Super Mafia Bros.
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:03:41 PM »

So this here's a relatively vanilla game of mafia/werewolf that will be good as a way to wind down after VvW X ends (I will start this game as soon as that one ends).

Bowser has kidnapped the princess! To rescue her, Mario and Luigi have infiltrated the Koopa Troop wearing ridiculous disguises that successfully fool everybody.

Every day, by popular vote, one player is hauled off and subjected to all the comforts of the brig, removing them from the game (functionally a lynch, but the Koopa Troop doesn't execute soldiers merely on the suspicion of espionage). Every night, the Mario Brothers select a player and stomp on him and then see if the princess was in that particular castle.

One player is Bowser. All members of the Koopa Troop start the game knowing Bowser's identity, but the Mario Brothers do not. Bowser can be voted for but not incarcerated. Bowser has the princess; if the Mario Brothers target Bowser at night, they defeat him, save the princess, and win the game. If both Mario and Luigi are arrested, they lose and the Koopa Troop wins.

No matter how many players sign up, there will never be more than two Mario Brothers.

Who is interested?

I'm always up for an experimental game.

It's about time we had a more vanilla side-game, imo. In.

Is there no private communication in this game?  All of the Koopa Troop could just PM Bowser on Day 1 and they'd immediately have a bloc.

Ooh, good point. I'm going to say that there is no communication out-of-thread except between the Brothers.

Here's an interesting further twist: how would it be if Bowser started the game knowing the identities of both Mario Brothers? I think the main idea I'm trying to explore here is that knowledge can be dangerous.

I think in that case having only two brothers might make it a little flukey, though. As soon as the Koopas stumble on either brother, the game would be over. A third player on their team - Yoshi or Toad or Wario I guess - might even things out. It's an interesting experiment either way.

What happens if Bowser is imprisoned? Or are we just assuming that no Koopa Troop would collectively allow that to happen?

The game ends immediately in Mario Brother victory.

From your OP, you said that he could be voted for but not imprisoned.

He's like the King piece in chess. The game ends before he can be captured.

I just ran this game on another board. It had 21 players and the Mario Brothers won on the second night after taking one casualty. I'm still not sure what that means, though they like the way every player always has a secret and it rewards playing along with other players' strategies without private coordination. I'm proposing some modifications. Tell me your thoughts about any of these:

1) Bowser knows who Mario is, but not Luigi, because Luigi is a master of disguise
2) One Koopa can investigate players at night, and Bowser knows who that Koopa is
3) Nobody is ever removed from play; instead, day votes reveal roles and night actions have no public effect

That third one changes the game quite dramatically. Might take care of some of the problems Mafia traditionally has, like player boredom, though. Or it might make them worse.

I'll send role PMs out tomorrow night, and make a new thread at that time. Any last-minute signups, as well as further thoughts about rule variants, are welcome here until that time.
