Just filthy, filthy sounding bittune music.

A friend of mine described the SNES S-SMP chip as making gentle, sweet love by the fireplace, and the Genesis YM2612 sound chip as fucking in a dive bar unisex bathroom.

You're giving Phil Collins the nod over Peter Gabriel in a Genesis poll?

It always baffles me that they didn't make the Mega Drive sound exactly like the System-16.  I get the feeling that SEGA never intended the system to ever be as popular or long-lived as it was.

<Eazi-F> everything about the genesis was fucking filthy
<Eazi-F> the SNES was a nice date with wine and filet and then a fun tumble under candlelight
<Eazi-F> the genesis was fucking in the nightclub ladies' room

Toxic Seahorse (Genesis Cover)

The Ecchi-Attack guys were going on about this one night and good lord, some of this music. It has this heavy, grungy, shit-caked charm to it. Like if anyone were to ever attempt to do a cover of any Genesis song, it would have to be unrehearsed at a basement show with nonexistent austics, played nightmarishly loud, by savage beasts of men just slamming their guitars like rabid apes.

Say whatever else you want about the MC Kids, but they definitely did wrap up the entire Genesis sound chip experience into one track.

I love how, for it to be true Genesis music, it has to at least KIND of hurt to listen to.

Try playing all of the Genesis songs on this page at the same time to produce the most insane sound ever made.

To be fair, the shittiness of a lot of these tracks is enhanced by the fact that they're clearly being generated by emulators.  I'm fairly sure that there's some sort of magic happening between the digital and the analog components of the YM2612 that can't be directly reproduced, because the alternate explanation that nobody's managed to get it right in 17 years just blows my mind.

But yeah just listen to the hilariously overblown snare drum on this:

OutRun - Magical Sound Shower [Genesis] Music

Versus this (recorded straight from a Model 1, presumably off the headphone port):

SEGA Tunes: OutRun (GenesisMD) Soundtrack

At least the Genesis escaped the fate of early Master System emulators  :scanners:.

That does sound dramatically better.

It's unclear why music quality for the Genesis is usually hideously raw (though there are huge exceptions). I remember hearing the Genesis was notoriously difficult to program for, but that's just hearsay. The most I got on the subject was from later in that same conversation:

Quote
<ssoq_ebuopn> also let me weigh in on megas drive sound and say the main reason so many games had such a raunchy ass sound was because FM synth was and still is a really tricky thing to get right
<ssoq_ebuopn> because while it's incredibly flexible, the relationships between the dozen or so parameters you could set and the actual sound you got out were very unintuitive
<ssoq_ebuopn> abrasive lead guitar and abrasive brass section and abrasive bells were the "i mixed the paints but just ended up with brown" of Fantastic Modulation
