. The Mystic Quest song in this bracket is better than that Lufia song. (That is not a dig. Ok, it is)
