Really really hard.

It's actually hard for me to listen to FF6 music nowadays. I listened to it almost religiously when I was a kid, to the point where it now occupies a totally different part of my mind. It's actually hard to sit down and appreciate it beyond some kind of abstract, like I've just put it on this higher mental tier.

So Dancing Mad doesn't excite me as much as Meridian Dance, like Lyrai said. But it has Kefka's lietmotif in it and I fucking love lietmotifs.

At the same time though, I've always loved just how well Meridian Dance itself matches the rhythm of the fight, how the little pause segment before it goes into the second half of the melody matches up with the casting of Mana Sword if you time it just right....

Fuck it, I'm voting for Meridian Dance

It seems wrong to vote for eliminating Dancing Mad in the first round. Very, very wrong. It's dark, ominous, and brooding in all of the best ways. But man, it just cannot compete with the sheer kinetic force and variety of Meridian Dance. The trill at the opening quickly building up to crash cymbals and a full stop, indicating respect, apprehension, and awe, into a completely boss bass line under long brass notes that implies grim determination, to the bridge beginning at :55 that evokes hope and conviction. And to top it all off, you wouldn't think it would loop well in full with that opening but it pulls off even *that.*

I really regret voting against Dancing Mad in round 1, but I'll be damned if this isn't an easy pick.

I'd have voted for the full 18-minute Dancing Mad suite, but the final movement is my least favorite part of it. It'd be a different matter if the toccata had been the nomination.

I'm going to say fuck it and vote for Dancing Mad in it's entirety because its entirety is what makes it so fantastic.

Also, a slightly abridged orchestral version matched up exactly to the time from start to finish that it took us to complete our first Madness of Deathwing kill.

Plus, Oracle is way, way better than Meridian Dance.

Ah, now here's something I was worried about: mixing up boss themes with final boss themes.  Final boss themes by nature are kind of a different beast because they're meant to represent the game's climax - its highest point of tension.  The purpose and tone of the final boss theme should always be a lot different than just "a boss" or "a really big boss".

So what we have here are two tunes that could go either way in a vacuum (I'd probably still vote Dancing Mad, really), but as final boss themes Meridian Dance always kind of bothered me because it sounds more like a mid-boss theme than a final boss theme.  It lacks finality.  The Mana Beast (spoilers!) ends up seeming like a mere obstacle on the way to your final fight with -- well everyone else is dead by that point, but you get the idea.  It probably doesn't help that the final boss itself is mostly a Space Flea.  I think Square even noticed it too, which is why they used a similar-sounding theme for Seiken Densetsu 3's first boss.

Sufficed to say, Dancing Mad does not have this problem.

I think Dancing Mad is better. I enjoy listening to Meridian Beast more. I think this means my brain works, I just have bad taste.

The entire Dancing Mad suite could probaly be impoved by cutting out the second and third movements entirely (as would the accompanying battle), but then it wouldn't be as memorable.  See also: One-Winged Angel and the Tokyo Soupcanphonic Choir.

The Black Mages version is rather improved in that regard!  Trims it to 12 minutes, retains all of the potency.

Also come on it's Dancing Fucking Mad.  If this gets eliminated, it should be in the final round.

I prefer the SNES version of Hero's Challenge, but that's good too.

Not dead, but rather was out of town for a day and came back to discover my internet was out.

Anyway! Sorry about the delay.

Dragon God wins out over Hero's Challenge, much to my dismay. But such is life.

Final Fantasy 4's Boss is pretty great. But Sonic 3's boss theme is *funky as shit.*

Both of these are fantastic; among my favorites. I could easily go either way depending on my mood, but right now I have to give it to FF4. FICKLE

Based on the highly scientific method of watching my avatar dance to both songs, I have picked SONIC 3

But seriously, I've always loved how ridiculously ominous that track is for a sonic game
