I'll Rape Japan! Let's Play Sengoku Rance!

Howdy! I feel like LPing, so here we go. Sengoku Rance is a Hentai Visual Novel by guys who really want to make good strategy games but I guess demand the porn stay in as part of their artistic integrity? Or perhaps they are Hentai VN devs who accidentally a great strategy game? Who knows, really, but the game is very great fun in the same genre as say, Final Fantasy Tactics. It's surprisingly deep, has an incredibly amount of branching sub-stories and multiple events, has NetHack levels of "The Devs Thought Of Everything" for your decisions, and is not only a really fun game, it encourages you to replay it up to 20+ times by the sheer 12th Dimensional Chess of it's replay values, including 6 unique story paths, a stand-alone pure strategy game mode that allows you to use any of the 15+ Armies, and a completionist dictionary!

But the game is very Japan, very Visual Novel, and did I mention very Hentai? The protagonist is a serial rapist with a heart of gold and if you become interested in trying the game keep in mind that a scene change to an erect dick and a wet pussy without warning is possible. For the sake of this LP, I'm just going to summarize any H scenes if it's relevant to the plot or anything. Or really damn funny. If you gotta have your hentai, it's free to download and play. Or I dunno, type Danbooru into Google. I assume you're on the internet if you can read this.

4chan's /vg/ FAQ contains a good number of ways to download the game and instructions for installing it, which is a painless process. I used DaemonTools and Microsoft's AppLocale myself.

One last note is that this will be my Second Playthrough, or that I've beaten the game before. This unlocks a lot of things for a standard playthrough, most notably the ability to recruit several commanders who were impossible to recruit on any first playthrough. I'll note any significant differences when it matters, assuming I notice them myself! This also means I have a great deal of foresight, the sort you only get by restarting the game three times after getting reamed ferociously by the consequences of my own mistakes, so I'll be doing some planned actions that you wouldn't get on a blind playthrough. I'll also be shooting for some of the harder challenges.

If you're interested in trying the game, I recommend you dive right in yourself and come back after a few *PLOT* associated game overs, as the element of surprise is really great.

Rance is the hero! He uses his hyper-weapon to dispense imperial juice. He also fights monsters and men with a sword. As the main character his unit is pretty fantastic. His stats in fighting are good too.



Sill is his sidekickfriend slave. She assists Rance and generally won't actually fight, but is still incredibly useful.



Chaos is a man who became a magical sword to fight demons!



Nobunaga Oda is a chill dude with a monkey on his shoulder. Oh, right, and the Ruling Lord of Oda, our home nation.



Kouhime Oda is his little sister.



The first of many alternative history interpretations, Ranmaru is a very stoic lady instead of a very feminine man. The first of the traditional "Good Starting Unit that becomes Great if you stick with them," Ranmaru is a Warrior suited towards Offense.



Shibata Katsuie is a really enthusiastic guy! Ranmaru's buddy and the other Good Starting Unit, he's a Foot Soldier suited towards Defense.

There's also three generic starting commanders and nobody cares about them.



Maybe you thought I was kidding about 12 Dimensional Replay Chess. Since this is my second playthrough, I've earned a few points! And I mean a few, as 5 is a "Gimme" for being lousy enough to end the game with a score of 0. Fortunately, the score bit is optional, and here's why! You can restart the game with dozens of passive bonuses, including rare items, characters that conflict directly with the game's lore, Optional Story Paths(including a plot-breaker), and so on.

I only have 5 points, so I'm going to grab the Golden Panda Statue for +2 Attack and the Working Bee for some very specialized unit tweaking later. I'll get back to it when it matters. With 5 Points, I could grab a truly game-breaking item that would trivialize my replay, but, well... let's keep things interesting.

And just to keep things doubly interesting, I'm moving from Normal to Hard difficulty!

5 AM. In the midst of heavy fog, there are many men. Screams and yells. Sounds of armshields and tassets clashing. Sounds of feet stomping on the ground. The sounds of the battlefield--

Tension rises within the center of the encampment, yet a man is sitting with leisure unsuited for this scene. In constrast, the small girl next to him looks busy.



Ranmaru: May I?

Nobunaga: Yes. What is it, Ran?

Ranmaru: The scouts have returned. Kubota Hougen's army has been deployed. They have about 800 men. Kubota Azuki and Hira Munamoto's armies are already deployed to our front.

Nobunaga: I see. They must be serious.

Ranmaru: They wouldn't go this far unless they were serious.

Nobunaga: Yes... you're right.







Rance: They're good. They're more trained than I thought they would be.

Nobunaga: Well, Japan is in an age of war. Of course we're prepared.

Rance: But you guys have such light-weight protection. is it any good?





Nobunaga: But what should we do if we lose?

Hmmm. Screen-capping each handy-dandy summary text, or typing out lines? I'll have to fine-tune it as I go, particularly as the CTRL key seems to advance text automatically! But that's the intro exposition done.



Fighting! Into the meat of the game that isn't sticking your meat in, combat plays out like a turn-based battle with room for 6 units on each side and two rows, front and back. Melee guys can't rush the back until the enemy's front row is dead, Ranged guys can generally shoot where they please.

Katsuie and Maeda(Generic Foot Soldier) start with Guard meter, which gives them a 50% chance to intercept any enemy attack against the row they are in. Maeda can't attack from the back because Foot Soldiers are melee only, but he will intercept arrows that attempt to hit Akechi Mitsu(Generic Tactician.) Each turn, Foot Soldiers can melee(and forfeit their accumulated guard meter), or use Ally Guard to reinforce it and this is one of the most important and basic elements of fighting.

Rance and Ranmaru are Warriors and will hit stuff until it dies, and Akechi is a Tactician, which is why we have some colored arrows. Maeda and Ranmaru have purple +intelligence, Rance has a green +Speed and Katsuie has a red +attack! Tactician buffs are random, but multiple Tacticians stack how many starting buffs you get, and can add more on the fly. They provide support fire with arrows.

That horizontal line of names in the middle is turn order, the bottom is our overall stats and not really relevant to combat, and the middle vertical line is time. Yup, you have to win combat in so many turns, to prevent you from stacking 5 Foot Soldiers and 1 Archer and being a cheese-dick. This becomes very pressing when the enemy actually does that due to the vertical bar at the top, which determines who wins an engagement!

Unless you just murder the entire enemy side, of course. But damage done and taken is calculated on the fly with bonuses for entire units killed, so it's possible to fight to a Draw and still win. Or lose horribly due to your shitty comp that did no damage!

As the tutorial combat, this battle mostly consists of me having Rance, Ranmaru and Katsuie slam dunk melee the enemy until they're annihilated.



Every melee unit automatically counter attacks when attacked by another melee unit, though much like Advance Wars, Alpha Strikes rule. So Ranmaru loses 3 men annihilating 130. If that enemy had survived with something like 10/130 men, they would dramatically lose offensive power, as damage is based on how many guys you have to strike.

Note that having Rance attack the enemy Foot Soldier caused them to lose 40% of their Guard meter, meaning that Foot Soldiers aren't invulnerable. They're just a colossal pain in the ass if you don't plan for them!



Did I mention Rance's unit owns? His starting stats are great, he always has Chaos equipped as an item for +20% damage, and he has Sill as a sub-commander. She'll automagically heal Rance's unit everytime he attacks.

If Rance's unit is ever defeated, he'll die and Game Over, so on tougher battles it'd be necessary for Katsuie to play interception. On this turkey shoot he can help me execute the Oda traitors that much faster!

Last and most important bit, those white and red flags are Action Points. More complicated attacks can consume more Action Flags, and a unit that taps out just stands there for the rest of the fight. Can be useful if a Foot Soldier stacks his guard to 300% and just spends the rest of the battle on interception, can suck shit if you blow your load early. Also if you have Rance use his special attack too soon and be unable to deal multiple melees.

One thing I intend to do with this LP is share all the stuff I learned the only way you can: dying horribly and restarting.

In fact if something's important I'll put a little picture next to it. Game-defining hints that the game won't actually tell you in-game!

Supposedly the Rance series is supposed to be some wacky take on Ys featuring Adol as a serial rapist, but I never quite figured out the connection.  I don't know as much about it as you people probably assume but as far as I can tell it's got one of those "It's how you say hello" vibes to it.

3G is the Youkai Bureaucrat of the Oda household. Or basically he does all the boring stuff you'd associate with running an actual nation that isn't fighting battles or banging ladies.

Youkai is a term for Touhou Girls that are bad guys. I mean, Youkai are mythical Japanese beings that make up most of their otherworldy stories of mischevous spirits or demons or ghosts! As per alternate Japan here, they just sort of wander around as another class of person if they're not the RAH RAH EAT HUMANS type.







And Rance almost literally walks into the Commander position of a Japanese army. Perhaps... a dude can be too chill, Nobunaga?

Ah, I'm allowed to play the game now! Every turn we'll get gold based on the land we own(National Power) vs our Army's Size(Cost) and we currently have Two Action Fans, letting us do two things.

As you can see, there's quite a bit more going on than the usual "talk to somebody until I get to make a 2 or 3 option choice." Our starting country of Oda is in the middle of Japan and that gives us the freedom to start our conquest in a huge number of ways. There are also a great deal of behind-the-scenes mechanics that won't make any sense yet, but will all the same viciously destroy you the first time you play the game. Fun!

Development is what a good lord should do. You task your dudes to improve your land! This improves National power, as noted in the Cost/Power meter at the bottom. More power is more gold per turn and the ability to command bigger armies.

National Power is incredibly more important than it sounds. It's a behind the scenes number that affects certain important RNGs that determine whether or not units will automatically approach and join your army, or Hell, even if such a thing is possible! If you're always riding the cap of your National Power, you'll just flat out miss opportunities to recruit unique units forever. Ideally you should always have at least 10 spare national power, and preferably 20 or more. Not practical to do at the start of the game, but a good standard all the same.

Prepare for Next Battle is a boring bit of stat boosting. It also only affects the land you improve, so you either want to pump it up for a particularly troublesome enemy territory or for a single choke-point bit of land that is constantly assaulted. I've never used it much myself.

Search for Dungeon will produce a little discovery cutscene if successful and allow us to begin fighting monsters in an even more traditional RPG style, boiling our units down to their solo Commanders vs Monsters for loot as an adventuring party.

The Botan Hunt will give us a spontaneous battle in the same sort of Party vs Monsters system against angry little pigs. I don't need the gold that badly to waste precious turns doing so, so we'll skip that probably forever. There's an Easter Egg associated with it, though!

Resting is what it sounds like. If you're hard up for army repairs, you can trade actions for heals. Terribly not worth it unless you plan around it. The only real advantage is that it's free, as you can usually just replenish your army by throwing gold at it.

The other options are to introduce ourselves to the Head Warden of our Prison and an important gameplay element, or to play a Dating Sim Lite and talk to our unique NPCs to prove that we like them. Or in the case of Kouhime and Sill, just to talk to them for the fun of it and for extra cutscenes! In general the purple ??? tag indicates a cut-scene is available, otherwise you get generic filler, like if we talked to Katsuie this turn.

You're not allowed to start trouble and declare war on the first turn, so I'll cap off for now by noting the window in the bottom right corner. Our one territory consists of four zones, and if we were under attack we'd lose the game if we fail to defend our final Castle zone. Likewise, enemy territories will require multiple battles to seize full control of, and we'll have to prevent them from pushing us back.

And since I forgot it, the Score is mostly cosmetic. You'll lose one point per turn, you get extra points for performing bonus deeds(kill super hard optinal bosses, find hidden easter egg treasures, clear the Dating Sim elements of unique NPCs, etc) and in general it rates how well you're doing because the faster you beat the game, the better you're doing. But the only benefit of a higher score is bonuses in your next playthrough.



My translation patch isn't perfect, but the only bits it didn't translate are intuitive to figure out so who cares. Like I said, my score total is shown on the map despite being a PQO here, and I know I lose one a turn.

What are Gourds? They're a plot element and a foresight thing I'll mention later.

If you ever forget what you're doing, Current Status will summarize the most important bits, from "Do This Or Die Right Now" to "You can get a unique cutscene with this NPC!" Very handy! And since I won't open and screen-cap it, let me add that the save system is really nice: it lets you label each save with comments up to 360 characters long!



Chaos is a Sword, so he's permanently held by Rance as an item. But he's a great Sword, so it's hard to complain.



These are the two bonus items I chose for New Game+. The Golden Bear Statue has the ... Power (of a) Golden Bear! I'll pass it to Ranmaru for now. The Bee? It's a secret, I'm not twinking anybody I currently have with it!



Army Management is super important and separate from the mini-Civ/Dating elements of the game. As a matter of convenience, you can throw gold at every unit to heal it to full. Or do it individually.



Let's make like R^2 and discuss unit types more in-depth like!

Warriors or Busihido are Offensive Melee Units. Their attack is better by default and they can learn unique attacking options, such as Attacking and Denying the enemy their Counter-Attack or Attacking with Bravado that Influences the Battle Meter. By default, they can hit shit or Standby(wait and not forfeit an Action Flag.) Warriors benefit immensely from attacking first and pair well with Foot Soldiers who can protect them and preserve their HP for the best Alpha Strikes.

Rance's starting stats of 3 Actions, 5 Attack, 4 Defense, 5 Intelligence, 4 Speed make him above average and he has several story prompts to boost them further. Stats max at 9 and with his story boosts it's ridiculously easy to get him at a 7 or better in everything.

Search, Negotiation and Construction are Civilization-style stats! Construction is used for Development and Battle-ground Prep, so having Bureaucrat units around that don't fight is a good idea. But only about two of them, and definitely no more than five, which is the cap of guys you can send to do business dealings anyway.

Negotiation is mostly used to Declare War or make enemy countries Surrender. Since we're conquering Japan there isn't much room for allies, though there are some unique situations that you can find if you really look.

Search is Exploration and related to finding Dungeons, Treasure, and the occasional important Plot element. Also Scouting enemy armies, but that tends to be trivially easy.

Cost is what the unit runs against your National Power for existing. Some units are fancier than others and Costs increase as your Max HP increases. But Max HP or Troop Size boosts all of your stats and primarily your attack, so it's worth it to boost Rance from 150 dudes to 200 dudes for now, after we heal everybody to full. Rance is terrible at actual ruling but fantastic at fighting. Fortunately, we have goons to do boring shit for us.

You have options to Replenish(Heal up to your Max HP), Recruit(Increase Max HP, costs increase about every 250 guys), and to Dismiss(decrease Max HP, generally don't do this.) Upper Limit rises naturally so don't worry about it. In the upper left corner, Health + Level are listed. Those are dungeon stats! And Rance has Auto Heal(Sill), which is Sill's healing bonus I mentioned earlier, giving Rance a starting Passive. Most other units will have to earn these by Dating Sim elements.



Ranmaru's Attack 6 becomes Attack 8 with the Golden Bear Statue, and with Def 4, Int 7 and Spd 6 her stats are awesome. Like Rance, she sucks at anything but Fighting. At the top of her info box here is her Emotion Gauge, or how she feels about Rance. It's the dating sim element and we improve it by talking to her from the map screen or giving her gifts, but we haven't found any gifts yet!



Katsuie has 4 Actions, which is fantastic, and 4 Atk, 7 Def, 6 Int, 4 Spd and bad Civ-stats. So he's awesome at taking damage, deals respectable damage, and can attack or stack his guard stack frequently. Intelligence as you'd imagine is a caster stat, but it also provides defense against magical damage, so it never hurts to have.

Foot Soldiers are the Defensive line of almost every army in the game. They can deal average damage and can fortify their Defense. They begin every battle with 50% Guard Meter, which is a 50% chance to intercept any attack intended for somebody in their vertical row... but it also halves any physical damage they'd take! Using Ally Guard will increase the Guard Meter by 80% or better depending on the Commander and passives, and once you're over 100% Guard you'll always intercept. Taking damage reduces Guard Meter by 40%. Foot Soldiers cannot attack from the back row, but can Guard against Ranged Attacks from Archers and the like all the same.

Foot Soldiers can learn unique attacks as well, or better their Guard Abilities, such as starting battle with 100% Meter instead of 50%, gaining 150%+ Guard Meter per Fortify, or the ability to All Guard both rows.

You will horribly lose battles if you don't learn to appreciate about 3-4 good Foot Soldier units. Note that to encourage you to get those boys killed, Foot Soldiers can be replenished dirt cheap at 1 gold a pop compared to 4 for Warriors!



With 4s in every stat, Maeda Toshiie is basically a meat shield to fill out your ranks in the early game. 4 Negotiate and 3 Construction make him a good starting bureaucrat, though.



Akechi Mitsuhide is your starter Tactician and has a mere 2 Action Flags and 4/3s in every stat, making him bad at fiting. With 6 Negotiate, 4 Search and 4 Construction he's awesome at running the state for the first half of the game.

Tacticians attack like Archers, but are responsible for Buffs and Debuffs. Any Buffed(Colored Arrow) stat is increased by 50% in battle, and Tacticians randomly give buffs if they're included in the unit, about 4 with possibly more due to better Intelligence scores. Battle Strategy will give additional buffs(2-4) and Remove Status will remove Enemy Buffs from 2 random units(but only units that have buffs, so it won't dumb-fire and hit unbuffed units if an Enemy with a buff exists.) They deal less damage than actual Archers but can still do respectable ranged damage if their Stack size is kept up.



Niwa Nagahide is straight 4s across the boards, with straight 3s for bureaucracy. What makes him stand out is that his starting stack size is huge at 450, thus making him solid Archer support. He also begins the game with the passive Defeated Warrior Hunt, which means that units he damages/defeats are more likely to be captured in battle.

Archers are Ranged Damage Dealers best suited to sitting in the back row and focusing down priority targets, provided enemy Foot Soldiers aren't around to intercept. They deal better than average damage like Warriors, especially compared to other Range Units, but they cannot counter-attack. They can learn specialized firing patterns that deal extra damage to specific units.

Oh, it's a little cutscene!






Katsuie loves little girls. But he never actually loves them directly, so he's just a big, goofy guy, I guess! One of his in-battle shouts is "All elementary school girls, watch my fight!"



If there's an option for killing dudes I've never found it, which is a shame because I've met a few assholes worth decapitating!



I'll go more in-depth later, but when you defeat a unit in combat there's a random chance to capture it. Some units are tagged to be immune to this and the only way to find out is prior knowledge or save-scumming! Hoo-ray!

Sengoku Rance OST - My Glourious Days

My Glorious Days is Rance's theme and it plays whenever he bangs a lady for reasons that should be obvious.

In which we put aside all this silly Dating Sim, Cute Story, and Civilization-Lite elements and jack off. Don't click on no links while at the office or nothin'!

Kouhime shows us our house, which will be a minor gameplay element and it... SHUT UP AND GET TO THE PORN!

The hentai scenes tend to be hilarious but way too long and a slog to read through, so again we're sticking to the highlights.



Rance's hidden power source is Satisfaction, primarily gained by fucking women. Every 10 Satisfaction points you get a choice of Incredible Army Boosts from a list of about 10+.

Building Satisfaction is super important so conquer land so Rance can rape princesses. Also woo your lady commanders.

Visiting the Dungeon and "Talking" to Sill triggered the purple event tags I mentioned earlier, but they also ate our two Action Flags. Prison is an essential game feature and Satisfaction is important so that's as good a Turn 1 as any.



By default you'll be shown "Enemy Actions" between each turn. It'll show their number of commanders and troops and random generic actions that are sort of funny. I miss the cap here but the Hara House to the south's cute action is "Princess Akihime is buying clothes" or something like that.

Settings has an option for turning this off and I recommend you do so as soon as the actions stop being cute and waiting for 6+ nations to do them becomes tedious. Anything actually important that happens will still be shown to you and the Commander/Troop numbers are useless as measures of actual enemy strength.



Rance starts turn 2 determined to invade an enemy country. Actually important because if you turtle up and don't do anything, Rance will become bored and his Satisfaction will begin to drop.

You'll also get run over by an 18-Wheeler Truck named PLOT.

There is no set path to victory. If you want to devour the middle and hedge Japan in half, you can do that. You can snake your way across the whole of Japan like a schizo. You can start with the East or the West and just grab an entire half of the country. But for now, we're adjacent to and can only immediately attack four houses.

I'm going to start discussing things that are foresight related so again if you want to try this game, I recommend you go in blind.



Very easy to defeat and no Gourd. However, if you defeat them too fast, Iga House will freak out and declare war on you. I believe the limit is to not fully conquer Hara House before Turn 20. Hara House is good for declaring war and then conquering every territory but their castle so you can farm their suffering, gahahahaha.



With two territories and a larger army, it's easy to become intimidated by them as a newbie. Another reason to turn off the between-turns ticker. However, Ashikaga House is staffed by losers and due to an upcoming event, we won't declare war on them even though they have a lot of territory to take and are easy to stomp and farm as well. They possess a Gourd, which will be important later for whether or not we fully conquer them as fast as we can.



We can't actually declare war on Iga yet! The Ninja Nation, Iga is ridiculously easy to defeat due to the limitations of Ninja units and hilariously bad army composition, but they have a unique commander who can actually fight and their army stacks aren't really small freebies like Hara or Ashikaga. Iga House also has a gourd so it can be detrimental to you to immediately devour all of your closest neighbors. You can still plan around it, though!



We also can't declare war on Tokugawa yet, but that's fine because they are an above-average small nation. Their army has no glaring flaws and their unique commanders are bad motherfuckers. No Gourd means we'll want to defeat them soon, and remember that we can capture those bad motherfuckers.

I'm going to declare war on Hara House instead of Ashikaga House due to a random event tag that should come up within the next 5 turns. Declaring War requires appropriate Negotiation and an Action Flag. Makes me wonder why it's harder to declare war on some nations than others. If I send Rance with his 1 Negotiate, does he just get confused or rebuked and come back sulking? I don't think we'd really respect diplomatic immunities and like, not storm into their land... oh well. Gives Akechi something to do.
