A CT annoyance I'd almost forgotten about: the dyslexic battle cursor.  You know, how when you're selecting an enemy frequently pushing Left will move the cursor right and pushing Down will move it up.  That sure seems like something they could have fixed in the rerelease.

...so now I guess I'll be getting a flurry of responses about how it's totally awesome for the Left button to move the cursor right, because of course Chrono Trigger is infallible and above any kind of criticism.

Fuck you, Thad, the cursor is perfect.  Changing it would have meant completely changing the control scheme of the original game.  It'd be like changing the fireball motion to a dragon punch.

Do you dragon punch to throw a fireball, Thad?

If you have the game in DS mode, you will see that the reason for that is that you are selecting enemies from a 2x3 menu, not actually cursoring over to them. It's annoying and unintuitive but at least after noticing that i realized i should just look at the bottom screen to target things.

Saying that's "the reason for that" is a bit of a copout given that the game had the same problem 13 years ago, but I suppose that's justification for not fixing it.

(Current party names are Harpo, Velma, Jasmin [sic], and Kermit.  I think I will go with "Astley" for Robo because I am an unoriginal moron, and "Hulk" for Ayla because "Me, Grimlock" won't fit.  I've got a long way to go before Magus but think I'll go with a simple emotion adjective, like "Angry" or "Mopey".)

I don't remember it being quite as annoying, but i haven't played the original in a really long time.

Also they might have had a similar but invisible menu before.

The menu's always been there, it's just that

GOBLIN
GOBLIN
GOBLIN

Doesn't give you that much information.

They preserved the six-character limit for no apparent reason.

Well, I mean, of course they did.  Any kind of state transition can be displayed graphically.  And since the buttons DID cycle through options left-right and up-down, then by its nature the graph is going to be a two-dimensional grid.

The fact that the grid is invisible and has fuck-all to do with the visual information the player IS given is the problem.  And making the grid visible on the bottom screen but going to no effort to make it correspond with the action on the top screen is not really a big improvement.
