I'm not sure if anyone else is getting this, but Firefox 3 seems to have brought back the glory of memory leaks.

Mockup of Aurora browser concept

Busy busy busy, way too pretty, and I would probably hate to use it...but damn it looks cool.

Weird. I just started replaying Metroid Prime 3, so seeing "Aurora" make me think of:

Damn I hate the look of that "spacial view", I like some fucking organization.  How about some damn utilitarian structure.  I find that if a system starts overly mechanical then is tweaked to be more organically user-friendly things turn out great, see anything by google.  Also, that shit would take a fuckton of RAM wouldn't it?

It WAS organized.  It was METICULOUSLY fucking organized.  It wasn't organized the way I'm used to seeing things organized, or the way I LIKE seeing things organized, but saying it wasn't organized is, well, wrong.

Also, that shit would take a fuckton of RAM wouldn't it?

...You DO realize they're not planning on releasing it tomorrow, right?

Was Ms. ChoppyPants using a three-dimensional mouse?

Or did she just slice the arm off Wall-E?

Welp, it finally happened.  I cannot use Opera at this level of brokenness under Vista.  Not Opera's fault (still works fantastically on operating systems that aren't fundamentally broken to begin with) but there's only so many times it can crash and never terminate ever, or somehow block up your entire web port, or kick out your entire wireless connection, or fail to make any sort of encrypted connection, or the dozens of other problems it never had before and that Firefox doesn't have now.  Oh well.

This browser is pretty ugly.

File->Exit often results in Firefox closing all visible windows, then sitting around consuming a constant amount of RAM (tends to be in the ballpark of 150MB) and wasting 50% of my CPU, forcing me to manually kill the process.

EDIT: This is in Windows XP.

Yes, but you can manually kill the process.  Besides that and actually looking like it closed down, Opera does the same thing.

One part of making Vista work properly with anything is downloading every single patch they have available.  XP users generally sneer at how Vista needs these patches to work, completely oblivious to how many patches XP needed to become usable.

Yeah, did that already.

Might be what broke it, actually.

I suspect that TOO MUCH RAM is still an issue, too.  I really ought to just yank out one of those ?IMMs and be done with it.

Okay, I guess it's just that I suck after all. I got FireFox 3.0.1 installed on my puppy linux OS, and it's working perfectly. I know FireFox 2.0.0.7 was using more system resources than the Sea Monkey install I have, so I hope they fixed that with 3, as Sea Monkey was an absolute beast on my XP OS.

Tech News World: Internet Explorer 8's Privacy Controls Worry Advertisers.

Hard to say without actually having it in front of me, but it sounds like IE8's going to have an integrated and pretty easy-to-use set of privacy controls.  It'll be interesting to see if they work out.

My prediction is they'll be buried somewhere on the Options menu and most users won't use them.

On one hand, I like privacy.  On the other, I'm very worried about the repercussions of ad-based monetization becoming less viable, as it brings us a lot of "free" services.

Not that it stops me from using NoScript, AdblockPlus, and PeerGuardian2 (blocks ads and malware).  If everyone figures out how to use them (in the form of something default/idiot-friendly built in by MS or Apple) I might be out a free ride.

3.1 alpha 2's out, as described by CNet and a more-detailed (but harder to follow, IMO) article at Computer World.  The upshot is that HTML 5 supports new, built-in video support to hypothetically decrease reliance on Flash, and Mozilla is doing what Chrome's gotten so many accolades for and making the browser GUI function independently of whether JS is eating resources.  There's also supposed to be a new JS interpreter in 3.1 final, which Mozilla claims is even faster than Chrome's, but it hasn't been included in the alphas.

I haven't had any problems either and I got Vista pretty much on release day, but I also had a brand new computer to go along with it, so that pretty much takes care of 90% of Vista problems.
