Quote
The early AC/AC2 forum moderators at Turbine had a drinking game they’d play sometimes when reading forums late in the evening: drink a shot for anybody who says “slap in the face”, chug if someone says their guild is quitting, and if somebody predicts the game will be dead in a month, the whole room has to drink. I’m sure versions of this game exist at many companies.

holy fucking shit

That would explain why AC2 was so very different from the original.  The first AC team was completely wiped out by alcohol poisoning within 24 hours.

 :behold:

I managed to get a modified Ubuntu 8.04 distro onto my EeePC.  Not being very adept in Linux, and usually used to toying with Ubuntu, I kicked Xandros to the curb.

For me this was an interesting and kinda fun task.

I finally fixed my Kubuntu box.

Now if I can just make it stay in 1440x900 without needing a GUI reboot.

To Do List:

Assessment of what I need, and what I need to learn about my comcast service in order to make a decent MythTV box.

So I'm thinking that if I were to make a program in Jython, making extensive use of the SDL bindings for Java, it'd turn out faster than calling SDL from Python directly (the way Pygame seems to work). I might then also be able to make use of Java's threading model, which is a hell of a lot less gimped than Python's.

But depending on how Jython is implemented, that might be a totally wrong assumption on my part, in which case I'll just end up writing the performance-critical code in Java instead of C. Which, granted, is an improvement, but not enough of one to justify the overhead.

Of course, if I'm doing silly things with the JVM, I might as well just use Clojure or something.

UNRELATED: if this thread gets an icon, I nominate something from this.

Or you know, you could use SDL functions for thread management and skip the Java altogether.  If you're going to use Java you could use Processing.  If you're hellbent on using scripting languages for graphical work, then Good Luck.

I'm just thinking about how it'd work, more than trying to do it.

For SDL bindings, I really prefer good ol' c/c++ over the other stuff.  But then again, you've got to manage your memory, so.

Apparently the latest thing all the cool kids are using is Microsoft's XNA Game Studio. I haven't tried it yet but since it's Microsoft it's well documented and maintained, which is more than can be said for 90% of open source alternatives.

It's intended to be used with Visual Studio C# 2005, which Microsoft has also released for free. You get a lot of the nice object-oriented memory-management features of Java without all the low-level pointers stuff of C. It's not as fast as pure C++, but I think our problem is with coding having been complex and time consuming, not squeezing extra 3D performance out of the hardware.

The problem is with publishing.  Your audience needs something like XP, Service Pack 2, .NET 3.0, the god-damn SDK itself, and a couple other things installed in order to run your game.  THEN you have to figure out how to distribute the thing, which is... not so well documented.

Obviously alleviated with the advent of 360 XNA Community Downloads, but then YOU need a 360 to develop on.  Either way, I'm kinda fucked.

Stackoverflow is pretty damn cool for asking questions, even newbie questions.

AND IT HAS ACHEIVEMENTS.  You can grind real life tech problems for imaginary awards!

I've been doing this on IRC for years. If I'd known I could earn imaginary awards...

Need to pick up a new skill to round out that resume?  Teach yourself some ASP.NET.  Videos for just getting started, some advanced topics stuff, and migrating from other kinds of web languages at the far bottom.

The Manga Guide to Databases is up for preorder.  I've got my ticket in for one.
