I actually understand that in part because it has a much much weaker electro-magnetic field, and in part because it is smaller than earth, Mars can't support a thick enough atmosphere for terraforming.

Okay, somebody's doing that on purpose.

apparently the news site filters every instance of the word 'gay' to 'homosexual'. hence, rudy homosexual.

Homosexual and Dix looking at each other and slapping palms, glad their bodies could do it, however, is basically the funniest thing ever.

Shinra.  4 posts behind the conversation since 2004.

Come on, Thad.  Making fun of Shinra is a bit trite at this point.  Don't be cliche.  Just look at all the wonderful contributions Shinra makes to post, and think of all the people who wouldn't have someone to make snappy comebacks at without him.

T-cells can be genetically modified to resist entry by HIV.

For HIV positives, you'd modify a few of their T-cells, put them back, and they'd thrive while the others succumb to HIV. With a good anti-AIDS cocktail, I'm betting this could actually get a few cures.

I was floating for hours after I read that one.  Very cool stuff.  And I could be misremembering my Gibson, but isn't that eerily similar to the AIDS vaccine in Virtual Light?

Well, the basic concept is pretty obvious -- it's something that occurred to me when I first heard how AIDS functioned at age 12 -- it's the "making it actually WORK" part that's taken this long.

I, and pretty much every other little kid, thought that you could make floating cars just by making the roads and the bottoms of cars out of positive magnets.  Of course, I now know that that would do nothing but kill a lot of people in horrible ways.

Which, granted, is something cars already do, but they also get us from place to place sometimes.

I never thought that would work even as a kid.  Ever try getting a magnetic object to just sit there hovering without shooting off in a random direction?  Hard to do without anchoring it in some way.  Also, I was informed of maglev trains within 5 minutes of the thought.

Which is, basically, what maglev is.  Yes, SCIENCE! has refined the hell out of your basic, uninformed childhood conceptualization, but...well, that's pretty much exactly what the hell I just said, isn't it.
