The problem with this is that I read way too much terrible FF2/4 fanfic in the 90s and this is creating all sorts of extra disturbing "ships".

In FF4DS, the augments were a pretty fun addition, if stupid to get, if only because Cecil spent most of the game kicking, Kain spent it Crying and Blessing, Rosa would Dualcast the shit out of everything, Rydia...well, Black Magic & Summon didn't need any help, and Edge had Phoenix so that he was useful when he died, at least.

Nah, man, you give back-row damage to Edge and Phoenix to KAIN. He's usually the last one standing.

(Anyway I started 6 again and named everybody after Batman.

...okay technically there are three Batgirls.

Kain: I'm afraid it's true. I'm also afraid we're going to have to get rid of the girl.
Cecil: WHAT!?
Kain: We have to obey the king's orders.
Cecil: But she's just a child!
Kain: You intend to defy the king?
Cecil: I refuse to continue any more slaughter in the king's name!

Ha ha, I was totally provoking you into turning traitor! I wasn't actually going to murder this little girl in cold blood, ha ha! I'd never do such a thing.

Cecil: You are?
Kain: I owe the king so much, but I can't disgrace the dragoons.
Cecil: So you'll join me?
Kain: Yes. But we will need allies if we are to oppose the mightiest kingdom in the land. We have to do it for Rosa, as well.

That was an earthquake big enough to permanently alter the world map.

Thankfully, carrying around an unconscious six-year-old doesn't hamper Cecil's ability to fight off monsters.

Summoning a giant phantom beast and cracking the earth asunder really takes it out of a kid.

Girl: ...
Cecil: My name is Cecil. What's yours?
Girl: ...
Cecil: I'm sorry about your mother. I understand if you can't forgive me. Will you at least let me protect you?
Girl: ...

Now Cecil, to be entirely fair? She's actually had a worse day than you.

Eventually Cecil gives up and goes to sleep.

Girl: !
Cecil: Wait!
General: I am here on the king's orders. All summoners from Mist must be annihilated. Hand over the girl, now!
Girl: !
Cecil: Never!
General: Then you shall die!

Four-on-one? That hardly seems fair...

It'd take at least 100 of you to pose a challenge for the mighty Cecil! Ahahahaha!

Anyway, the Soldiers do nothing on their own. When the General shouts for them to attack, all of them attack at once. If the Soldiers are all slain, the General runs away. If the General is killed first, the Soldiers rout and start hitting one another instead.

Almost purely for the EXP I make sure to take out the General.

Yeah, that's good stuff.

Oh, good. It seemed quite possible that she'd lost her voice or something in the shock of losing her mother and hometown, and the strain of summoning well beyond her capacity. But no, a summoner losing her voice from trauma isn't due to happen for another five games or so.

Cecil: Yes. Don't worry about me. I won't let anyone hurt you.
Girl: ...Promise?
Cecil: I promise.
Girl: ...I'm Rydia.

Almost certainly intended to be "Lydia", but the SNES version had some, erm, translation issues that eventually got turned into series legacy. I realized this after a rather embarrassing number of years had passed since I played the game, but now pronounce her name RID-ee-ah instead of RIDE-ee-ah.

Speaking of name pronunciations, the DS version had Cecil's name with the traditional British-English sound: "SESS-il". For Americans used to parsing "SEE-sil", it sparked... well, this is the Internet. It sparked frothing nerdrage fury.

Is it Lyrai? Is it Friday? Is it Meikai because I'm a sucker for a dark-horse candidate? WHO KNOWS HOW THIS STORY WILL END
