I don't usually buy music (draw your own conclusions) but when I do, I usually buy it from Amazon because they offer a DRM-free MP3 download option.

iTunes does too.  In this case it's not the DRM that's the problem, it's that your library is tied to an iTunes account.  Strictly speaking, you could log in under the account you purchased from, download all your music, then switch back to the other account and import all those tracks -- it's just that that's a pain in the ass for a variety of reasons.

The difference between Amazon and iTunes in this case isn't DRM -- it's that Amazon is a website where you download music and iTunes is a standalone application for both downloading and playing music.

(See also: the recent whine-fest by the RIAA that searching for "[artist name] [track name]" is likelier to produce pirate sites than an iTunes page.  That's not Google's fault, you idiots, it's Apple's; you can't blame Google for only indexing actual websites and not external proprietary indices.)

Google is killing Google Reader.

Come down to it, I'd be thrilled if somebody besides Google stepped in to keep track of every fucking article I'm reading on the Internet, because Google.  But I very much like being able to sync my feeds across all my various devices.

There are a few alternatives. NewsBlur, NetVibes and The Old Reader, which is a copy of the old style of Google Reader, back when it had social components.

Naturally, though, the Google Reader news has caused all of these services to be crushed by traffic as people migrate away, making them kind of laggy.

NewsBlur has responded by disabling free accounts, though the premium is $1 a month. Haven't tried it yet because of the signup, but it sort of has a demo mode that didn't work when I tried it. Looks promising though. May be in unknown state of up or down.

NetVibes seems to mostly be trying to be a iGoogle replacement, which may or may not work out depending on how much you want a Dashboard replacement. Initial impressions are that it kind of sucks. Also laggy because of people.

Haven't tried Old Reader, but will try and dive in today.

I think OwnCloud has some RSS support too; since I'm already running an OwnCloud server I should probably look into it.

My car (motorbike) insurance company was bought out. Annual premium just went from $638 to $836. Second year in a row that my premiums have been raised by $200/25% and the second year in a row that I have to shop around for a new insurer.

::(:

EDIT: I have a clean record, a low-risk bike, and I'm 34 now, so there's no obvious issue on my part.

High-risk bike is a crotch rocket, also I think high-risk accounts for power to weight ratio too so some big bikes are considered high-risk due to engine power.

To update my story from the other day, the problem mysteriously resolved itself, and now I can't even get the "you can't associate a second ID with this device for x days" message to appear. I am going to quietly pretend this never happened until I bumble into a similar issue five years from now and fly completely off the handle.

How could there possibly not be a good free version of ancestry.com at this point?

My phone went through the laundry last night. I don't have pocket Internet anymore.

Now if it's the middle of the day and a trivia question comes up, or I think of something I'd like to learn more about... oh well.
