Yep, here we go again.

A day where R2 started another Let's Play.

It says Press Start, so I do. Our scene opens...

With a snow-covered schoolyard, children playing. A whistle blows!

The children line up!

These bullies are just full of cutting remarks, but to be fair, if you bring a teddy bear to grade school you're kind of asking for it.

A valiant defender of the weak and easily-targeted steps forth!

This girl immediately chooses words that introduce her as a precocious brat.

I'll show you.

This is the first ingame tutorial, but we can skip it. The teacher and Ritz go through a quick explanation of turns, moving around the map, and actions you can take. Since this is a snowball fight, the only option is to huck a snowball at someone, but whaddyagonnado.

The bullies, not surprisingly, target Mewt.

Exclusively.

The battle ends when Mewt is reduced, one 1-HP snowball at a time, to a single remaining hit point.

We're taken to a cutscene, allowing everyone to move around.

(To hurry things along, so were we. In fact, Ritz was the one who threw the game-ending snowball.)

Well maybe if you were trying to hide that you dye your hair you could have chosen a color a little more natural than bright pink.

Ritz charges!

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT INFODUMP CONTINUES

Fun fact in Nintendo-censorship: in the Japanese version this guy was falling-down drunk, not just apologizing profusely.

Yeah, anyone who even knows that guy should be embarrassed. Could you imagine being related to him? GAWD, I'd just DIE.

That sound you hear is the fourth wall shattering.

The schoolyard is transformed into some sort of barren scrubland, with some sort of red winged thing flying above it.

The city streets transform...

Even the people transform!

And we fade out, everything different than it was...

Marche, entranced by his surroundings, bumped into someone.

Some platemail-clad guy in on a giant equally-clad chicken appears out of nowhere!

B... but I'm far too young to get married!

The lizard bangaa, enraged at R2 for his rudeness, slashes the crap out of the R2 moogle!

:slow:

hehe called on it

The first Final Fantasy Tactics game was full of actual battles that just happened to be in a turn-based abstraction. In this case you actually have turns, and your opponents apparently just stand around waiting for you to get off your ass when it's your turn and punch them.

And so we engage for a bit!

R2 knocks out the bangaa, and the judge throws a bunch of sparkly things at him!

I get a JP! Presumably they are accrued and spent far more slowly than in the first game. That's Advanced!

Oh, JP is "judge points" in this game, not "job points". Yet another tutorial explains that JP let you use combos in battle, and you get them by making attacks that KO opponents.

Judges are not part of the landscape. They'll move around sometimes.

This little guy takes a break from ineffectively hitting things with a stick...

...to blast him with lightning instead. Why weren't you doing that all along?!

So the bangaa whips out a bottle and chugs it!

I know that exclamation balloon anywhere! The Judge is about to challenge this guy to a Pokemon battle!

"Confused" being a moogle euphemism for "an idiot".

An idiot, and unintentionally culturally insensitive!

"Are you dense? This is the first game that has Bangaa in it. They didn't appear in-franchise until after this game."

The shattered remains of the fourth wall are now ground up and scattered to the wind.

"Kupo" in this case being a euphemism for "brain-addled".

Okay, so after all of that TALK TALK TALK TALK TALK brief interactive sequence TALK TALK TALK TALK TALK we've reached the first bit of audience participation! Ladies and gentlemen of the Brontoforumus, what do I name my clan?

Whatever it is will go after "Clan" for the rest of the game, so I usually named them "Destine".

1) They did a really good job of making an awesome setting then taking it away. Hope we see more of the "real world".

2) Can you attack a judge?

While I really like this one, there is a nine-character limit!

1) Nope. We're in the game, man. We're in Final Fantasy!

2) Nope. Judges cannot be targeted and don't get hit by any attacks. It's vaguely possible to maneuver around them and use them for cover (say, facing away from them in an adjacent panel to prevent attacks from behind), but they usually move away from any units on the battlefield whenever they get a turn.
