Your game is harder than you think, by a lot

He talks about how he eventually discovered that what he thought was easy was normal, normal was hard, etc.

I basically learned that this go round, except my difficulty sense is so warped that I'm actually TWO steps below. What I think is easy is hard, and normal is very hard/expert.

Still, good advice. There's a story that battletoads is so fuckdamn hard because the devs got so good at it that they kept upping the ante to make it "interesting" to the playerbase. I don't know if that's true, but it's certainly a factor in game design to keep in mind.

I really like following what Greg Street from WoW says on Twitter, because a lot of times you get interesting insights like "We have the data; if you put up a difficulty wall in front of people, they don't rise to the occasion, they just go play something else."

Yep. People are not interested in difficulty, they are interested in fun. There's another quote from someone (I forgot) but it basically states "There's no such thing as a movie that doesn't let me see the ending if I'm not good enough for it."

Some people are interested in difficulty sometimes. Give those people the option to create their own difficulty. Risk/reward systems are good for that, but even just vaguely suggesting at the possibility of a challenge run can open things up tremendously. Nethack-style conducts should be more prevalent in every genre.

Yeah, I'm gonna be making more use of difficulty sliders, that's for sure.

I don't really think the "hard parts give keys which unlocks harder parts" worked, because everyone just cheated the keys in in the end and then skipped past Death to see the final ending.

Death 3.0 will just be in the open for people to attempt if they wish.

Of course, this is all moot, because ek4 will never ever happen in a million fucking years. Sure, right now there's like 3 people posting in the thread, but eventually Niku will lose interest and Bongo and I will have to make the entire game again minus a few short sections from Stush and Kazz and yyler and fuck that.
